Integrated System Diagnosis and Root Cause AnalysisMorning Session - 8:30amOther - IT Service ManagementPrimroseKenny Wong, University of Alberta; Kostas Kontogiannis, National Technical University ofAthens ; Hausi Muller, University of Victoria; John Mylopoulos, University of Toronto
To support ever-growing numbers of business initiatives and users, companies form diverse software systems into mission-criticalenterprise applications whose scale and complexity has caused unprecedented problem determination challenges. In analyzingthe root cause of failures in such distributed, service-oriented systems, it is necessary to have an integrated environment andworkflow that assists humans in understanding the failures from multiple perspectives. In this workshop, we will exploreapproaches to root cause analysis and diagnosis. We will be looking for event-driven, service-oriented reference architectures toprovide effective computer assistance for the problem determination process.

Service Integration is the core to enable any BPM and SOA based applications, and is the mechanism we use to enable newServices from existing applications, or create new Services by composing existing Services. On the other hand, to create a reliableand enterprise-level service integration solution will require a level of understanding and skills that will take years of experience toacquire. By applying proven integration patterns in your service integration design, our hope is that it will significantly reduce thecomplexity and skill requirements for users to come up with a reliable solution. This workshop will explore the current state-of-the-art in our existing products to support pattern-based integration, examples of where we apply this approach in customers, as wellas current researches in this area.
Modeling and implementing a business process using WebSphere Lombardi Edition 7.1Morning Session - 8:30amDynamic Business Process Management and Smart SOAHollyShili Yang, IBM Toronto Lab; Ying Sun, IBM Canada; Julie Waterhouse, IBM Canada; DianaLau, IBM; Tammam Al-Hamwy, IBM
Lombardi's department-level approach to delivering process management complements IBM's existing strengths in enterprise-wide process management software and adds a new and compelling dimension for customers looking for an end-to-end,integrated solution that automates human tasks and workflows. The Lombardi acquisition reinforces IBM's commitment andinvestments in SOA and BPM. This workshop will provide an introduction to the recently released WebSphere Lombardi Edition(WLE) 7.1, the IBM offering previously known as Lombardi Teamworks. It will include an overview presentation on WLE thatcovers design principles, architecture and key features of the product. This will be followed by a hands-on exercise whereparticipants will follow step-by-step instructions to model, implement and test a credit approval process.
Mobile Computing Research and Education: Bridging the Gap Between Academia andIndustryMorning Session - 8:30amSmart InteractionsEvergreenMark Green, University of Ontario Institute of Techn
Computing is becoming increasingly mobile with the new developments in Smartphones, slate based computers and high speedwireless networks. People are expecting to perform many of the same tasks that they perform on desktop computers on thesenew mobile platforms. The opening of application stores for many of these devices has made it possible for independentcompanies to development applications for these platforms opening up a new industry segment. This is an opportunity for Canadaif we can provide the talent needed for this new industry and take advantage of our local research capacity. This workshop willbring together participants from academia and industry to set an agenda for training and research in this area. It will provide anopportunity for the two communities to exchange information and lay the foundation for future cooperation.
Virtual Worlds for Modeling Complex Processes Between People and SystemsMorning Session - 8:30amNext Generation SystemsMarkham BEleni Stroulia, University of Alberta; Paul Pacholski, IBM; Kelly Lyons, University of Toronto
We are recently recognizing the potential of virtual-world (VW) environments for serious games, designed to immerse and trainlearners in realistic task environments. These environments offer new platforms for serious games with a compelling set offeatures: rich user interfaces, a variety of communication modes, and, most importantly, the potential for integration with otherweb-accessible resources and systems. The workshop will bring together the community of people who are interested in exploringthe potential of VW platforms for modeling complex socio-technical activities for the purpose of systematizing and improving themas well as for training people in performing them.

Cache-oblivious Algorithms, a key to better performanceMorning Session - 8:30amNext Generation SystemsMarkham AYang Yang, IBM
As CPUs cores are more abundant than ever before, memory access is the bottle-neck for performance. CPUs today are muchmore sophisticated than they were 20+ years ago. In those days the frequency of the CPU is equivalanet to that of the memorybus. This trend was changed during the 90s as hardware designers was able to increase the CPU frequency at a rapid rate.Meanwhile the the frequency rate of the memory bus stayed the same for architectural reasons. Hardware designer have came upwith data access acceleration techniques, one of them is the CPU cache. We will walkthrough why CPU cache are important forsoftware developers and various cache algorithms designed to exploit the CPU cache without having the size of the cache as anexplicit parameter.

Workshop on Automatic Service CompositionAfternoon Session - 2pmDynamic Business Process Management and Smart SOAPrimroseHua (Michael) Xiao, Queen's University; Ying Zou, Queen's University; Alex Lau, IBMCanada; Joanna Ng, IBM
Web services are considered as self-contained, self-describing, modular applications that can be published, located, and invokedacross the Web. A single service generally cannot fulfill the desired functionality. To create more complex applications, servicecomposition assembles existing Web services together to fulfill business requirements, and exposes the composite Web service.Service composition is one of the key techniques in Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Service composition can increase thereuse and cooperation among services. Therefore, applications can be built in a rapid way with relatively low cost. In thisworkshop, we will identify the major challenges in service composition and discuss the recent development in the industrialpractices and the research results.
