users

Provides a consistent, simplified, and rich interface for self-service reporting and analysis

Cognos Workspace Advanced Addresses Key ChallengesWhat we heard from customersExisting Cognos 8 Customers

Improve ease-of-use and consistency – Too many inconsistent and overlapping interfaces to do not exactly meet the broad and varied needs of the business user. For example:

Query Studio is easy-to-use, but too simple and not powerful enough for some

Analysis Studio is too complex for the average business user

Report Studio Express doesn’t provide the ability to create/explore data beyond a crosstab

Report Studio Pro is far too complex for business users

Reduce “studio hopping” – Reliance on multiple studios to answer different questions and get desired information

Limited flexibility – Limited options for queries/objects and layout/formatting on a report

New Customers

Deliver self-service authoring to the business to expedite turnaround times and improve user satisfaction

Reduce number of one-off report requests to improve IT turnaround times

Preserve IT governance to reduce reliance on Excel or other rogue business applications

Business Drivers for Cognos Workspace AdvancedBusiness Analysts and Specialists are looking to…

Quickly and easily create new ad-hoc queries

Easy and intuitive drag-and-drop interface for ad-hoc queries

Perform additional analysis and data exploration

Analyze data (calculations, drill, filter, pivot, top/bottom count, etc.) from same interface

More flexibility for format, layout, and distribution

Leverage multiple queries and objects, more flexibility with charts and lists/crosstabs, improved formatting and layouts

Integration with Report Studio Professional

Leverage other resources, like report writers, to augment and enhance ad-hoc reports and analysis

Self-Service Ad-Hoc Queries

Integrated Data Exploration & Analysis

Multiple Objects/ Queries and Improved Format/Layout

Cognos Workspace Addresses Key ChallengesWhat we heard from customers

Existing Customers

Limited interactivity within the Report Viewer (e.g. no sorting, filtering, display changes, annotation, etc.)

Disconnected “Studio hopping” required for true interactivity (e.g. Report Viewer to Query Studio / Analysis Studio to Report Studio)

Large amount of time, effort, and unsupported techniques to hard-code in simple interactions (e.g. change display type, sorting, etc.)

New Customers

Limited ability to interact and manipulate the data and view and desire a more “google” like experience

Reliance on Excel or other tools to combine information together as existing tools are too difficult to use

Reliance on IT to create many one-off reports

IBM Cognos Active Reports

© 2010 IBM Corporation

What are they?

IBM Cognos Active Reports are interactive, intuitive, stand-alone reports with the ability to be highly-formatted.

An Active Reports profile in Report Studio allows developers to create these sophisticated report applications.

Interactive Behavior Left side - Does this control set a variable value?

Right side - Does this control react to a variable being set? (usually by another control)

To see both sides of a connection select the controls from the drop down list

Variables set by this control

This control’s reaction to variables being set

Active Controls and VariablesReports operate through Active Controls and Active Report Variables

Can show just those controls from context (right-click) menu in the toolbox

Active variables link controls and allows them to interact with each other

• Highlight rows in a list

• Select a button on a button bar

• Select a card from a deck to be made visible

• Filter rows or columns from a crosstab

• Filter rows from a list

• Filter list items from a list box

• Disabled a list box

• Disable a button

Pre-Rendered Charts

All charts are pre-rendered (in PNG) at beginning of execution

No client-side charting engine in the C10 release but is being considered for a future release

Instead of filtering, we just flip to another pre-rendered chart (potentially large number of charts)

Special controls for this (e.g. Data Deck)

The author controls what the user can do and see so test the published report – limit size and complexity.

Drop chart here

Data Deck Control

Basic Concept of how an .mht populates the UI List or Crosstab – html tables can

be populatedCharts – because there is no client-side

graphics engine, charts are not data-driven but instead are pre-generated and included as part of the .mht file.

Dynamic Cubes to answer Business Problems

Some customer data sources are not well served by current BI technology – in particular, very large data warehouses (terabytes of detail data)

These customers have already built warehouse, usually with aggregate / summary tables to increase performance but they still struggle

Large pharmaceutical manufacturer – analyzing all prescriptions filled in the United States

Bank analyzing transaction patterns by customers, households, etc. for a ‘holistic view of all customers and all their relationships

Dynamic Cubes to answer Performance Problems

Current solutions all have limitations, they all sacrifice either detail or performance. And they usually can’t see current transactions

Currently available solution all have their limitations:

IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes are designed to address this specific area

PowerCubes 32 bits, Stand alone cubes

Requires massive aggregation for large transaction volume.

Need time to build and automation process to refresh.

DMR (OLAP over Relational) Can handle any size

But even with DQM, performance can be less than ideal with massive data volumes.

No In-Memory pre-Aggregation.

What exactly is a Dynamic Cubes ?

Dynamic Cubes are in-memory OLAP cubes that load data directly from relational data warehouses.

They introduce a performance layer in the Cognos query stack to allow low-latency, high-performance OLA-style analytics over large relational data warehouse.

Built into Dynamic Query Mode query service.

How do we build and deploy Dynamic Cubes ?

Cube designer Interface

What exactly is a Dynamic Cubes ?

Dynamic Cubes Life-cycle

Aggregated Cubes

Dynamic Cubes : Aggregates with DQA + logs workflow or not

In Memory aggregates:

Similar to pre-running reports to load detail into caches before users begin

They are set by aggregate advisor, no modeling required and can be based on Workload Logs

When saved, aggregates are automatically loaded for the next time the cube is started

Database aggregates:

Database aggregates are summary tables or view created by the DBA

These can be simple summary tables, or special tables/views supported by database vendor

These tables can be modeled in cube designer so that dynamic cube queries can be directed to them instead of lower detail tables

• Aggregates cubes are modeled inside Base cube
