In-depth interviews revealed IT administrators’management challenges

Monitor and Repair system status

– Detect system errors– Repair problems that cause interruptions in services – Prove that a service interruption was not caused by the server– Collaborate with IT organization to determine the source of

service interruptions, Deploy and Optimize workloads

– Ensure that system architecture allows sharing of capacity across business units

– Minimize the likelihood that unplanned outages occur– Apply regular maintenance fixes to systems

Plan and Document the infrastructure – Plan for future system capacity needs– Keep an inventory of current IT assets in place across the

enterprise IT infrastructure– Seek out cost reduction opportunities across the company's IT

infrastructure

IBM Power Systems

IBM® Systems Director ‘tiered’ agent supportCommon Agent

– Provides a single agent management system for status reporting and operations

• Common authentication and credential management using a single agent manager

• Single, shared incoming port (firewall friendly) for management • Increased availability using a watchdog to restart common agent, if

needed – Single agent runtime shared by IBM systems and Tivoli products

like Tivoli Provisioning Manager reduces agent footprint, supports shared credentials and drives discovery, inventory and other common services

– Replaces the previous 5.x Level 2 Agent while providing Seamless integration of Platform Agent

Platform Agent– Provides a subset of Common Agent functions used to

communicate with and administer the managed system, including hardware alerts and status information

– Improved interoperability through open standards, rather than through proprietary technologies

– Firmware and driver updates and remote deployment

Agent-less Management– Agent-less managed systems are best for environments that

require very small footprints and are used for specific tasks, such as one-time inventory collection, firmware and driver updates and remote deployment.

But what can Systems Director do for i?Director emphasizes heterogeneous environment.

– Support for multiple OS and virtualization technologies

Does not need to be used with multiple OSes to provide value.

Director and IBM i can be used, without installing any Director software on IBM i.

– Some functions will require Director agent software, but can start using without changing IBM i and let the business decisions guide the ‘right’ choice.

Director can be used for HMC tasks, including HMC updates

Director supports IBM i as 3 types of agents.– Agentless (STRTCPSVR *SSHD)

– Platform Agent (STRTCPSVR *SSHD, *SLP, *CIMOM)

– Director Agent • Common Agent (STRTCPSVR SERVER(*HTTP) HTTPSVR(CAS) and Platform agent

started)• 5.20.2 Agent (STRTCPSVR *DIRECTOR, *CIMOM)

IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager (AEM)

AEM helps companies monitor, measure and control their energy usage

AEM is a unique energy management solution building block that returns true control of energy costs to the customer

AEM is a cornerstone of the IBM energy management framework

AEM is an energy management software tool that can provide clients with a single view of the actual power usage across multiple platforms in their infrastructure as opposed to benchmarked power consumption

Support across a large spectrum of IBM and non-IBM systems

AEM energy conservation measures can be implemented without impacting response time or continuity

Monitoring energy in a data center lets you begin to manage it

IBM Systems Director Network Control v1.2What is It?

Expands on base Network Management, adds advanced featuresGraphical view of Layer 2 network connectivity using Director’s topology perspectives

– Uses Tivoli based technology for network topology discovery

– Network monitoring at a glance with ability to see the components affected by network outages. Now includes virtual switches.

Integration with IBM Data Center Fabric Manager (DCFM)– Device based launch in context point, uses Tivoli Enterprise

Single Sign-on– Integrated CEE configuration function for supported

Brocade switchesLogical views of network systems arranged by the sub-networks and VLANs to which they belong

– Subnets group– New VLANs group– Updated Systems By VLAN and Subnet view

Virtual adapter and virtual switch discovery and inventoryNew “License” section ” will display current product license status.

IBM Systems DirectorStandard and Enterprise Editions

Includes a Network Control limited-use license that covers the IBM Systems Director server

Additional per Switch licenses must be obtained to manage switches and use the Network Control features listed above and described in this presentation

A system pool logically groups like hosts with the goal of better resource usage and workload resilience. A system pool can contain multiple hosts and their associated virtual servers. A system pool facilitates the relocation of virtual servers from one host to other hosts in the system pool. By relocating hosts within a system pool, you can maintain the high availability and resilience of your workloads.

The Components: IBM Tivoli Monitoring

IBM Tivoli Monitoring is a monitoring and data storage tool used to improve detection, recognition, and response to incidents affecting the IT infrastructure

With ITM you can

– Monitor cross-enterprise resources (Distributed and z/OS)

– Establish your own or have ITM suggest performance thresholds and raise alerts when thresholds are exceeded or values are matched

– Create situations (conditions to test when monitoring) and automated responses they can have time variant thresholds that are custom for each resource/agent.

– Trace the causes leading up to an alert

– Create and send commands to systems in your managed enterprise by means of the Take Action feature

– Create comprehensive reports about system conditions

– Define your own queries, using the attributes provided by Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Agent, to monitor conditions of particular interest to you, evaluated locally

– Leverage the ITM infrastructure as a component of other availability and performance solutions.

Monitor All Your Resources From One Consistent Interface

Customer can understand what they have through agent-less discovery of

interdependencies between applications, middleware, servers and network components and automated

application maps

TADDM discovers and stores deep configuration information. This helps

customers understand what has changed in their environment or what

impact a change could have minimizing the risk a change could have on IT and business services.

Customers can also use TADDM to compare configurations to a

“reference master” to reveal policy violations, and audit the impact of

changes to your business processes to ensure they have the expected

results.
