SPECIFICATIONSGeneral-purpose Enclosure
Meets NEMA standards for Type 1 gener-al-purpose enclosure and Type 3 weather-resistant (waterproof). The general-purposeenclosure is intended for industrial applica-tions indoors as well as for general use out-doors.Watertight Enclosure
Meets NEMA standards for Type 4 water-tight enclosure as well as Type 12 dust-tight.The watertight enclosure is suitable for usein wet locations as well as in dusty areas ofsteel and cement mills.Bronze Enclosure
Use bronze enclosure on ship docks andother shoreside areas for extra corrosionresistance. Order bronze levers.Nonoverlapping Circuits
With nonoverlapping circuits, one circuitis opened before another is closed. (SeeFig. 12.)Overlapping Circuits
With overlapping circuits, one circuit isopened after another is closed. (See Fig. 12.)Maintained-contact Switches
Switch remains in one position until it ismoved to opposite position by the operatingdog. Forked levers required.Spring-return
Switch returns to midposition after trip-ping dog has pressed over lever.
When used with spring-return, only oneof the four circuits (maximum) can be anormally open snap-action contact.Contacts Actuated Both Directions
Circuit or circuits will have a change instate when switch is activated in either direc-tion.Standard Universal Contact Blocks
This contact block is the basic construc-tion unit for IC limit switches as well asIC3012 master switches. (See Page 2-2 fordetails.)Snap-action Contact Blocks
Snap-action contact blocks provide quick-make quick-break contacts for slow-movingapplications of 180-fpm maximum. Withquick-make quick-break contacts, burningof contact tips resulting from slow move-ment is eliminated.Contacts Actuated in One Direction
Circuit or circuits will have a change instate when switch is activated in one direc-tion, but not when activated in the otherdirection from midpoint.Normally Open vs Normally Closed Circuits
Contacts can be set in the field for eithernormally open or normally closed arrange-ment.Mixture of Contact Actuations
Contacts arranged so that some are actu-
ated in both directions and others are actu-ated in one direction.Slack-cable Applications
A single-pole limit switch used in the con-trol circuit to shut down the drive when abreak or slack cable condition results on acrane, hoist, or any application where a ca-ble is wound on a drum (switch can be setfor automatic or manual reset). An operat-ing mechanism, provided by hoist builder, operates the switch lever. Order switch andlever together as follows:
Crane-hook Applications
A two-pole limit switch used in the controlcircuit for limiting upward travel of cranehook. Switch contact is held closed by coun-terweight suspended along hoist cable. Con-tacts open when counterweight is lifted byupward travel of crane hook block. Orderswitch and actuating equipment together asfollows:

Note 1
Cams on limit switches rated 60- and 150-rpm and below can beset to hold contacts open for any number of degrees between theminimum and maximum shown.
Cams on limit switches rated 600-rpm are fixed 180-degree cams. Whereit is desired to adjust duration of contact opening and closing, connect twocircuits in series for opening greater than 180 degrees and in parallel foropening less than 180 degrees (See below).
The vernier adjustment provides fine adjustment of the point ofcontact opening or closing. If independent vernier adjustment ofboth opening and closing is desired, connect two sets of contacts inparallel or series as shown below. One vernier can then be used toadjust the opening and the other the closing of the circuit.
Note 2
Dc inductive rating of IC9446 limit switches with standard con-tact blocks varies with speed as shown below. Rating of 60-rpmswitches with snap-action contact blocks is independent of speed.See tables top of next column.

WHERE TO USEUse on cranes, electric shovels, steel-mill
drives and other machinery under constantsupervision of an operator. Master switchescontrol contactors and other power-switch-ing devices to start, stop, and change speedof motors.
IC3012N master switches are unit-type de-vices intended for use on desk or console. They are adjustable to a maximum of sevenpositions in each direction. Adjustment onpawl permits the operator to choose thekind of position feel desired.
SEVERE-DUTY APPLICATIONS
All IC3012N master switches includesealed ball bearings throughout. Thesesealed bearings protect heavy wear pointsagainst dirt and dust, and provide longerlife, smoother operation, and less mainte-nance. This standard feature is particularlyadvantageous in severe-duty applicationssuch as electric power shovels and draglines.

WHERE TO USE
Use on cranes, electric shovels, steel millsand other variable speed drives.
The selection of the stepless elementshould be based on the required power ofthe reference signal.
The compactness of the switch and itsdesk-mounting feature not only save valu-able cab space, but provide for better visi-bility and efficiency of the operator. This isparticularly desirable where the operatorhas numerous motions to control. This mas-ter switch can be mounted on a desk orconsole or it can be furnished with NEMA 1,pedestal-type, free-standing enclosure.
SEVERE-DUTY APPLICATIONS
All IC3012N master switches includesealed ball bearings throughout. Thesesealed ball bearings protect heavy wearpoints against dirt and dust, and providelonger life, smoother operation, and lessmaintenance. This standard feature is par-ticularly advantageous in severe-duty appli-cations such as electric power shovels anddraglines.
RHEOSTAT TYPE
For use in circuits requiring stepless ele-ments with output capacity of 100 watts. This switch is available with maximum of 8independent circuits and maximum of tworheostat elements mounted on the bottom.
Each four-inch rheostat element is rated100 watts maximum with standard ohmicvalues as shown in Fig. 67 page 2-25.
STANDARD POTENTIOMETER
TYPE
For use in circuits requiring a steplesselement with output capacity of 2 watts. Thisswitch is available with maximum of 4 inde-pendent circuits. Standard offering includesone 2-watt potentiometer mounted on bot-tom of switch with standard ohmic values asshown in Fig. 67 page 2-25 and elementarrangement per Fig. 71A&B page 2-26.Center tap is standard.
SEVERE SHOCK AND VIBRATION
POTENTIOMETER TYPE
This switch is available with maximum of8 independent circuits and includes one2.5-watt 2500-ohm potentiometer arrangedper Fig. 71A page 2-26.
INDUCTION TYPE
The IC3012 stepless induction masterswitch consists of the popular IC3012Ndesk-mounted master switch with a diffen-tial transformer mounted on the end of theshaft. The differential transformer consistsof a stator with three coils and a uniquelyshaped rotor. As the handle position ischanged, the rotor changes the amount ofcoupling between the three coils of the sta-tor and produces an output. Fig. 61 illus-trates this output voltage and clearly showsthat very fine control may be obtained atcreeping speeds. In the low-speed rangewhere fineness of control is desired, a largechange in handle position provides a smallchange in output. At high speeds where a
fast response is required, a small change inhandle position provides a large change inoutput.
The neutral, or OFF position, is notchedto provide positive position ‘‘feel.’’ All otherpoints are un-notched to provide the oper-ator with a truly smooth, stepless ‘‘feel.’’The switch produces no torque to opposemovement of the handle, minimizing oper-ator fatigue. Contacts are used for direc-tional purposes to select the reversing con-tactors.
The primary coil has a maximum ratingof 125 volts. Any change in the input voltagewill directly affect the output characteristics.
The output curve shown is based on aload resistance of 1000 ohms. With thisload, the effective power output is 0.25watts.

WHERE TO USE
Use on operator’s stations, control panelsor operator’s desk on rolling mills, wherefrequent operation, rough handling, vibra-tion or shock are encountered.
The IC3012M master switch is a two-partswitch mounted with the switching mecha-nism behind the panel or desk top and theoperating handle and escutcheon on thefront.
Other forms of IC3012M switches areavailable. Refer to company.
Joy-stick-operated—IC3012P
WHERE TO USE
Shovel operators can control two motionswith one hand.
Stepless operation of both motions pro-vides for greater spotting accuracy andfaster movement of loads. The handle of thejoy stick can be moved into any quadrantand any position within that quadrant. Bycontrolling both motions simultaneously, the operator is free to devote more atten-tion to controlling the hoist motion with hisother hand.
Other forms of joy stick switches are avail-able. Refer to company with description.
