On the first Sunday of Advent, some of the words of the Mass will be changing. In order to better understand these changes, please consider attending one of the following seminars:

IN CHURCH

Saturday, Sept. 3 from 9am - 10:30am

Monday, Sept. 19 from 7pm - 8:30pm

Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9am - 10:30am

Also, please visit our website: www.icctampa.org to see our informative page dedicated to the new English translation of the Roman Missal.

A MESSAGE OF LOVE In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we under-stand that fraternal correction is always undertaken with Je-sus present to us. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he “does not speak out” to dis-suade a person from evil, then he, too, will be held responsi-ble. We live in a “do your own thing” age when moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As St. Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Col 1:24 — 2:3; Lk 6:6-11 Tuesday: Col 2:6-15; Lk 6:12-19 Wednesday: Col 3:1-11; Lk 6:20-26 Thursday: Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30; Mt 1:1-16, 18-23 [18-23] Friday: 1 Tm 1:1-2, 12-14; Lk 6:39-42 Saturday: 1 Tm 1:15-17; Lk 6:43-49 Sunday: Sir 27:30 — 28:9; Ps 103; Rom 14:7-9; Mt 18:21-35

SURRENDER The Mass is not simply a human creation. Although it cer-tainly relies on human words and actions and meaning, the Mass has been given to us by the Lord. If the Mass is to be a means for us to encounter the divine presence, then we must do so on God’s terms, not ours. Thus, entering into the Mass requires a certain openness from us. It requires letting go of our preferences and de-sires. Often we must surrender our own expectations in order to fulfill God’s expectations of us. Surrender is never easy. It may be especially difficult in our society, which tends to see surrender as an act of weakness. In fact, it re-quires great strength of spirit and it may be the hardest thing each of us must do. Surrender to God is the basic requirement of the spiritual life. Perhaps as we see the priest raise his hands in prayer, it can be a signal to all of us that prayer is always and basical-ly a surrender to the will of God. 3 de septiembre ♦ San Gregorio Magno Es un de los más grandes doctores de la Iglesia universal.
