FINDING GOD The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew's Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi's home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Monday of this week is Christmas Day in Russia and in much of the Orthodox world. This curious difference in schedule has a lot to do with how calendars have been developed and changed over the years. In the year 45 B.C. Julius Ceasar gave the
empire his Julian Calendar, with the winter solstice on January 6. This put an end to a system in which officials called "pontiffs" were able to tweak the calendar by adding extra days in as needed. He invented two new months at that time, December and January; and in order to correct the mess the pontiffs had made, forced a year of 445 days on the empire in what he named "The Last Year of Confusion." The new months varied in number of days according to a complex schedule, but the calendar was still off by nearly twelve minutes a year, and lost a full day every 130 years. Pope Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1583, but not everyone appreciated his efforts. England held out for two hundred years. The year 1700 was a leap year in England, but not in France; they were eleven days apart! George Washington was really born on February 11; when the Gregori-an calendar was finally adopted in the English colonies shortly before the Revolution, he had to move his birthday to February 22. Good Health Practices for Mass
With the onset of the cold and flu season the Office of Worship offers the following reminders on good health practices regard-ing the celebration of Mass.
What is the Flu? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Every year in the United States, on average: 5-20% of the population gets the flu and more than 200,000 are hospitalized from flu complications.” (See the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu for more information.) Preventing the Flu – Take Everyday Preventative Actions Common sense is most important for the prevention of a cold or the flu. The following health precautions are strongly rec-ommended to limit your risk of infection. • Get vaccinated. The CDC recommends the flu vaccination, especially for those who are at high risk: young children, preg-nant women, people with chronic health conditions & the el-derly. • Stay home when sick. There is no sin if you miss Mass because you are sick or taking care of someone who is sick. • Cover your mouth and nose. When you cough or sneeze, use a tissue and throw the tissue in the trash after you use it (or use your sleeve if a tissue is not available).
• Wash your hands often. Clean your hands regu-larly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. • Stay home an additional 24 hours. If you are sick with flu-like symptoms, the CDC recommends that you stay home for an additional 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of a fever-reducing medication. • Limit contact with others while sick. If you are feeling sick or you are at risk for infection you should refrain from the Communion cup and perhaps shaking people’s hands at the sign of peace. (If someone chooses to refrain from the hand-shake, be gracious and considerate.) While the flu vaccine is still one of the best preventative measures, reliable information, good health habits, getting plenty of rest, nutritious eating, exercise, and managing stress will go a long way toward reducing the risk of infection during the cold and flu season. La fiesta de Reyes, nos recuerda sobre todo la vocación universal y misionera de nuestra fe. Los magos, que habían abandonado todo, encuentran todo cuanto buscaban en el niño en brazos de María. Se postran en su presencia y le abren su corazón y sus tesoros. Guiados por una estrella, han recorrido el camino de la fe, que es apertura y no terquedad, es generosidad y no egoísmo, es encuentro y no aislamiento: es en definitiva, amor.
Ser creyentes quiere decir ser incansables buscadores de Dios, no poseedores de Dios. El creyente es alguien que considera que nunca ha llegado. Para el creyente Dios no es una posesión, no es un objeto de bolsillo, sino alguien que jamás es encontrada de una vez para siempre, de quien se tiene sed siempre. Cada uno de nosotros está llamado a ser, esencialmente, uno que busca, un buscador. Quien después de haber encontrado, sigue buscando por todas partes. Es necesario librarse de la ilusión de tener a Dios, de poseerlo de una vez para siempre. Cada cristiano debe aparecer como alguien que se une a sus hermanos en la fe humildemente para que, juntos permanezcan en la búsqueda de Dios.
Para encontrar a Dios, como los magos, tenemos que dejarnos conducir por la estrella, salir de nosotros mismos -de todo lo mío y lo nuestro-, para ir al encuentro de todos los otros. Si nos decidiéramos a amar al prójimo como a nosotros mismos, no nos resultaría tan difícil creer en Dios. Pero, mientras tengamos vueltos los ojos y el corazón hacia nosotros mismos, ni podremos ver al prójimo ni podremos descubrir a Dios en un niño en brazos de María.
Los Reyes Magos son ejemplo de búsqueda ilusionada. El camino de cada hombre hacia Dios implica un saber salir de uno mismo para buscar. Es necesario que salgamos de nuestra vida instalada, fácil, ya hecha, sin compromiso con nada ni con nadie, para buscar a Dios presente en cada hombre y en cada acontecimiento.
Todos necesitamos emprender un camino oscuro, inseguro, que pueda llevarnos a descubrir esa inmensa alegría que llenó a los Reyes Magos al ver la estrella. La alegría es la consecuencia de descubrir el sentido verdadero y siempre nuevo de la vida; es un regalo de Dios a los hombres, porque Jesús vino al mundo para que alcanzáramos la auténtica y total felicidad; es fruto del hallazgo, del anhelo cumplido. P. Jairo ¿Pertenecemos a los buscadores de Dios? Porque Dios, para revelarse en la luz que debe guiar nuestra vida y conducirnos a la salvación, debe ser buscado. El gran engaño del espíritu moderno es precisamente éste; el hombre ya no busca a Dios y cree que ha muerto la ciencia y la fe que hacen resplandecer, en el temor y en el amor, a Dios sobre el camino de nuestra vida; esto tiene consecuencias prácticas muy graves en todos los campos de la actividad humana. Sin embargo, la búsqueda de Dios en Cristo es la brújula de la vida, y es una búsqueda que debe realizarse en todos los senderos de la experiencia humana... Cristo está en la encrucijada de todos los caminos para quien sabe buscarlo y hallarlo. En él se encuentra a Dios y se conquista la verdadera vida. (Pablo VI)

El Comité para la Noche de Casino 2013 esta buscando patrocinadores. Los feligreses que tienen negocios, se podrían beneficiar de la publicidad y pueden considerar uno de varios niveles de patrocinio. Las ganancias del Casino 2013 serán usadas para renovar el techo de la escuela de Incarnation. Todo aquel que este interesado en conocer más sobre los beneficios de los varios niveles, para patrocinar este evento debe comunicarse con Connie Hennessey al 813-884-8326. Costo: $35.00 incluye aperitivos, bufet, música bailable, y mucho más. Boletos estarán a la venta en la oficina parroquial de 9am - 4pm de lunes a viernes.
DIALOGO MATRIMONIAL MDS Somos un movimiento de nuestra Iglesia Católica cuyo objetivo principal es apoyar a las parejas y matrimonios en sus luchas por fortalecer las tres relaciones principales de todo matrimonio: su relación con Dios, su relación de pareja, y la relación con sus hijos. Para lograr ese objetivo realizamos 6 retiros al año. Nos reunimos todos los viernes, donde tratamos, a la luz de la palabra de Dios, y del catecismo de nuestra Iglesia, los temas que crean mayores conflictos en la relación de toda pareja. Los esperamos todos los viernes a las 7:30pm en el salón St. Francis.
Nuestro lema es: “No es necesario cambiar de pareja, sino de actitud”.

La Viña de Raquel nos ofrece un lugar seguro donde se logra reconstruir y redimir los corazones rotos por motivo de un aborto. Allí se ofrece un ambiente confidencial donde no se le juzga, y
donde hombres y mujeres pueden expresarse y reconciliar aquellas emociones que han suscitado después de un aborto, y así comenzar el proceso de renovación y sanación. Manifestando a Cristo: dichosos los que trabajan por la paz

La alegría del amor, la respuesta al drama del sufrimiento y el dolor, la fuerza del perdón ante la ofensa recibida y la victoria de la vida ante el vacío de la muerte: todo tiene su cumplimiento en el misterio de la encarnación de Cristo, de su hacerse hombre y de su compartir con nosotros la debilidad humana para transformarla con el poder de su resurrección (ver Benedicto XVI, La puerta de la fe, 13).
Este Año de la Fe ha abierto la “puerta de la fe”. La “puerta” litúrgica que abre cada año el calendario es la solemnidad de María, la Santísima Madre de Dios. Su Hijo es el Príncipe de la Paz; por eso, su fiesta apropiadamente coincide con el Día Mundial de Oración por la Paz, cuyo tema este año es “Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz”. La paz, escribe el papa, crece en lo profundo de cada alma humana como el don de Dios. Florece cuando trabajamos a construir la paz en el mundo, como individuos o como miembros de la familia humana. A lo largo de enero, los Evangelios dominicales proclaman las “manifestaciones” de Jesús como el Salvador del mundo: en la Epifanía, a las naciones gentiles, en las personas de los reyes magos; en la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, al pueblo de Israel escuchando a Juan Bautista en el río Jordán; en las bodas de Caná, al grupo más pequeño de los discípulos, cuando Jesús convierte el agua en vino; y por fin en la sinagoga de Nazaret, cuando Jesús inaugura su ministerio público proclamando su misión de traer buenas noticias a los pobres, la libertad a los cautivos, la vista a los ciegos y el alivio a los oprimidos.
