Ice Fishing Safety
By: Clay Salzwedel & Ethan Schmit
Today we have information on how to stay safe on the ice this season. Do
not walk on the ice if it is 3 inches or less; it can be very dangerous in some
conditions. Four inches of ice is safe enough to bring out a portable ice
house. Five inches and thicker is safe enough to take an ATV or
snowmobile out on the ice. Eight to twelve inches is enough to bring out a
small ice house, and fifteen inches and above is good enough for a bigger
ice house and larger trucks. Do not take a vehicle on the ice unless there is
12-15 inches of ice on the lake.
When driving a vehicle on ice, there are a few safety tips you can
follow to help keep you from falling through or to help if you do. One of the
biggest things is that you drive slowly and watch out for holes or discolored
ice. Drive with your window down, because if your truck starts sinking it
will provide an easy way out. Unbuckle your seat belt to make sure nothing
stops you from crawling out the open window. Never drive on cloudy ice,
only on clear thick ice. To stay safe have a first aid kit in a waterproof bag
with you on the ice. Wear crampons and always have a set of hand spikes
handy.
Ice fishing tip
To increase the aggressiveness of biting fish or bring schools of fish into the
hole, chum your ice fishing spot. Take wax worms and crush them up and
throw them down your ice fishing hole, or take minnows and squeeze the air
bladders out of them so they sink.

Two men have been sitting out on a lake all day long ice fishing. One has been having no luck
at all while the other has been pulling fish after fish out of his hole in the ice. The man having no luck
finally leans over and asks the other what his secret is.
"Mmmmm mmm mm mmm mmmm mmm mmm," is the reply.
"I'm sorry, what did you say?"
"mmmmm mmm mm mmm mmmm mmm mmm," the successful fisherman repeats.
"I'm sorry, I still didn't understand you."
The man spits something into his hand and says very clearly, "You've got to keep your worms
warm."

Gingerbread houses
By: Kristin Leopold
The second graders invited their parents to help make gingerbread
houses Tuesday at the SSC Elementary School in Heron Lake.
Parents and children gathered to make gingerbread houses out of
milk cartons, graham crackers, frosting, and plenty of candy. Students were
creative with different sizes, shapes, and candy decorations for their houses.
SSC has always had the tradition of second graders building ginger bread
houses with their parents.

Wildcats are taken down by the Patriots
By: Kaylynn Droll & Rachel Mathias
The Wildcats hosted the Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots Tuesday, December 4,
2012. The Patriots stole the game with a final score of 50-43.
The Patriots started strong, taking the lead in the first half.
Meghan Leuthold scored 16 baskets including her 6 out of 10 shots from the
line. Other lead scorers were Paige Leuthold and Hailey VanWyne both
contributing 10 points each. Some key points for HBC included two notable
3 pointers by VanWyne and Paige Leuthold within the first three quarters of
the game. The Patriots were 17 for 28 on their free throws.
The Wildcats dug themselves a hole in the first half, with the half
time score being 18-27. “We had fallen behind by more than we would have
liked” said Courtney Place. Producing 25 points and being spot on with her
free throws, Courtney Place was the lead scorer of the team. Kailey
Wendland enhanced the Wildcat’s score with her 8 points, but fouled out in
the second half. Sonja Peters put up 5 more points for the Wildcats. Peters
and Wendland made two quick steals to try and change the momentum of
the game in the second half. The Wildcats made 13 of the 20 attempted free
throws.
We asked two of the Varsity girls basketball players how they
thought the game went. Sonja Peters said “We started off well but then we
kind of lost it towards the end. But, in the second half, we came back with a
fight. Overall the game went pretty well and we will just have to get them
next time.” Kristin Leopold replied with “We dug ourselves a hole. I am
glad that we were able to come back with success. Also, the two quick steals
changed the momentum of the game.”

Seniors out for basketball
By: Mykil Vonk & Christian Mariscal
This year the Wildcat basketball team has 10 seniors participating. They are all very dedicated
players and have a passion for the game. The 10 seniors are Mark Ferguson, Erik Jass, Justin Jass,
Andrew Kramer, Matthew Soto, Luke Veith, Kurt Schmitz, Kyle Wendland, Will Gouvier, and Colien
Meinders. Six of the seniors are returning letter winners from last year. Five of the seniors participated in
football and all are very athletic. They are Justin Jass, Matthew Soto, Erik Jass, Mark Ferguson, and Kurt
Schmitz. Ferguson was a lineman on both sides of the ball for the Wildcats and won offensive lineman of
the year. He was willing to do whatever was necessary to help the team win. Erik and Justin, the twin
Jass brothers, both got honorable mentioned for their dedication and play. Soto got the senior award,
meaning he was the senior that got the team motivated to play the game. Schmitz got the offensive MVP
award for the Wildcats and also got an all conference award.
The Wildcats traveled to Hills Beaver Creek Tuesday for their second game of the season. The
game didn’t go so well for the Wildcats as they lost to Hills 77-62. Levi Taylor said, “We all played hard
but just came up too short to get the W.” He also mentioned that the defense was a little slack at times
and definitely needs work. Levi added as he walked away, “We will get them next time!” Soto said, “We
couldn’t hit our shot when we were open and still need a lot of work on defense.” Even though the
Wildcats lost their second game of the season, there’s no worry because there are many games to come.
The Cats next game is on December 20 against their big rival Mountain Lake Area. It will be a good
game as the Wildcats look to get revenge after last year in the playoffs when they lost as the Wolverines
ended their season sadly.

Cerebral palsy boy wins wrestling match
By: Gabriella Westman
A lot of people would be afraid to do what Justin did because they are afraid of a person like
him. Justin helped Jared, a wrestler with cerebral palsy, pull his arm over him so Jared could win the
wrestling match. They say, “It is true sportsmanship.” Jared’s dad recorded the match and so did Justin’s
mom. Jared’s dad put it on Facebook, and Justin’s dad put it on YouTube. Many people thought it was
amazing what Justin did for Jared. They had never met before, and Justin was just being a good kid to do
what he did. People have been watching it since it was uploaded on the internet. After Jared pinned down
Justin, the team and the crowd were cheering for Jared for his first win ever.
Some people might ask what cerebral palsy is. Cerebral palsy is brain damage that affects the
motor skills and muscle tone. It may be caused during the birth of the child or maybe even before the
child is born or during the first three to five years of the child’s life. It is one of the most common
diseases in children, and there is no possible way to cure it. The only thing you can do is get therapy and
special equipment. It affects the brain and the nervous system and can be caused by alcohol the mother
drinks or if she takes drugs or has an STD during pregnancy. Everyone’s cerebral palsy is different. They
are not all the same .

Nursing: a career to consider
By Kristin Liepold
Nursing is a profession for all people interested in the health care field.
Nursing focuses on caring for individuals and their families.
Nurses will focus on helping patients attain and maintain ideal health.
There are several areas of expertise in the nursing field. There are
registered nurses, surgical nurses, emergency room nurses, nursing research,
critical care nurses, pediatric nurses, and cancer specialist nurses. Each area
requires a different amount of schooling and level of degree. It takes three to
four years of schooling to become a registered nurse, and applicants must
also pass the licensure examination.
Nurses have different opportunities, privileges, and training than
physicians do. A registered nurse will give the medications and will need to
know how and when to distribute the medication. They need to carefully
and accurately complete the doctor’s orders by carrying on with the
treatment of a patient. The nurse must know wound management such as
stitches. The nurse will be the one to virtually take care of the patient. RNs
will need to know the specifics on the patient’s breathing treatments. They
are in charge of food, bathing, and keeping the patient comfortable. A
surgical nurse will assist the surgeon in anything he/she needs such as
handing him/her surgical tools and prepping the surgical room.
Nurses also have special authorities in their practices. These
prohibitions vary depending on the nurse’s specialty. A nurse cannot
prescribe medication. The doctor is the only one who can admit and dismiss
a patient from the hospital. A nurse cannot pronounce somebody dead.
Alyssa Hendrickson, a senior at SSC, would like to go to college
at Augustana in Sioux Falls to major in nursing. She wants to become a
registered nurse; therefore she will spend four years there. She would like to
start out in a small clinic, and then move on to a larger hospital. “I want to
become a nurse because I enjoy the interaction with people, caring for
patients, and all the job opportunities,” Hendrickson said. “Every day will
be different!”

Bill of Rights Day
By: Riley Lentz
Saturday, December 15 will be Bill of Rights Day. It marks the
day when the Bill of Rights became law, after the Virginia General
Assembly ratified it.
Bill of Rights day was made a national holiday by President
Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the
ratification of the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights, as many Americans
know, were the first ten amendments added to the US Constitution. The
amendments were originally made to protect the basic rights of US citizens.
James Madison was the one who proposed the Bill of Rights to the First
United States Congress. There were originally twelve amendments to the
Bill of Rights, but two were dropped when the states ratified them. One of
the two, however, was finally ratified in 1992, as the Twenty-seventh
Amendment.

Jacobson featured in art show
By: Kristin Liepold and Sonja Peters
On December 7th, Blaise Jacobson featured some of his finest
work at his opening reception at Mankato State University in order to obtain
his masters degree.
Jacobson needed a special recognition for himself and all of his
work so that he can receive his master’s degree. Twenty artistic creations
were displayed on the walls of the MSU Conkling gallery on that day. They
varied in sizes, price ranges, and type of painting. Many of his paintings
were already sold for a vast amount of profit. Jacobson brought some of
them home for his own endearment.
Jacobson has always had an interest in art. “I have always been
attracted to creating and the process of creating,” he stated. “When there is
nothing fun left in it, I move on to something else.” Jacobson is thrilled that
he is always doing something new in art. He likes the change of pace when
he is doing all of his different kinds of art. He can do web design, painting,
illustrations, pottery, and logos. Illustrations are his favorite because it is
always where he starts for any project.
He knows how to be diverse in his own masterpieces and he
knows how to show it to his students. “I never know what to expect when I
am in a classroom,” he confessed. The change of pace is evident in school
because of how many different classes he teaches. The arts have always
been important to him and he encourages kids to keep with it. “Being able to
have art in your daily life is going to make you a more functional and
intelligent human being. It’s a fact,” Jacobson affirmed. “Keep pursuing art,
even if it feels like a hobby. Don’t give up on the fun stuff!”

Today in 1913, the Mona Lisa, one of the world’s most famous
paintings, was recovered after having been missing for two years. It was
stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris on August 21, 1911. The painting
was stolen by Vincenzo Perugia and his brothers. They came on a Sunday
afternoon and camped out in a storage room unnoticed. Then they put on
white workmen’s smocks and waited until sunrise. In the morning, they
carefully took the small painting and left down a stairwell into the streets of
Paris.
Late on Tuesday, there was a media explosion about the huge crime. There
were headlines in lots of newspapers. People couldn’t stop talking about the
Mona Lisa being stolen. It became a very famous painting in history. The
robbery made the painting well-known and important to people around the
world. Today, artists celebrate the finding of the Mona Lisa and hope to be
able to make their own paintings as legendary as Leonardo da Vinci’s
masterpiece is.

ExCEL Award: Excellence in Community, Education, and
Leadership
By: Gaia Betti
The ExCEL Award is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school
juniors who are active in school activities such as fine arts and athletic activities, who volunteer in their
communities, and who show leadership qualities. This award is sponsored by the Minnesota State High
School League, and every member school of the League is invited to nominate one girl and one boy.
ExCEL Award recipients are selected by an independent panel of judges from schools throughout
Minnesota during the month of January. Winners will be recognized and announced on KSTC-TV
(Channel 45) during the broadcast of the 2013 winter tournaments.
For the 17th year of ExCEL Award, Southwest Star Concept School has nominated Kristin Liepold
and Aaron Fest.
Kristin Liepold is the daughter of Larry and Jill Liepold of Okabena. She's involved in many school
activities like volleyball, basketball, softball, FFA, National Honor Society, junior high tutoring, and
band as a bari saxophone player. Kristin is also really active in the community with Adopt-a-Highway,
feeding the homeless, Blankets for Children in the Hospital Program, volunteering as a youth basketball
coach, and president of the Lacrosse 4-H club. She's also an assistant editor for our newspaper, Student
Concept, and a constant member of the SSC honor roll.
Aaron Fest, son of Mark and Lisa Fest of Heron Lake, is the male candidate chosen by the SSC
ExCEL committee. He's involved in many athletic activities including football, basketball, and baseball,
but he's also a part of other school activities as band, choir, speech, drama, FFA, and National Honor
Society. Aaron is involved in many community activities as well; he's a Sunday school and VBS teacher
for his church, a referee, and soloist, he's also the vice president of the Lacrosse 4-H club of Heron Lake.
He has donated his time for road ditch pick up, Meals on Wheels, feeding the homeless, and as officer in
various organizations. He's presently the editor for the school newspaper and is a fixture on the SSC
honor roll.

New School Lunch
By: Marque Loeschen
Along with many new changes this year, SSC also has a new and healthier school lunch
program. Earlier this year Michelle Obama was instrumental in helping to pass the Low-Calorie School
Lunches Policy.
Michelle Obama’s new lunch program has many goals that it wishes to accomplish. For
example: reduce the calorie intake to only 850 calories for all students, slowly decline the obesity in
adolescents, and help teens make healthy food choices outside of school. Points of this plan are well
thought out, but a few need some assistance. Only 850 calories is physically not enough for the growing
teenager. Studies show that active teens should have an intake of 2000 to 5000 calories per day.
Being hungry doesn’t allow students to concentrate on the subjects they are trying to learn. I,
for one, can relate to this. Obama has the right intentions, but just because obesity is happening in some
students, that doesn’t mean they should hinder the whole student body’s ability to learn. I understand that
America is gradually turning into a nation of obese people, and something should be done about it, which
Obama is trying; but I think she should have approached the subject differently. She should have
calculated how many calories an individual would need for the day. Intake of calories varies greatly
among students depending on their age, gender, and size; and whether the student has gym, work, sports,
workout programs, or other after school activities. Evaluating every student this way would be the only
down fall to this plan. So my point is that maybe the whole policy should be reassessed.

The 10 most anticipated video games of 2013
By Ernesto Fonseca
With the last of this year’s game releases coming in, it’s just about
time to call it “game over” for 2012. It was quite an exciting year for games,
but there is no denying it that some games were missed due to their delays,
which angered many people and pushed many of our most-anticipated
games of 2012 to 2013. Although 2013 seemed so far off when all those
delays happened, it’s now much closer, even if it’s still too far away for us.
Seriously weren’t we supposed to have time machines by now?
But enough of that, here are the top 10 most-anticipated games of 2013.
10. Beyond: Two Souls
Coming in at number 10, Beyond: Two Souls has big-name actress
Ellen Page playing Jodie Holmes, a young woman with a powerful ghostly
companion. The troubled girl is on the run from the government, and the
unseen force called Idan defends her from the armed attackers using deadly
force. A very interesting story that begs the question . . . what happens if
you die. This game is set to be released sometime in 2013, and is not yet
rated.
9. Gears of War: Judgment travels back in time to the early days of the
Locaust War (a war that took place before Gears of War 3, 2, and 1 and also
what ignited the Gears of War Trilogy). The story tells the life of Lt. Damon
Baird and Pvt. Augustus Cole before they meet up with their delta team
back in the previous Gears of War games. This installment adds new
elements to the game series which makes sawing your friends in half with
the famous chainsaw rifle all the more satisfying in the multiplayer modes.
This game is set to be released on March 19, 2013. Possibly rated M for
mature since the last games of its series were rated M.
8. DmC: Devil May Cry
The game is set in a parallel universe in the Devil May Cry series.
It starts with Dante, the main protagonist recovering from a hangover, when
he is attacked by a hunter demon. Dante learns he is in Limbo City, a city
that looks calm and quiet but later turns out to be a horrifying parody of
itself, while infested with demons and other atrocious looking monsters who
frequently attempt to kill him whenever he is seen by the demons. Dante
meets a girl named Kat who sends him to meet the leader of “The Order” an
organization labeled by the press as terroristic. The order is fighting against
Limbo’s demons. The Order’s leader Vergil expects Dante to join them.
Dante later finds out the he is the offspring of a demon and an angel. DmC:
Devil May Cry is to be released on January 15, 2013. Another rated M for
mature game. (Photo Credits go to Capcom)
7. Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider explores the intense story of Lara Croft and her
transformation from being a frightened young woman to a hardened
survivor. Setting out to “make her mark,” Laura travels on a ship which is
hit by a very violent storm and splits in two. She and many other individuals
get stranded on an isolated tropical island in the Dragon’s Triangle, also
known as the Devil’s Sea. Laura must find food and water to survive, all
while fighting off the island’s dangerous animal inhabitants and trying to
find the other survivors. Picture Credits go to Square Cnix)
6. Sim City
Building your own city is all in your hands in the new Sim City video game
for PC. Sim City is an upcoming city-building/urban planning simulation
computer game in development by Maxis, a subsidiary of EA. There have
been other Sim City computer games but this one will be a reboot of the
whole thing, which means that Maxis will start from scratch and redesign
Sim City in a whole new way. This title was expected to land in February,
but it is now said to be officially released in March, 2013. (Photo credits go
to EA). The top five will be in the next newspaper.

Cheerleading banquet
By: Gaia Betti
On Tuesday, November 27, the football cheerleaders squad
gathered for the last time this year to celebrate the end of the season.
Members of the squad together with their families and coach spent the night
at Perkins in Worthington. The squad members were: Sadie Volk, Maclane
Rostomily, Alaina Klingenberg, Mariah Feehan, Catelyn LaCour, Caitlin
Leopold, Elizabeth Chepa, and Brooke Freking.
After some delicious food and pleasant conversations, Coach
Tracy Freking gave a speech about the season. She was very satisfied with
the work they had done, the goals reached, and their ability to work as a
team and overcome any difficulty such as having practice all together
because of everyone’s different schedules.
As for every different sport, all the members of the team voted for
the awards:
The “Most improved” award went to Alaina Klingenberg. The “Spirit”
award went to Catelyn LaCour. The “Leadership” award went to Sadie Volk
who received also a plaque as a senior member of the squad. Coach Freking
gave every girl a certificate for their participation and accompanied it with
nice words summarizing the season and their personal contribution to the
successful results.
Tears came when talking about the senior member and main flyer
of the team, Sadie Volk.
When asked about the season, Volk replied, “I’m going to miss seeing and
cheering on the guys at every game, especially watching them as seniors.
I'm going to miss the team meals we do with the girls. My best memory
about this season is the parents’ night performance we did; it was absolutely
perfect! Even though it was windy and freezing, the crowd actually cheered
for us; it was the best feeling ever. It was a dream come true.” Everyone is
absolutely going to miss her spirit and leadership next year, but coach
Freking is also looking forward to junior members’ senior year.
Good job Ladies and thanks for supporting our team during the
season!

Apollo 17 Moon Landing
By: Riley Lentz
Tuesday, December 11, was the thirtieth anniversary of the Apollo 17 moon landing. Apollo 17
was the last Apollo mission by the United States, and it was the last time anyone walked on the Moon.
The three members of the mission were Commander Eugene Cernan, Command Module Pilot
Ronald Evans, and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt. The launch of Apollo 17, which was on
December 7, 1972, was the first night launch of a manned US spaceflight. While Evans stayed in lunar
orbit in the Command Module, Cernan and Schmitt stayed on the Moon in the Taurus-Littrow valley.
They also had the use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, which was the third of its kind on the Moon.
Cernan, Evans, and Schmitt returned to Earth on December 19, 1972, landing somewhere in the
Pacific Ocean. The Apollo 17 mission was the longest lunar landing flight and spent the longest time in
lunar orbit.

Saint Lucy is coming to town!
By Gaia Betti
4812.706 miles and 7 hours by jet from Okabena, little kids are going to
bed hoping that Saint Lucy got their letters.
Tonight, December 12, in Parma, Italy, a special saint is coming to town
to distribute presents in every house.
St. Lucy was a wealthy young Christian martyr who is venerated as a
saint by the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican, Lutheran, and Orthodox
Christians.
Her feast day in the West is December 13; with a name derived from Lux,
Lucis meaning "Light", as she is the patron saint of those who are blind. In
the collective imagination she’s depicted as a blind woman carrying candles
while riding a little donkey.
During the night between the 12th and the 13th she brings presents to all
the little kids. This tradition is not spread all over Italy but just in a few
Northern regions.
Kids have to write a letter asking for their presents, leave straw and carrots
to feed the donkey; milk and cookies for the tired saint. They, then have to
go to bed and close eyes because she doesn’t want to be seen, in order to get
their presents.

The History of Metal
By Walker Crocker
Metal can be traced back to the mid 1960’s with bands like The Jimi Hendricks Experience,
Rolling Stones, and The Yardbirds. The combinations of blues rock and psychedelic rock formed much
of the original basis for heavy metal.
In the early 1970’s metal seemed to be catching the ears of people around the world. Bands
such as Led Zeppelin, Aero Smith, and Kiss became extremely popular in the 1970’s. Metal went
mainstream in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Iron Maiden, Van Halen, AC/DC, and Motley Crue were
some of the premier metal bands during this time period. Between 1983 and 1984 metal went form an 8
percent to a 20 percent share of all records in the U.S.
Recent trends in metal are power metal, fast fusion meal, death metal, and metalcore.
I hope this article gave some people insight on what metal really is.

Tips for your split ends
By: Selina Thatcher
Here are a few tips for your split ends. This is something that has been troubling me personally,
and I can’t tell you for sure if I’d try these but they are interesting. So I’m giving you advise since I’ve
been able to find lots of new ways besides getting your hair trimmed all the time.
• Milk and Cream: This is a tried and tested grandma’s tip for split ends. All you need to do is take half
a cup of milk, and mix in one spoon of cream. Blend and beat thoroughly. Then apply this onto the scalp
and hair tips. Let it be on for around 15 minutes and wash off normally.
• Beer: Beer! Beer is just not meant for your parties and celebrations, but it can give you wonderful hair
too. It’s one of the most effective conditioners. All you need to do is take some beer in your palms and
massage it into the hair. Ensure that the beer has soaked into your hair follicle. Now wash off, be careful
while washing off, you may just have a lingering smell of beer in your hair. (Please shampoo
responsibly!)
• Olive Oil: Our beloved olive oil never fails us. For treating split ends, warm olive oil must be massaged
into the hair. This acts as a deep conditioner. All you need to do is heat olive oil in your oven, and then
apply it. Pull up your shower cap and loaf around the house for around 30 minutes. Wash your hair as
you do regularly.
• Mayonnaise: Yumm! Mayonnaise is an alternative to avocado. If you cannot find an avocado, simply
apply mayonnaise on your hair and concentrate on the split ends again. This can be done twice a week.
And all these great ideas and directions came from the Indian and make-up beauty blog. The website is
http://makeupandbeauty.com/split-hair-ends-home-remedies-treatment/
So for more ideas check it out!
