Q1. What is a Hotel ?

A hotel is a public place that provides boarding and lodging to

customer on payment. Common law states that “A hotel is a

place where all who conduct themselves properly, and who

being able to pay for their entertainment, are received, if there

be accommodation for them,” and who without any stipulated

engagement as to the duration of their stay or as to the rate

of compensation, are while there, supplied at a reasonable

cost with their meals, lodging and other services and attention

as are necessarily incident to the use as a temporary home.

A hotel may be called as an establishment where primary

business is to provide to the general public lodging facilities

and which may also furnish one or more of the various

services such as food, beverage, laundry, uniformed services

etc. As per dictionary, the term ‘Hotel’ refers to ‘a house of

entertainment of travelers’

Inn: Public houses in early times in England were called inns.

Normally the term inn was meant for the finer establishments

catering to the nobilities and clergy. In France these were

called Hostelries.

Tavern: The house frequented by common man was known

as taverns. The important establishments in France were

called Cabarets.

Hostel: Derived from the word host and was used very late.

The head of the hostel was called Hostler in French, while in

England he was called Inn-keeper.

Q2. Meal Plan in a Hotel

1. European Plan (EP) :

This plan includes only the room charges and morning tea in

some cases. All other charges are charged extra. Most

commercial hotels run on this plan.

2. Continental Plan (CP.) :

This plan includes room charges and a continental breakfast.

All additional charges are considered extra. [ A continental b/f

consists of juices, toast or rolls, butter, cheese, jam, tea or

coffee but no eggs.]

3. Bermuda Plan (BP) :

This plan includes room charges optional early morning tea

and an American breakfast. [ American b/f is a buffet breakfast

not served in the room]

4. American Plan (AP) :

This plan includes all principal meals. It includes room

charges with optional morning tea, English B/F, lunch,

afternoon tea and dinner. It is mostly found in resort hotels

and in commercial hotels catering to groups sent by airlines

and companies or travel agents. This plan is also known as

'all inclusive plan' or 'full board' or 'en pension' [English

breakfast has all courses like American B/F and ham, beacon,

meat is also included].

5. Modified American Plan (MAP) :

This plan has evolved out of the American plan. It includes

room charges with optional morning tea, English B/F and an

option of lunch or dinner. It is also called as 'demi pension' or

'half board'. This facilitates the guests to eat out for one meal.

It is usually used for groups where meal coupons are provided

to the guests (coupon is valid only for a day ) and the coupon

cost is included in the room rent.

Q3. Taxation • Luxury tax, Expenditure tax, Sales tax, Value

added tax and other statutory taxes. • Service Charges.

Q4. Types of Hotel Rooms

Some of the commonly found rooms in accommodation industry are listed as below:

1. Single Room: It is the room which provides single occupancy.

This room only has single bed. The size of the bed is normally

3ft x 6 ½ft. Most hotels have twin or double rooms and charge

for single room of occupied by one person.

2. Double Room: It is the room which provides double

occupancy. This room has double bed. The size of the double

bed is 5 feet by 6 feet.

3. Triple Room: It is the room which provides occupancy for 3

people. Either it has 2 double & 1 single bed or 3 single beds.

This type of rooms is suitable for groups and delegates of

meetings and conferences.

4. Quad Room: It is the room which provides occupancy for four

guests. Either it has four single beds or two singles & one

double bed.

5. Twin Room: It is the room which is meant for double

occupancy. These rooms have two single beds separated by

a bed - side table.

6. Hollywood Room: It is the room which provides double

occupancy. It has two single beds close to each other with a

common head - board.

7. Studio Room: It is a living or sitting room. It has a sofa-cum-

bed

2. Parlor Room: It is designed with the minimum basic

requirement to live. It does not have the facilities of a bed

room and hence used only for day use purpose.

3. Cabana Room: It is the room which is situated near

swimming pool or sea beach. This room is used for changing

purpose. It has facilities for a shower, lockers, wooden

benches, etc.

4. Suite Room: Suite Room is a combination of one or more bedrooms & a drawing room. It may also contain a bar & small kitchen. The decor of such units is of very high standards, aimed to please the affluent guests who can afford the high tariffs of the room category. According to the design and market segment hotels give different names to suites like honeymoon suite, Executive suite, Deluxe suite, Maharaja suite etc.

5. Penthouse: A room that opens onto the roof & may be

accompanied by a swimming pool, patio, a tennis court, &

other facilities & amenities. It has very opulent decor and

furnishings and is among the costliest rooms in the hotels,

preferred by celebrities and affluent people.

6. Executive Room: A room that has a large bedroom with a

sitting area provided with chairs &usually a sofa & coffee

table. This is really a combination bedroom-cum-sitting room.

Sometimes, a temporary wooden partition may be provided

between the sitting area and bed room space. They are also

known as junior suites.

7. Lanai Room: It provides a large balcony attached with the

room. From the balcony one gets a view of natural scenic

beauty likes sea beach, mountain, valley etc. They are usually

found in resort hotels.

8. Duplex Room: They are two rooms at different levels inter

connected through internal staircase. Usually one room is

used as drawing room and other as bed room. This room is

generally used by business men who wish to use the lower

level as an office and meeting place and the upper level room

as a bedroom.

9. Hospitality Room: It is used by the guest to entertain his or

her guests. It is hired on hourly basis and has facilities such

as sofa sets, dining table, T.V, mini bar etc.

10. Interconnecting Room: These are two rooms connected to each other by one interconnecting door. These rooms are preferred by groups and families.

11. Adjoining Room: These rooms are situated next to each

other sharing a common wall between them. These rooms

may be given to the groups.

12. Queen Room: A room has a queen size bed. The size of the

bed is 5 feet by 6 & ½ feet. An extra bed may be added to this

room on the request of a guest and charged accordingly.

13. King Room: A king room has king size bed. The size of the

bed is 6 feet by 6 & ½ feet. An extra bed may be added to this

room on the request of a guest and charged accordingly.

14. Double-Double A double- double room has two double beds and is normally preferred by a family or group as it can accommodate four persons together. This room is usually Preferred by families and is also known as family room and twin double room

15. Physically challenged Guest Rooms:

Handicapped-accessible rooms feature connecting doors to

another handicapped-accessible room.

• The guest rooms are located close to the elevators and fire

exits.

• Entry door is 94 cm wide.

• Floor to ceiling mirror available in the room.

• The safety box are installed at shoulder-height of a sitting

person (100 cm).

• Lower cloth rails in certain areas e.g. left cupboard, small

rail.

• The top of the mattress is 70 cm high and 46 cm when

special mattress base is installed (upon request).

• The bedrooms feature a bench in front of the beds with a

height of 50 cm.

• Along the length of the bed (210 cm) between bed and

cupboard width of 155 cm maneuvering space next to bed.

• Plug Socket in 30 cm height.

• Light switch in 73 cm height.

• A/C control 75 cm height.

Q5. Classification of Hotels on the basis of location

1. Downtown / Commercial / City Hotel

These hotels are situated at the heart of city, basically

designed to carting sheet stay business clients. The hotel is

very expensive at the startup cost is very high.

Hotel Vaishali is an example of Downtown hotel in

Kathmandu, Nepal.

2. Resorts

These hotels are eco-friendly commercial hotel, basically

designed for long stag guest entitled from hill, bank of the

river, where the natural beauty has its significances. In

European countries, resorts are seasonally operated cratering

establishment. Resorts provide all the facilities as offered star

3. Transit Hotels/Airport Hotel

Transit hotel are usually located such as airport, railway,

station, bus station, harbor or ports to catering the passenger.

4. Motels

The words motel was derived from two interrelated words.

Motor and Hotel from the Milestone Mo-Tel of San Luis

Obispo, California. America motel are hotel situation on

highway having facilities, parking, lodging, foods and

maintenance. The target people are passenger, and Motels

are designed usually with parking area for motor vehicles.

6. Flotel .

Floatel:

They are hotels that float on sea. They are stationery in nature and have no permanent connection with the main land. Flotel is a portmanteau of the terms floating hotel, refers to the installation of living quarters on top of rafts or semi-submersible platforms. Flotels are used as hotels on rivers or in harbour areas, or as accommodation of working people, especially in the offshore oil industry

16. Efficiency Room:

For hotels, an efficiency generally is considered to be one

room that includes a small kitchen area, or kitchenette, and

typically also has a dining table with chairs and a separate

bathroom. According to

Merriam-Webster, an efficiency apartment is "a small

apartment that usually includes furniture and has a small and

simple kitchen area." For hotels, it is a standard room that has

added amenities -- the kitchenette and table -- with an efficient

use of space.

Q6. Essential documents for Indian nationals

1. Visitors need to possess an identification proof, which can

easily be fulfilled by the documents such as driver's license, state

ID card or passport. These documents are asked to ensure the

guest's security.

2. Guests can also be asked to present a reservation

confirmation. If a guest books a hotel room online, you will usually

be e-mailed a confirmation statement with a special confirmation

number that guarantees your reservation. Guests who book a hotel

through a travel agent are usually provided with a print out with the

confirmation number on it.

3. Guests should also carry their credit card or their checkbook

which has been used to make the reservation as it also comes

under the domain of necessary documents.

Q7. Essential documents for Foreign nationals

1. Foreign guests should carry along a valid identification

proof which can be established by a

passport, a driver's license or an original (or a certified

copy) of a birth certificate. These

documents are asked to ensure the guest's security.

2. Foreign nationals should also carry along a proof of

citizenship which can easily be fulfilled by

the above mentioned documents.

3. Foreigners should surely carry their passport(original) as

their photocopies are essentially

required by the hotel staff for further assistance.

4. Foreign nationals are also required to fill a Form-C (Hotel

Arrival Report) which need to be

completely and accurately filled while checking in a hotel.

5. Foreign nationals should also carry along their Visa which

comprises of all the necessary

permits.

Q8. The different modes of payment through which guest can settle or pay their bills are:

Q10. What is over booking?

Sometimes it can be necessary for a hotel to sell more rooms than it actually has available. To those unfamiliar with the internal workings of the Hospitality Industry, which is always influenced by and somewhat vulnerable to the vicissitudes of the global economic climate, that may sounds strange. But experienced hoteliers will tell you that selling rooms/spaces that you don't have – Overbooking – can sometimes be the only way to protect a hotel from diminished revenue due to unexpected cancellations, no-shows or booking errors.

Q11. No Show

1. Person who fails to attend a meeting he was supposed to,

or who buys a ticket to a public performance (a concert, for

example) but does not use it.

2. Passenger who neither cancels his or her reservation nor

shows up for the flight. The airline will cancel his or her all

other reservations (such as for connecting flights, if any) if not

otherwise notified, and usually will not refund any portion of

the ticket price.

3. Shipper who fails to deliver a booked shipment to the

carrier. He or she may still have to pay the full freight.

4. Traveler who fails to show up for a reserved room without

notifying the hotel of the cancellation.

Departments that make a Hotel

As an outsider when you look at a hotel, the operation appears

to be pretty simple, selling of rooms and your favorite food and

beverage. But, actually, hotel is a highly complex operation

where several departments function and interact to create a

home away from home.

Hotel as a functional unit comprises of several departments.

The major departments of hotel are as under:

1. Front Office: This department performs various functions like reservation,

2. Housekeeping: The housekeeping department is

upkeep of rooms, public areas, back areas, and surroundings

in a hotel.

3. Food and Beverage Service: This department looks after

the service of food and drinks to guests.

4. Kitchen: All the food and beverages that are served to the hotel guest is prepared in kitchen.

5. Engineering and Maintenance: It looks after the

maintenance of all the equipment’s, furniture and fixture

installed in a hotel.

6. Accounts: This department maintains all the financial transactions.

7. Security: The security department of a hotel is responsible

for the overall security of the hotel building, in-house guests,

visitors, day users, and employees of the hotel, and also their

belongings.

8. H R department: Human Resource department is

responsible for the acquisition, utilization, training, and

development of the human resources of the hotel.

9. Sales and Marketing: The responsibility of increasing the sales of the hotel’s products and services is the major task of the department.

10. Purchase:The purchase department is responsible for procuring the
