Civil Engineering Awards 2016

The Awards• Project over £1 million Award - to promote the excellence of projects in the engineering profession.• • Project under £1 million Award - to promote the excellence of projects in the engineering profession.

• The Community Award - to recognise projects that improve the local community environment.• • Designed in the South West Award - to recognise regional contribution to international projects.• • The Public Choice Award - to give the public and members the opportunity to vote for their favourite

project.

• Showcase Award - awarded at the discretion of the judging panel.

The Award CeremonyThe judges’ decisions will be announced and the Awards presented at the ICE South West Awards Ceremony. The President of the Institution of Civil Engineers Sir John Armitt, will present the winners with their Award(s) and certificates.

PublicityThe winning projects will be announced via our monthly e-newsletter, which reaches more than 6000 members across the region. In 2016 an awards film will be produced, highly publised externally and made available via YouTube. Companies responsible for the winning projects will be able to use a specially designed ICE awards logo to promote their achievement. The winning projects will feature as speakers at the ICE South West AGM. All short listed projects may be considered for subject matter for evening meetings, exhibitions, displays or visits during the following year. Finally all entries will be featured in the Awards Booklet and be entered into the People’s Choice Award.

Note: Please ensure that the information given on the nomination form is full and complete, as only information from this source will be used to compile the winners’ certificates.

Awards Judging 2016

Judging PanelRichard Fish, Independent ConsultantChris Millard, Director, Balfour BeattyHeather Barnes, President ADEPT Chris Burton, Director, Tony Gee & Partners Final judge to be confirmed.

ProcessEntries will be short listed by an awards panel made up of ICE South West Fellows. The final judging panel will visit the short listed schemes during week commencing 23rd May to determine the award winners. Entrants of the Designed in the South West category will need to give a short presentation to the judges.

Projects over and under £1m Successful projects should demonstrate innovation, creativity and social value whilst embedding a safety and sustainability culture. Winning projects should demonstrate how civil engineering has gone beyond the technical remit to make an excellent contribution to the engineering world.

Community AwardThe Community Award recognises projects that improve public space, infrastructure and enhance the living and working environment for the local community. Consideration will be given to projects which show community and local media engagement, promotion of civil engineering as well as innovation and ingenuity.

Designed in the South WestThis category rewards projects of excellence situated outside of the region, developed by teams in the South West. It recognises the significance of work conducted by the region’s civil engineers both nationally and globally.

Showcase AwardThese are awarded at the discretion of the judging panel for projects that they feel demonstrate a significant contribution to society.

Civil Engineering Awards 2016

EligibilityAll professions working in the built environment are invited to enter projects or phases of projects.

Please note, for all six award categories, entrants are not required to state which category they wish to be considered for. The judges will assign each of the projects to one or more categories after all entries have been received.

Application FeeThe application fee for each entry must be paid upon submission of the entry.

Entry fee per project: £200 + VAT

The awards are free to enter for local authorities and companies with less than 40 employees. Please tick relevant section of the application form if this applies.

Rules of Entry

1. Projects considered for the Awards must have been constructed or designed within the ICE South West Region, and completed between 1st January and 31st December 2015. If there are any queries about whether the location falls within the South West, please contact the regional office.

2. Entries must be submitted electronically (Memory stick, file sharing site or email).

3. Closing date for entries is Friday 11 March 2016.

4. All documents and photographs submitted as part of the entry may be used in ICE regional publicity material unless specifically requested otherwise, with no copyright issues. ICE will assume that the person submitting the entry has obtained the necessary permissions to use the supporting material for the entry and associated ICE publicity, and has also informed all relevant parties of the submission.

5. Agreement to submit an entry must be obtained from the commissioning authority, the designer and contractor. Evidence of prior written approval to the entry by each relevant party will be required by the judges, before any entry can be accepted and can go on for consideration. If the nomination form cannot be signed, alternative proof of agreement must be provided.

6. The application fee for each entry must be paid upon submission of the entry if applicable.

How to enterThe intention to submit an entry should be advised by Friday 19 February 2016.

Submission of a formal written entry is required no later than Friday 11 March 2016.

Entries must be submitted on memory stick, using file share or email, with all of the below included:

• A completed nomination form. With entry fee.

• PDF version of report which consists of no more that 1,500 words with unlimited diagrams or photographs. To include highlights and merits of project.

• Up to 10 high resolution photographs, for use in Awards booklet, promotional materials and judging.

• Up to 10 slide PowerPoint presentation for use during judging.

• Completed press release information form, with agreed quotations regarding the project.

• One PowerPoint slide, with the title and photo of the project using the ICE South West template.

• 300 word summary of the project, which will be used in the award nomination booklet and used on website for People’s Choice Award.

• The application fee for each entry must be paid upon submission of the entry if applicable.
