not only did we ocus on springromance this issue, but we also

included a great deal o art

    editorial work. Our cover icon,

    Ashley Hinshaw, was so much

un to work with. She has three big movies out

and is making her way through this competitive

industry with her head set strong on her shoulders.

Ive noticed lately that a lot o people are really

    ocusing on sel-empowerment, meditation and

really trying to become stronger individuals. I

truly believe that you cant be happy with your

surroundings, including your loved ones, riends,

coworkers and overall environment, until you are

happy with your own person. You need to enjoy

being around yoursel beore others can enjoy

being around you. So i you nd yoursel unhappy,

nd the root cause and work on resolving it.

People always ask me how I know what the right

things are to wear or buy when I go shopping. This

is my rule: I it isnt comortable, dont buy it. I

you dont love it, dont buy it. I its too tight, toobig or just doesnt t right, dont buy it. You may

sometimes think: I can get away with thisthat

just means its not right. My avorite things to wear

include a pair o skinny jeans, a white tank (Hanes),

and then dress it up with some cute shoes and

jewelry. One cannot go wrong with that combo.

Ive learned a lot being in the ashion world, and

the most important thing I can tell people is this:be yoursel, no matter what. Lastly, be comortable

    in you.

Hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed

    creating it!

Red wine cupcakes with creamcheese rosting! Does it get

any better than that? Ive yetto come across any. Thesecupcakes are the tastiest Ive

made. They werent too di-cult to make but i you attemptthem I recommend wearing an

apron because as we all know, red wine stains, and its easy to

get carried away when using anelectric mixer. The batter andwine is supposed to stay IN thebowl.

    dcts:

    In a heatproo bowl combine

cocoa powder and chocolatechips and pour in the boilingwater. Using a whisk, stir the

chocolate until its all melted. Ina larger bowl, cream the butterand sugar together. Then beat

in each egg one at a time untiltheyre all mixed in. In a sepa-rate bowl combine the four,

baking powder, and salt. Thenslowly add that to the mixturemaking sure its all combined.

Add some o the chocolate tothe mixture, then some o the

wine, alternating until all o it blended. Pour batter into you

papered mun tins, almost athe way to the top. Awesome tiI learned rom my mom: Use a

ice cream scoop to spoon youbatter into the cupcake paperIt is SO much easier than any

thing else Ive tried! Pop thosin the oven at 350 degrees fo

about 20 minutes and let cool.

    stg:

Beat the butter with the salt unt

its nice and fuy. Then add thcream cheese and continue beating until its all combined. Ad

the powdered sugar to the bowabout 1/2 C at at a time and beato combine. Keep adding mor

until the rosting is at the consistency and sweetness-level thayou desire.

The site recommends a Shirawine, which I used, because o it

sweeter taste. I added some resugar sprinkles to top them oand give them an extra sparkle.

    With a US cosmetic

market reaching closeto $17.5 billion, plas-tic surgery is huge and

not going out o styleanytime soon. Chances are that you or oneof your BFFs has already had or is think-

ing o having a rejuvenating procedure in

the next ve years. Statistics rom the year2010 shows that 91% of patients were

women and approximately ve millionprocedures (including both surgical andminimally invasive) were perormed. The

top ve surgical procedures include breastaugmentation, nose reshaping, eyelidsurgery, liposuction and tummy

tuck. Any person is an educatedconsumer likely has done some personal

research to investigate the details o these

surgeries, but do you know everythingthere is to know about them?

Breast augmentation surgery began in1962 with the rst silicone-gel breastimplant. A couple years later, the rst

saline breast implant was introduced by

a company in France. When compared tothe silicone variety, the saline-gel implants

have demonstrated a higher likelihood ocosmetic side eects such as rippling orwrinkling; thus the now th generation

silicone-gel breast implant is the preerredchoice or both breast augmentation andreconstructive surgeries. Complications

such as breast implant rupture, breastpain, skin wrinkling or unavorable

scarring may occur. The age and designo a medical breast implant will mostlikely predict the rupture rate. Saline based

implants have been noted to have a 7-10%rupture risk at 10 years post-implantation.Newer generation silicone breast implants

have a better, approximate 1% rupture rateat about 6 years post-implantation, which

is a median age or the implant. Either dueto device leakage or excessive scar tissueormation causing capsular contracture, the odds o repair or revision surgeries

are approximately 20% at three yearspost-surgery and 3% at seven years post-surgery. Although controversial in the

past, most studies have not supported anydenite link between silicone-gel breastimplants and the onset o rheumatologic

    or autoimmune disease.

    Amongst the benets o breast

augmentation surgery are the aestheticand mental health aspects. Most surveysollowing surgery indicate that women

experience improvement in physicalhealth, appearance, social lie, sel-

condence, sel-esteem and sexualunctioning. Many women look orwardto enjoying the pleasure o wearing clotheswithout having to support their breasts

with pushup bras or showing o theirbodies in bikinis that they couldnt pull obeore. Others just want to get rid o breast

sagginess that has occurred over timeeither rom weight loss, nursing babiesor just getting older. No matter what the

reason or the breast augmentation, one

should always weigh the benets vs. therisks mentioned above, including the cost

o such surgeries. It is also a good idea tohave at least a second or even third opiniondepending on the area you live in and the

    accessibility to experienced board-certiedplastic surgeons.

Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, is apopular procedure that is used to address

developmental (such as clet lip andpalate) or injury-related abnormalities(such as nasal racture or blunt trauma)to the physical appearance o the nose.

Closed, as opposed to open, rhinoplastyoers quicker recovery, decreased damage, less visible scarring, and less swelling

ater the procedure. Complications orhinoplasty are o lower likelihood butmay include post-operative bleeding,

inection, scars that impact the breathingrom airways, or accidental peroration othe nasal septum. Also, i too much o the

nasal ramework is removed, then it mayhave a negative consequence on the shapeand stature o the nose. Now the pros o

nose reshaping include eeling good aboutones appearance by removing deormities(either by injury or birth deect) or

improvement o breathing by opening upnasal passages. The aesthetic improvement

    33/121sprinG 2012 iCon 3

can be achieved in a relatively short periodo time and is permanent.

Our third topic o plastic surgery dealswith eyelid surgery or commonly

reerred to as blepharoplasty. As acosmetic procedure, it is done to improve

puy lower eyelid bags and to reducethe wrinkling o skin. The proceduremay be important i it involves uppereyelid skin protrusion that aects the

individuals peripheral vision, whichmay impact their ability to drive or read.Although initial swelling and bruising

resolve ater a couple weeks post-surgery, the ull benets and stability othe procedure are seen several months

ater surgery. Scars, when they occur, are typically well hidden and disappearin due time. Although the risks o

eyelid surgery (such as blindness, blurred vision, corneal abrasion anddry eye syndrome) appear to be low, the

benets o improved appearance andimproved eyesight can be long-lastingand satisactory or many patients.

Liposuction is a term that most peoplehave likely heard in their lietime thus

ar. Basically, the idea involves removingat rom various parts o the body suchas the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and

    arms. Here is a chance to get the bodyyou always wanted but simply could notully achieve with diet and exercise alone;

also it becomes a great way to improveyour physique and condence. It is notused to treat obesity or get rid o cellulite/

stretch marks. The risk and complicationsincrease with the more at that is removed, sometimes causing lumpiness or dents

in the skin. Bruising, swelling, pain andnumbness are short-lived eects ollowingliposuction and typically resolve in a ew

weeks. More serious complications includeallergic reactions to medications usedduring surgery or anesthetic (lidocaine)

toxicity, inection , damage to the skin,

puncture to an internal organ, bloodclots or at clots, fuid imbalance and even

burns (by riction o the cannula used orvia the ultrasound device emanating heat).Generally speaking, liposuction is eective

at removing at deposits in small areas.Improvement in body contour is visible

either immediately ater surgery or withinmonths as the swelling disappears. Theresults may be long-lasting i one continuesto exercise, eats a healthy diet and does not

gain weight. Fatty bulges may likely returnater liposuction i weight is gained again.

Last but not least, a tummy tuck orabdominoplasty is a surgical procedureaimed at making the abdomen more

rm. The procedure involves removingextra skin and at rom the middle andlower abdomen to then tighten the muscle

and ascia o theabdominal wall. Itis usually popular

with women whohave loose tissuesater pregnancy or

    individuals with

sagging ater losinga greater amount o

    weight. More seriouscomplications romthis procedure

include blood clots(lung clots rombeing inactive ater

    surgery, strokes,heart attacks),inections, bleeding,

fuid accumulation, pain, nerve damage, and heavy scarring.

Whether you decideto do a completeor mini tummy tuck, benets include

better dened abdominal muscles, tighterskin, reduced or removed cellulite/stretchmarks, and o course looking great in a

    bikini or bathing suit.

Graduating rom CornellUniversity, Dr. Diaz attend-

ed the prestigious AlbertEinstein College o Medi-

cine in New York with the intention o

going into the eld o cardiothoracicsurgery. Ater his rst year he aggres-sively sought an internship with a

heart surgeon, however upon work-ing alongside his mentor discovered

that although he had tremendousrespect and admiration or the eldit was also very emotionally drain-ing. He explains that what he hadnt

realized was how many amilies hewould have to deliver bad news toand how oten. In his second year

o medical school he was burdenedwith the new idea o nding adierent area o surgery that he was

interested in, and began looking intothe many dierent types.

Taking an internship at a hospitalwith a plastic surgeon, Diaz ound

    his true passion.

I loved it so much, and thought

it was so interesting because everyday was so dierent. One day we

would be reconstructing a breastcancer patients breast, and thenext day a deormity in a child.

Though excited about hisnewound calling, Diaz consideredthe lengthy amount o time it would

take to achieve his goal: our yearso medical school and anotherve o surgical training, topped

with still another two years oplastic and reconstructive surgery

training. Driven and ambitious,he approached the chie o plasticsurgery - something unheard o

or a second year medical student- and asked how he could nishhis schooling aster. Simply and

sternly he was told, Graduaterst in your class. He was then

inormed o a special acceleratedprogram available to the topgraduating medical studentswhich allows them to combine

both trainings in ve years ratherthan seven, and this is what hestrived to accomplish.

was also always the lie o the party -always socializing, attending eventsand parties, never revealing the

endless hours he spent reading andre-reading all o his text books andstudying during any spare minute

    he had.

Diaz eorts paid o. At graduation,

he was the only medical student inthe entire class to win an award inall three categories o academics,

scientic research, and volunteerwork. The academic award wasthe Alpha Omega Alpha; a strictly

academic award thats only given tothe top 10% of medical students. Most

importantly, the Board o Medicineand the Board o Plastic Surgeonsgranted him the opportunity to dothe accelerated program at the Albert

    Einstein College o Medicine.

    Now a well-known plastic surgeon

in Beverly Hills, Diaz explainedthe pros and cons o being a plasticsurgeon. He strongly emphasized

how rewarding it is to be able to helppeople eel better about themselves,

and says its truly lie surgery becausethere may be one thing about their

eatures a person doesnt like, andby xing just one thing their wholelives are altered because o howmuch it boosts their condence. He

suggests, or instance, to imagine ayoung girl whos very pretty but wasborn with a large nose, which she is

sel-conscious about. By adjustingsomething so small as a nose, thisgirls entire lie will be changed, rom

her social lie in high school andcollege to potential relationshipsand lie partners, all because o one

surgical procedure. He says knowingthat hes helped improve someoneslie is the true reward.

Aside rom plastic and recon-structive surgery, Diaz also does

plastic surgery on burn patientstwice a week. He loves these oper-ations very much, and is honored

to help so many people that suerrom such disguring incidents. The amount o heartelt emotion

Diaz speaks with about his workshows a truly genuine passion or

helping others through his ownpersonal skills.

Although his list o pros heavily

out-weigh the cons, he does havea ew minor ones, rstly being, ocourse, the extensive schooling,

that demanded time and extremeeort rom his lie. He says thatbeing a plastic surgeon in Beverly

Hills is hard because theres somuch competition. The majority

o surgeons specialize in a certainarea in order to prevail. Diaz

ocuses mainly on acial and breastsurgery although he said he wouldenjoy working in all aspects o theeld. He states, Beverly Hills is

ull o plastic surgeons; you have tond a niche that makes you standout somehow in order to succeed.

When I inquired about what hedoes when a patient comes in who

has clearly already had too muchplastic surgery, his response was arespectable one. Regardless o the

money he would make by just doingthe surgery requested, Diaz willactually turn away patients who come

    in wanting excessive procedures that

they dont look like they need. Hecompared it to aspiring actors - i

you take every audition and everyrole you get rather than workinghard or the good roles, youre going

to end up burning yoursel andyour name out, and then nobody isgoing to want you. The same goes or

surgeons. I you operate on someonewho looks like theyve had too many

procedures, they may end up lookingworse and then the surgeon ends upwith a bad reputation.

Diaz plastic surgery practice has beenso successul that he has been eaturedon television shows such as Dr.

90210, Dr. Drews Lifechangers, E!News and NBCs Extra.

Diaz is currently in the processo creating a skin care line that

he believes will make skin lookrejuvenated and younger.

Additionally, Dr. Diaz has receiveda degree with distinction in PlasticSurgery Research or articles hes

published about plastic surgery. Hehas received awards rom the NewYork Regional Society o Plastic

Surgery, the Monteore MedicalCenter and the Albert EinsteinCollege o Medicine.

As Gina herself puts it, FillyBrown is awesome. Im biased

because my ace is in every rame.Filly is a girl from East L.A. whois the matriarch o her amily.

Her mother is incarcerated, shes got a single dad, shewatches over her little sister and

she loves music. Its just likeanyone would love anything, like dancing or bioengineering -

they have a passion and a dreamor something.

Though easy comparisons wouldbe to Craig Brewers TerrenceHoward-starring Hustle &

    Flow and Curtis Hansons

Eminem semi-biography 8Mile, Filly focuses more on

the amily contingent. Says Gina,It goes back to story, which Ireally like because its not this

just so happens that through herattempt to help the amily hermusic gets out there a little bit.

Its not like superstardom, butshes ound by an indie label,

which exposes her to a biggerlabel, and everything comescrashing down because its built

    on lies and deception.

Regarding what she considersthe heart o the picturesamilial core, she continues, Idont think a lot o critics have

spoken about the psychology o[the ilm]. People we love, wesomehow dont see their laws.

Sometimes we dont want to seethem; sometimes we try to ignorethem. The reviews will say, Filly

opportunity to work on the lmalongside Lou Diamond Phillips,Emilio Rivera, Jenni Rivera and the

legendary Edward James Olmos, all o whom she was inspirationallywelcomed by, Ginas lie has hit the

ast track. Things have propelledrather quickly, and the peoplearound me suddenly think Im

amous and rich which is hystericalbecause Im neither. They think

you change when really yourelike, No, youre changing! I justate a $2.99 salad from Pavillion!

Chill out, you know? Lie is notthat dierent. Everybody says,Oh, are you gonna buy a new car?

Are you gonna move? No, Imgonna drive my 99 Honda andIm not moving because I love my

neighborhood and I love my rent! They dont know the inside scoopwhere youre still eating avocado

sandwiches or dinner. And I loveavocado sandwiches!

Its really interesting to parallelthe lm with whats going on inmy lie and what would go on in

anybodys lie when you get knee-deep in the industry and youcan be changed, morphed and

molded in to something thatsnot you. And when its not you,how lasting is it, really?

One could sensibly presume theexcitement eervescing romevery minute o Ginas lie is

new, but her outlook has beenemphatically optimistic or as longas she can remember. My ather

used to always say to me when Iwas younger, Gina, the worstthing that can happen is you die.

As morbid as that sounds, its true.Lie kind o rocks i you look at it

glass-hal-ull. Everyone says, Staylike that, because youre gonna getjaded! Why? I dont get it, I look

at these people who do what theylove every day and Im like, howare you not on top o the world?

I see lie a little dierently. I dontknow, maybe I dont see lie a littledierently; maybe Im completely

out o my mind. I eel like theindustry is dying or positivity, because people are so blown away

that Im like this. We dont have tobe jaded and negative and nasty;life is way too good for that. We

should want to help each otherout. We should want to change theworld. We should want to use our

    money or good!

What truly keeps Gina going these

days is the deserved recognition oher art. Thats all Ive ever reallywanted. For me, this is all really

exciting and really great, and Ijust want to do more and better.People will look and say, Wow, she

can act! Its like, Thank you! Ivebeen working so hard to let yousee that! Now that you know, lets

    make some awesome art!

    Before Filly Brown, Gina co-

starred as, as she puts it, a crazyPuerto Rican rom the block in

the teen hip-hop comedy GoFor It, which released throughLionsgate On Demand. Filly

came her way when its directorsapproached her upon the Go ForIt screening at the Los Angeles

Latino International Film Festival.Through their interest, the helpo riend Jesse Garcia (actor,

Quinceaera) and just howimpressed Gina was with the script- which she read in under an hour

did not nish reading it that ast.A ew days later Jesse got me anaudition and that same night they

pretty much oered me the role.

    Gina perormed spoken word

because each article kind o changesit - they say something dierent, like

    that I trained or months. I did nottrain or months! I did not train atall! I wish I had trained or months;

I probably would have been waybetter! I just literally threw mysel

in to the recording studio. I tookthe same approach to acting as Idid to the music. Knowing exactlywhat the lyrics were - having my

lines like butter - it was somethingI didnt have to worry about. Anykind o research I might do or a

script, I did or the music. I wouldwatch other recording artists andpick up their little tips by seeing

how ar they stood rom the mic orhow they would annunciate certainthings or what made them more

comortable - some wanted to be inthe dark, some wanted ull light. Idid all the music beore the shoot.

I started recording December5th and we started shootingJanuary 3rd.

There were rappers who cameon set and were like, Your voice

is dope, I want you to be on mysong! And I would go in to theirstudio and record with them and it

would be an entirely dierent styleo music. Ive done rockabilly tohardcore gangsta rap.

Ater the movie was done I was inthe studio re-recording all the songs,

because at that point I was so muchmore condent on the microphone.Ive been doing it ever since, so now

Ive been doing music or about ayear. Its about exercising it andbeing willing to trip and all and get

back up. Im now talking to labelsabout continuing to do music. Itsa newfound passion. Who knew I

would love to rap so much?

Filly Brown comes at an interesting

time or Latino cinema. Just likewith black cinema, which outside

Understanding both thesituations nancial and cultural

aspects, Gina is passionate aboutshiting the mentality. She oers,I think its a problem on both

sides. I think we the Latino

audience have done somethingthat has given Hollywood a ear.

We are 18% of the viewership, butwe dont watch our own movies.A Better Lie, which is about a

Mexican gardener - we all need togo see that! Its the same with RedTails. All black people, Latinos,

    and everybody should see that!

    Until we unite, Hollywoods not

going to look at it any dierently. And you cant look at Hollywoodand be like, Oh, thats just racist.

You wont pick up a Latinomovie because youre white. No, its money! They want a

movie thats gonna sell! Latinosneed to start watching Latinomovies so Hollywood can see we

actually have a hunger or it! Our

population is dying for this! Weredying to see color on the screen, to

see interracial relationships; weredying to see lie!

It takes eort on both ends. Ittakes Hollywood to take a riskand realize the world is hungry

or it, and it needs to be marketedcorrectly. My lm Go For It, a

hip-hop movie that happened tohave all brown people, didnt haveone billboard or commercial. Ipeople actually knew it existed,

it may have done better. Its acombination o so many things.

We need the world to unite andwatch these movies because itmatters! Red Tails, Filly Brown,

    they matter or our movement!

Theres a parting o the Red Seathat needs to happen where we see

our aces on blockbuster moviesbecause were good actors. Imnot the skinniest girl, Im not

the prettiest girl, but I can act

my arse o! Thats what I do likeits nobodys business! I can do

dramatic, I can do comedic; I wantto work with Woody Allen andQuentin Tarantino! I want to be

in Christopher Nolans next lm!I should have been in Inception! But weve got to get out there and

show the power on both ends. Its not just one persons ault.I we get Latinos to unite and

Hollywood to take a risk, I thinkboth ends would prot!

Concerning Filly Brownspecically, Gina continues,Its unny, one critic was like,

They dont even speak Spanish!Really? Do we have to? I grew up

in Chicago with English as myrst language. I wanted to wear

    Abercrombie & Fitch in highschool, and I wear J.Crew now!Filly Brown is a third-generation

Latino story about the kid who

grew up like anybody else. Its anormal story about chasing ater

your dreams and ghting or youramily, it just happens that itsdone by a bunch o brown people.

Its really important we get [thelm] out there because there are

a whole bunch o Latino kids - Iknow because I was one o them- who just want to see their story

on screen, where its not likeLa Rasta, and theres a fag, andtheres a rosary. I dont have those

anything to catapult more thanmy career, its that. I want to see

a change. I want little Latina girlsto know they dont have to getpregnant at 16 because thats not

    the reality anymore.

Lets be honest - TV and moviesand the Internet, thats educationnowadays. It sickens me, but letsbe real - when we were younger,

we did not have a cell phoneattached to our braid. I didnt geta cell phone until I was in college!

That needs to change, and it needsto be more refective o whatsgoing on in the world. I want to be

a role model or these little girls,

because when I was growing up Isure didnt have any.

Shes on the right path - on theloaded docket or Gina is not only

a yet-to-be-determined programon ABC (or which she hopes tond the right match where I get

to do something motivationaland encouraging and non-

stereotypical), but also severallms reuniting her with Michael

Olmos, Edward James Olmos -or, as she calls him, Eddie - and

her Filly Brown director YoussefDelara, respectively. Ever humble, she states, Theyre such brilliant

directors; that they want to workwith me again is such an honor.

For Delara, shell be starringalongside Dustin Homans sonMax in Snap. For Eddie andJoe Youngs grandson Bobby shell

get to sing in This Little SpanishTown (working title).

Perhaps most thrillingly, withMichael Olmos lm, The Girl,Gina will take on the lead as one o

the greatest types o characters a

movie can be about - a boxer. Thestory means a lot to me because

its her and her ather and theirrise to success together. My atheris a reeree or boxing; he was a

championship boxer. You hearme talk about him a lot, becausehes a huge motivation in my lie.

Hes my best riend. He made mewho I am. When I was younger he

would whisper in my ear when Iwas sleeping, You can be anythingyou want to be! And I would wakeup and be like, Dad! What are you

doing! Im in high school, youcant do this! And hed be like, Goback to sleep. Im talking to your

    subconscious, Im not talkingto you.

The Girl and Gina Rodriguezcoming together is an idealcoincidence, as the lm will tread

not only in to that history with herather but also her own past in thesquared circle. I started boxing

when I was about three. I was soexcited to show Michael thesepictures o me where the gloves

are as big as my whole body, andIm just trying to hold up my arms

because theyre so huge. And I get

to share that with him and showhim how much the story actually

means to me. My ather can bein the lm as well - he can be theone that trains me - so I eel really

blessed my ather and I will be ableto work together, doing what I loveand doing what he loves.

    No matter what happens, Gina

    wont soon orget Sundance. To

gi lkIm not the most ashion-orward

person. I dress like a little boy.I dress in bow ties and bigglasses. Im able to dress like

a little boy because I love Ted

Baker. Ted Baker rocks my world. Its never really cleavage and

short skirts, its always buttoned-up collared shirts and tuxedopants. I also love Madewell. Asmuch as they wont sponsor me,

they should! They dont sponsoranyone! I I could I would dresslike a Parisian and faunt around

    Europe in my awesome outts.

You just see one good movie ateranother. Its so encouraging, somotivating - you sit there and listen

to people speak at the panels andyoure just like, Im gonna leave, soI can go make a movie right now!

I want to be at Sundance next year

with my directorial debut, writtenand starred!

When asked if she feels the need

to pinch hersel, Gina gushes,Oh, my goodness, Im literallysqueezing my thigh right now!

Yes, yes, yes! Because you knowwhat? Every single day o my liehas been a success. I get to wake

up and do what I love, or at least

try! I think a lot o us orgetthat. Were like, Im not thereyet! I havent made it! I haventarrived! I dont want to arrive!

Its not about the end result. Idont want this to end! I dontneed it all to happen today. We

Starting the show at the meretween age of 14, Nathan says

he had never really given toomuch thought to his personalstyle. He hadnt been to any

red carpet events yet, and didnt particularlyknow what to wear; he just dressed like anaverage kid in tees and button-downs.

Being on iCarly caused me to gure outwhat I enjoyed wearing, Nathan says o his

    style decisions.

Nathan claims that his character, Freddie,

has had an infuence on what he wears, himsel. As an opposite eect, he tends to

stray rom the typical horizontal-stripedAbercrombie & Fitch polo shirts that were

selected or his wardrobe, and purposelytries not to wear them as a distinctionbetween his character and his own

individuality. Nathan nds this style to bevery specic to his character, and once evensaw a kid at a Halloween event dressed up

like Freddie with the classic striped shirt. Now, however, as the shows characters havematured, hes been able to grow out o it.

The look Nathan wears most oten thesedays is a long-sleeved button-down with

the sleeves rolled up (he hates when thesleeves are cued at his wrist), generally

    plaid but sometimes solid colors.

He enjoys wearing patterns becausehe eels a shirt is more versatile thatway, and can be combined with a

    graphic tee underneath.

    Typically Nathan will wear jeans

with the button-downs, andjokingly states he has come to

terms with wearing the now-trendytighter pants or guys rather than his

preerential loose boot-cuts. Hescome to like the trend and thinks itone o his better style upgrades.

I had to get used to wearing slimt recently because I noticed that

when photos are taken, it justdoesnt look good.

Not only does Nathan get to wear allthe mature Freddies clothing, he alsohas very cool stylists on the show who

know his body type and the clothesthat t him best. This team has helpedguide his ashion sensibility.

He also has two teenage co-stars whohave a similar eect to that o the

stylists. He says they dont necessarilygive him any particular advice, buti he came in wearing something

stupid they wouldnt hesitate totell him. He very much appreciateshaving some perspectives rom peers

    closer in age.

Growing up - not to mention going

through puberty - on the show,

demonstrates a lot o change inNathans life and in his style. Whenasked how it elt to go rom picked

on to crushed on, and Nathan sayswhen the show rst started healways hoped his character would

undergo some sort o change, andit denitely did! When he nally

started getting older his styleollowed the course o nature, going

rom layered sweatshirts to tighter, more orm-tting tees.

Considering his new spot as oneo the top male heartthrobs, thequestion arises as to whether

Nathans heavily emale an basehas any infuence on what he wears.Nathan says it does have a little bit

o infuence, and that while hes notparticularly in tune with what girlslike guys to wear he does get positive

eedback on his and his charactersrespective styles.

I wish I could just have a checkliston what girls like guys to weargirls are all dierent, some like guys

who wear skinny jeans, and somelike guys who dont. I just wish theyall didnt like skinny jeans, because I

    dont like them, Nathan jokes.

As hes had to attend more and more

ormal events and award shows,Nathans style has transormed intowhat he calls a balance between

younger and older; he doesnt like

dressing like a kid and wants to beseen as an adult, yet he wants tolook age-appropriate. His personal

avorite wardrobe piece or anythingancy is a vest, and he has worn themor the past three Nickelodeon Kids

Choice Awards. For these events hesa big an o classier looks, and says i

he could choose a label he wanted towear hed pick Armani or Ted Baker,

and that he usually wears a lot oHugo Boss.

I try to remind people that Imbecoming a man, so I try to dressmysel in more o a proessional way.

As or that head o hair, Nathan saysit has undergone several evolutions

over the past two years. He says hisrst hairstyle was his biggest mistake;he had the whole top o his head in

some sort o spiked aro that madeit look gigantic. From there he wentwith the ront fip, which then became

more o a lited comb-over look, butthat was only because he was tryingto grow his hair out and that was the

only style that worked with the longhair. He then decided to cut it shortand spike it out in the ront. Recently,

at the Australian Kids Choice Awards, his stylist told him she wanted to trysomething dierent. She cut his hair

and used a bunch o products hehad never seen beore, and when henally got to see it, he liked it a lot.

So now hes combined the last two

styles in a sort o combed-over andpieced look he says is an extensiono the combination younger and

    older look.

    Now graduating over rom

television to movies, Nathanimparted that his recent characterin the lm Game o Your Lie was

very interesting to play because itinvolved a style he wasnt used toat all. His character, Phillip, is a

video gamer who wears nothingbut black - a color that proved

quite uncomortable in the hotAtlanta summer weather in whichthe movie was lmed. He was, however, very excited when he got

to wear a black vest in one o thenal scenes. He admits the styletook some getting used to but it

was neat being involved in such adierent project.

As hes been getting older,Nickelodeon has been aging upNathans wardrobe, and those

Australian Kids Choice Awardshave had the most major aecton his style thus ar. Nathan says

he was styled with with jackets, and one he liked a lot was agrey trench coat rom H&M

that he elt dressed up anythingunderneath it. He said that awardshow aected him signiicantly,

because it was the irst time theyreally tried to age him up. On thered carpets he would be styled

with nice jeans, a button-downand a nice blazer, which was theoldest hes ever looked. He now

wears a lot o jackets, and usuallycarries one around in his carjust in case the warm Caliornia

weather takes a turn and gives

    him an excuse.

When it comes to letting his

extensive emale an base knowhis take on emale styles, hesaid hes not incredibly picky

and respects a girl who iscomortable enough towear a shirt and jeans and

shoes - one who doesnthave to hide behind anyancy clothes or labels

unless at a ancy event.Quickly remembering

hes talking to aashion magazine, hecharmingly adds thathe has nothing against

skirts and dresses, andalso likes the girly typestu too. As with many

guys, he also preers lessmakeup and simplerlooks, noting that less is

    always more.

    As his exciting career progresses,

Nathan attests that its all withplenty o help and motivationrom his an base. He loves his

ans and his whole experiencewith iCarly would becompletely dierent without

their support. He also says thatthanks to Twitter, its really easyto have a personal connection

with ans because its so easyto update, and he likes thatpeople can eel closer to him

and whats going on in hislie. He said he made a Twitteraccount at rst to simply stay

connected and ollow people, and he now has about hal amillion ollowers.

ull o wit, charm, andbeauty, Ashley Hinshawgives a glimpse into her

    exciting and ast-moving

lie while being preppedfor her Icon cover shoot. From

childhood dreams to dreams cometrue, her journey has been somethingyoud expect to see in a movie.

Ashley says she always wanted tobe an actress while growing up in

Indiana, and laughingly admitsshed always get animal roles suchas Toto and a bird in Alice in

Wonderland. She even played a tree, but that never discouraged her. Shewanted to move to Los Angeles ater

high school to be discovered, andas ate would have it, a well-knownNew York ashion photographer

Bruce Weber discovered her, leadingAshley to Abercrombie & Fitch andHollister ads.

Ashleys modeling career excelledrapidly, landing her in shoots all over

the world. She even had an apartmentin Paris because she was back andorth between there and New York so

much. Its crazy; starting in JanuaryI had never let the United States, andby June I had been all over the world,

    she observes.

During her modeling career, Ashleyadmits that she was a lot more stylishin New York compared to the morelaid back vibe o Los Angeles. She

used to wear a lot o black in NewYork and Paris, but in Los Angelesshe loves to perk up an outt with

color. She likes looks such as Odelin,Parker, Ir Le Vigne and AlexanderWang, which she nds simple with a

twist. Ashley also likes clothing thatcan be reinvented - clothing thats

    versatile and comortable.

Ashleys staple shoe is a suede boot,

and her avorite boot designer isElizabeth & James. In Los Angeles,Ashley rocks Converse, and says she

is denitely not a an o fip-fops.At the shoot Ashley wears a pair oworn fat leather boots she got rom

a movie she was in, keeping thembecause she liked them so much.

In her makeup bag you wouldnd Mac eye shadows, especiallyin natural neutral colors or a light

purple. Shes also big on mascara, especially since she has blondeeyelashes, and loves her mascara

by Dior. Recently shes been gettinginto red lips, and admits that youdenitely have to have the right

mentality to wear it. She recounts,I remember I wore red lips to theTeen Vogue party and was nervous

at rst; you denitely have to bebold to wear it.

As or those perect blonde locks,Ashley says the hairstyles shestrending toward now are the low

ponytail, the sh tail, and the lowbraid, though she likes to changethings up. She once dyed her hair

    red and loved it!

    Ashley says she loves modeling

but wanted to act more thananything, and apparently

    destiny agreed. She ell

upon a manager while inNew York who sent herto her very rst audition

for a spot on the hit CW show,Gossip Girl.

It was so exciting, but I didntthink I was going to get the part

so I few back to Los Angeles, ando course as soon as my phonegot service when I landed I had

a voicemail rom my managertelling me not to leave New Yorkand that I had gotten the part. I

    turned right back around.

Playing hersel as a model as well

as the notorious Chuck Bass loveinterest in the episode, Ashley recallsthe cast being very riendly. It being

her rst major gig, Ashley admitsto never having been around actorsbeore but being very impressed by

everyones sincerity. This was alsoher rst time having a trailer. Sheplayully conesses to going camera

crazy because she was so thrilled

    about it.

Immediately ater lming GossipGirl, Ashley booked her second gigon Fringe. Everything happened

so quickly, and in January of 2010she moved to Los Angeles with noconnections. She says that even

though initially she would lose partsto bigger names, she was overlyrealistic, living in the moment, and

    extremely appreciative.

Not being well known yet proved

to have a bright side when itlanded Ashley a role in theupcoming movie LOL eaturing

Miley Cyrus. Ashley says theywere looking or someone lesserknown to play Mileys characters

    best riend. Ashley says working

with Miley or her rst big jobwas amazing yet intimidating,

but that the star wasvery down to Earth andwelcoming.

Two weeks ater nishinglming or LOL, Ashley

was in South Aricalming the 21st CenturyFox movie Chronicle.

She claims it wasprobably her avorite tolm because o the great

location and cast. Themovie ollows three boys whoaccidentally obtain superpowers,

using them or un at rst buteventually nding themselvesin a whirlwind o predicaments.

    Chronicle hit theaters February3rd.

    Next Ashley ilmed the movie

Cherry, set to debut in Marchand starring James Franco and

Heather Graham. She plays anestranged prostitute, which shedescribes as interesting because

it was the role urthest romher and a great opportunityto take a journey away rom

hersel. Privy to my prying orjuicy details about getting tomake out with James Franco on

screen, she laughed and told mehes a great actor who gets veryinto his character.

As her dream o acting rapidly turnsinto an amazing reality, Ashley is so

busy with acting that now that sheonly models as an actress, whichshe likes because now shes not just

    a clothes hanger.

In her downtime, Ashley enjoyshanging out in Santa Barbara. Shes

big on antiquing and collectingweird things no one needs. One oher specic hobbies is collecting

antique picture rames in which shedisplays artwork her ten-year-oldgoddaughter sends by mail.

Ater such an amazing year, Ashleyis excited and ready or her career as

an actress, and shows truly genuineappreciation and gratitude orall o the opportunities that have

    presented themselves to her.
