While Memorial Day is a day to honor those who died while serving our nation by remembering the

sacrifice they made, Veterans Day pays tribute to all veterans, both living and deceased. Public observances vary from small town parades with local veterans riding on floats to an official wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.

Although most Americans are aware that the Tomb of the Unknowns is a monument dedicated to unknown soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending America in World War I, War II and the Korean War, most Americans do not know the degree to which soldiers go to honor these veterans. Since 1948, soldiers have guarded the Tomb of the Unknowns 24 hours a day, 365 days a year regardless of weather.

The soldiers bravely remain at their posts, just as they stayed on duty during Hurricanes Isabel and Irene as well as the 2010 blizzard

which shut down the capital for days. Tomb Sentinels have the option of standing their watch over America’s fallen heroes under a tent when it rains, but they have consistently declined to do so.

Fewer than 20 percent of all volunteers are accepted for training and of those only a fraction pass training to become full-fledged Tomb Guards. Considered one of the highest honors to serve as a Sentinel at Arlington Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknowns, this inspirational picture is a reminder of the service soldiers provide and displays the true honor, courage and commitment of the United States Military. The Guards of Honor at the Tomb of the Unknowns are highly motivated and proud to honor all American service members who are “Known But to God.”

On this Veterans Day, we would like to thank all the men and women who bravely served and sacrificed for the freedoms we have today. We are proud to honor you.

GOING COASTALI was born in Springfield, IL and grew up in Westfield Center, OH. I grew up running and playing soccer, being a kid and I have great memories of swim meets, playing outside and never wanting to be indoors. Not much has changed! I served in the USCG for 6 years in D17 Alaska. Our primary mission was to serve and safeguard the public, protect the environment and its resources, and defend the Nation’s interests in the Alaskan maritime region. As a rescue swimmer, my primary duties were saving lives, providing emergency medical support, and maintaining the survival equipment our rescue missions depended on in emergencies. I learned the value of being a team player.

We performed numerous search and rescue missions throughout Southeast Alaska and the surrounding islands. I currently reside in Longmont, Colorado, about 30 minutes North of Denver and enjoy time spent doing church related activities, family and volunteering in my local community. I also enjoy skiing and hiking in the Rockies. I am excited about the future of Icon and look forward to many years of service ahead. I wanted to share a quote I like, “I wish I was half the man, my dog thinks I am.” God Bless!

Who am I? My name is Jeff Stahl and I serve as an outside AE in Colorado, as part of the Western Region.

FROM BOY SCOUT TO POLICEMAN I was born in Torrance, California and grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles near Gardena. I was a Boy Scout and athlete who loved and played baseball. I had professional aspirations and played up to my first year of college. I had the pleasure of competing against and knowing some baseball players who eventually became stars in the Major Leagues.

I worked while attending college full time and completed my degree in four years, without a student loan. Believe it or not, I was drafted into the US Army after college and I served honorably for two years as a Military Policeman. I spent eighteen months in Stuttgart, West

Germany. I loved my job and was able to work and attend the Munich Olympics and travel Europe. I was also a member of the Honor Guard.

My beautiful wife, Sharon, and I have two children, Tracy and Matthew. We have been blessed with three grandchildren; Kevin, Syriah and Shamari. Family is important to me so Thanksgiving and Christmas are special. Usually we have the family gathering at our home during the Holidays where we all have a great time.

I love the outdoors where I like to hunt and fish. I love sports and I am an avid Lakers fan. I have three dogs that keep me and my wife busy.

I have been in this business for many years and I am still passionate about what I do. Working at Icon is like a family because everyone has been so nice and helpful to me. I can truly say that I learn something new every day and build on that knowledge.

Who am I? My name is Curtis Hawley and I work in the Dynamic Underwriting Department.

What better way to strengthen the Icon & Ovation community than coming together to host our annual food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank? Food drives foster a sense of teamwork by creating an opportunity to work together toward a common, worthy goal. Since its founding, Second Harvest has provided more than 272 million pounds of donated and surplus food to local charities.

It is currently estimated that 615,000 Orange County residents are at risk of going to bed hungry some time during the month. The majority of people at risk of going hungry each month are children and single-parents, seniors on fixed incomes, the working poor and other men and women confronted by financial difficulty or who are physically unable to earn a living. Children make up 38% of that number, many of whom see their only meal at a free or reduced lunch program. Another 10% represent our seniors on fixed incomes, having to make the decision whether to pay for the prescriptions they desperately need, pay the rent, or buy groceries.

Second Harvest Food Bank provides meals to nearly 220,000 individuals each and every month. Let’s all be a part of the Icon & Ovation community of helpers and donate to Second Harvest Food Bank during our annual food drive. Donation canisters will be here starting November 5th through November 15th. The donation canisters will be in the kitchen areas on the first floor.

September marks the fifth straight month of job growth in the mortgage industry, which has seen its head count increase 8.8% over the prior 12 months.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that employment in the mortgage banking and brokerage sector rose to 285,000 positions in September from 281,300 in August. (The residential finance figures lag the national ones by a month.)

Since January, lenders have hired 22,900 new employees to keep up with the demand for refinancings. Mortgage brokerages are responsible for 12,100 of the new hires.

Meanwhile, Friday’s jobs report shows the U.S. economy created 171,000 new jobs in October, compared to 148,000 in September. The September figure was revised upward by 34,000 jobs.

The national unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% in October from 7.8% in September.

Mortgage-backed securities trading handled the issues caused by Hurricane Sandy without any major disruptions. Stronger than expected economic data also had little impact, and mortgage rates ended the week with little change.

Friday’s Employment report showed that the economy added roughly twice as many jobs as expected (including revisions). Against a consensus forecast of 125K, the economy added 171K jobs in October, and the data from prior months was revised higher by 84K. The Unemployment Rate increased to 7.9% from 7.8% last month, as expected, due to an increase in the size of the labor force (see below). Overall, this report was encouraging in most areas. Of note, the collection period for the October data ended before Hurricane Sandy hit, so next month’s report will reflect the storm’s impact.

The Unemployment Rate is determined in a separate survey and is based on two factors, the number of jobs and the number of people in the labor force. According to this survey, the economy added a whopping 410K jobs, and the labor force increased by an even larger 578K people. Clearly, strong growth in the number of jobs is great news for the economy. A growing labor force is also positive for the economy, and it reflects increased optimism about finding a job, but it leads to a higher percentage of people classified as unemployed.
