C. How Play and Humor Help Us Innovate GRAND CANYON 13 This talk will discuss connections between creativity, prolific idea generation, humor and play. Specifically, humor and creativity both involve making non-obvious connections between seemingly unrelated things. It was found that improvisational comedians produced more creative product ideas than professional product designers in controlled, time-limited idea generation challenges, and that engineers can generate significantly more ideas after improvisational training.

Researchers have also found that a playful attitude is helpful in creative problem solving and ideation. It seems obvious to promote play for children, but we tend to discourage it in adults. If we want to be creative leaders and designers, we should encourage play and humor in both work and academia. Speaker:

Prof. Barry Kudrowitz University of Minnesota College of Design Minneapolis, MN

3:00 – 4:00 pm Keynote Presentation GRAND CANYON 8 "Innovation in Sustainability...Leading Edge Ideas" A key driver to Sustainability is Innovation, which has fuelled the recent rise in Sustainability consciousness over the past several years and will continue to do so for many years to come. In fact, some of the innovation coming from this Sustainability era that we are actively participating in, will leave a lasting legacy on our history. Future generations will look back on these innovations and will compare them to advancements in other eras- such breakthroughs as the use of iron to strengthen tools and weapons for the Iron Age, the steam engine for the Industrial Revolution, and the 30 year mortgage- which fueled the housing boom of the Post World War II era. This session brings together three speakers from three different industry leading companies that will have a large impact on our society today and potentially alter the future forever. Moderator:

Marcel Proskow President Maxam Design International Calgary, AB

Speakers:

Phil Ovitt Manager, Business Development and Policy NRG Energy EV Services

Josh Richman VP of Business Development Bloom Energy

Bloom Energy is changing the way the world generates and consumes energy, using the famous “Bloom Box”. The Bloom Box is the distributed-generation superstar of data centers and supermarkets and will one day could be used more universally in all building types.

John Geyer Vice President, Development Ygrene

Ygrene is a leader in PACE financing, which allows companies, districts, and contractors to create clean energy districts that help provide the capital required to purchase cleaner energy innovations, even in this unstable economy.

As our attitude toward the current economy is the only condition we truly have the power to change, we need to begin by rebuilding a positive and pro-active outlook and the value of our profession in helping to bring about the future we all want to see for our firms, our industries, our professions and our communities. Through collaborative discussions, the Architects Special Interest Group will highlight strategies to regain our "groove" in marshaling our potential to restore our domains of practice and create opportunities for today's profession and those for the next generation. In this session, the panel will introduce ten (10) strategic themes with some thoughts to stimulate initial discussion. During the course of the program these themes will be explored through an assignment of one theme to each of ten (10) roundtables. VICTORIA GARTEN, LC, LEED AP, Global and Strategic Accounts Manager, GE Lighting. Vicki Garten has been assisting major global retailers for the last 13 years in slashing their lighting maintenance and energy costs—helping over 50 retailers with a combined savings of $100 million annually! She began this journey as the GE Lighting Commercialization Leader for GE’s industry changing 30 watt T8 lamp and UltraMax ballast. Her goal was to convince end users to cut 2 watts when the industry was still selling more T12’s than T8s. The industry that was most receptive to Vicki & GE’s message was the retail industry, with industry leaders such as Walmart, Target & Walgreens recognizing the millions of dollar savings from just 2 watts. Building on this success, Vicki worked at the T5 Product Leader & was at the forefront in working with retailers to convert their warehouses from HID to T5/T8. Key early adopter partners were Food Lion & Kroger. From “traditional lighting”, Vicki & GE began working 8 years ago to convert retail refrigeration case lighting from fluorescent to LED with Walmart & Target again being our key developmental partners. This innovation now has global impact; small convenience stores in Brazil now light their cases with LED. LED case doors that were originally lit with 22 LEDs now only need 7 LEDs to do the same job & operate at a third of the watts! Vicki’s next assignment was LED Exterior Lighting with early adopters being Walmart Puerto Rico who found that not only could they slash >60% energy but enhance security. Over a 3 year time period she has helped support the conversion of more than 350 lots to LED, helping retailers set this new standard. Currently Vicki is supporting over 25 global retailers & property developers achieve the full impact of GE’s broad lighting portfolio as they investigate how to maximize their profitability and how to effectively use LED in their interior spaces.
