Editor’s letterWelcome to ICT for Education’s Brighton conference, one of nine events in this year’s national conference programme and one that I hope will inform, inspire and enterta in you.

The conference programme includes a great l ine-up of speakers who will address pressing ICT issues on the agenda at primary and secondary schools in and around Brighton. Near the top of the agenda at many schools is the new computing curriculum. Adam Martin , a Java programming teacher at Blatchington Mill School , will look at the coding element of the computing curriculum and will also take part in the conference debate, which will question how the computing curriculum can best be taught and whether it will meet the needs of students , business and industry.

Our guest speaker today is Andy Hutt , an educational ICT consultant who will present an informative and enterta ining session exploring some of the free and low-cost ICT tools and resources that should give you reasons to be cheerful . Andy is joined by school ICT practitioners who will discuss their work in developing ICT in education.

Then there is ICT Reviews Live!, an independent product review session that will put products to the test in a l ive environment and give you real

insight into their capabil it ies. We are also hosting a session on networks , which will provide top tips on how to improve internet performance for tablet schemes in school . And don’t miss the exhibition hall where you will f ind plenty of suppl iers demonstrating their latest ICT products and services.

The refreshments are on us today, so do take a break and have a chat with colleagues , speakers and suppl iers. Some members of the ICT for Education team are at the conference and would be pleased to hear your views on the issues posed by ICT in education. Our mission is to tackle the issues you face, so we will pick up your views and pursue them at conferences and on our website, a unique source of information , comment and creative thinking on the best use of ICT in schools.

I hope this brochure will help you navigate the conference and maximise your time with us. Have a great day and I look forward to meeting you.

Best Regards,

Stand 26 — EXA Education

Exa are the only Education focused ISP in the UK today; we do not have a home user division to split our focus or sell school furniture, laptops or mobile phones or simply resell another ISP’s broadband service; we simply focus on being the best that we can be, doing what we do, an Education focused Internet Service Provider.

As a pioneer in the field of internet connectivity and content filtering to schools in the UK; Exa Networks has grown to become one of the largest independent providers to educational organisations in the UK - enabling us to bring you a wealth of knowledge and a range of services second to none. We now look after over 10% of the UK’s educational organisations, providing services such as internet connectivity with our content filtering system, SurfProtect (included at no extra charge), to email services such as PupilMail with key word filtering, web site hosting and so much more.

Schools stay with us - not because we tie them into long-term contracts like other providers - but because we deliver on our promises.

To find out why Exa has won awards such as Best Broadband Provider and Best Customer Service at the ISPA’s (and been nominated for eight consecutive years) and how we can help your school and save you thousands of pounds every year visit our stand or call us today

Stand 27 — Earwig Academic

Teaching staff are under ever-increasing pressure to provide more teaching evidence and to have it ready at a moment’s notice. The Earwig software package provides schools with an app which enables teachers and students to capture moments in the classroom and outside, using photos, video and documents, and allocate these easily and quickly to pupils and subjects. These are then presented as a timeline for every child, class, subject, key stage or teacher, at the click of a mouse. So Earwig schools are permanently Ofsted-ready.

The Earwig timelines also provide each pupil with a unique and permanent record of their school career and, when shared with parents, improve parental engagement and pupil motivation further.

Parents can buy the photos and video online, which provides the school with additional income. The same package enables schools to turn the vivid records created into a school blog and diary. The Earwig EYFS Module enables Early Years teachers to stay on top of the very high reporting demands placed on them, without any extra work.

Earwig is a closed system, so images of children are protected.

Stand 29 — DoodleMaths

DoodleMaths: a personalised learning system for maths, unique in that it constructs an ongoing study program based on a user’s individual strengths and weaknesses. It is the top-grossing maths app in the UK App Store. If your school has iPads, you need to take a closer look at DoodleMaths.

Every child completes an initial assessment, from which DoodleMaths creates a bespoke program of study. DoodleMaths reinforces previously learnt concepts and introduces new concepts at the right time for each individual student, ensuring a sufficiently challenging and motivating experience. Children use DoodleMaths for a few minutes daily.

Teachers benefit from the DoodleMaths website which allows them to track progress, send encouraging messages of support, and view ‘real time’ exactly what each child in their class is doing. It even alerts the teacher if a child is stuck or inactive!

Children love using DoodleMaths: it fits easily into the daily routine, it’s quick to get started, and can even be used with no internet connection. The motivational aspects are popular with learners, too: every user chooses a pet avatar, and correct answers bring the reward of DoodleStars which can be spent on pet accessories. And vitally, children enjoy it because it is pitched exactly at their level: it understands them, and balances challenge with success to ensure the individual is always progressing.

DoodleMaths is simple to set up for your staff and students. Talk to us and our support team will have you up-and-running in no time.
