Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing

•Collaboration for idea generation, product development, product testing, marketing to speed up processes and engage with clients

•Collaboration within a companyas well as with outside experts, partner companies and „thecrowd“

What happens?Openmoko is a project funded by FIC (Taiwan) to create a smartphoneplatform which follows the open source software philosophy. FIC'sOpenMoko phones are designed to provide end users with the ability to modify the operating system and software stack.

Juice producer Calpis collaborated with users of popular social network Mixi (both Japan) to create a new juice flavor.

InnoCentive is a leading “Open innovation" platform where companies like Procter & Gamble post challenges to interested researchers, who win up to 100.000 for successful solutions.

Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing

Enterprise spending on Web 2.0 technologies will grow strongly over the next five years, reaching $4.6 billion globally by 2013 –Forrester Research, April 2008

Opportunities for ICT•Software for networking: platforms, widgets, market places…

•Software for analyzing: text mining the blogosphere, rating tools, measurement of networking effectiveness…

•Security and authentication, prevention of „identity theft“

•More partnering opportunities for SMEs as (temporary) solutionproviders

Ntag (U.S.) provides real time event managementservices that allow e.g. to measure number of interactions or how manybusiness cards have beenexchanged. Used e.g. byLucent, Mastercard

Trampoline Systems (UK) enables companies to visualize the network within an enterprise based on email data: Who are the communication brokers and gatekeepers?

Open Innovation and CrowdsourcingHot Spots*

Trend settingFollowing Fast

American ConsumerGoods companiesarguably were the first to replace the „notinvented here“ mindsetwith a „proudly foundelsewhere“ attitude. Bynow, success stories of co-creation can be spotted everywhere. The same goes for solution providers, withSilicon Valley as theepi-center.

Reality Sensing

What happens?•Existing data is analyzed in new ways for measuring and predicting events almost in real-time

•Analyzing traffic jams based on movements of mobile phones, sensing life signals of elderly ormeasuring networking at events isalready happening

•Drivers for development currentlysecurity and risk management(e.g. through early recognition of unusual behavior)

Google Flu Trends uses aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity in U.S. states

SK Telecom (South Korea) offers a service for fishermen: Using a float-shaped ultrasonic transmitter that is connected to a cell phone on one end and a fishing line on the other, the device transmits the position of fish to the cell-phone.

TomTom's HD Traffic series uses mobile phones of drivers inching through traffic jams to sense congestion.

Human Interface

What happens?•Technology is coming closer and closer to human beings: Robotscan understand and express emotions, search engines begin to understand natural language, sensors detect brain waves in order to steer a wheelchair

•Health, security and entertainment as main drivers

Emotiv’s (U.S.) wireless headset detects brain waves, facial expressions, body language, and movement – in combination they are used to control computer functions (e.g. in games)

Noir, a “grandchild” robot designed to communicate with and help take care of the elderly is one example among a growing herd of robots that can not only interact but also detect and express emotions. (Japan)

Powerset (U.S.) is a semantic search engine (acquired by Microsoft in 2008). It understands English questions and currently uses Wikipedia to find answers

Human Interface

Opportunities for ICT•Create better human-machine interfaces

•New application areas in healthcare, machine control, workplacesecurity, national security, consumer research,…

Finnish brain researcher developed a device that can steer a wheelchair based on the brainwaves.

The Department of Homeland Security's (U.S.) is researching a system that uses a battery of sensors to remotely checks people's pulse rate, breathing patterns, skin temperature and momentary facial expressions to determine if people have any mal-intent.

Not just for humans: Researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Animal Health developed a method for identifying cattle infected with mad cow disease, simply by measuring brain waves produced in response to audio stimuli.

Appealing Design

Opportunities for ICT•partnering with designers and end-users early on in productdevelopment

•Instructions and installation for products need to be simple and accessible

•Knowing about usability, consumer preferences is a Must –

“xx.“Samsung Lavender” concept cell phone not only looks like a perfume bottle, it also dispenses lavender aroma. The display shows how much perfume is still left, perfume can be refilled.

Alcatel-Lucent Lab uses a hand-picked global community of pre-teensand teens to understandhow they use all sorts of screens

•Consumers are not interested in technology but in design and user experience

•Drivers of the trend are the new Very Important Target groups: Generation Y, Women, Seniors

What happens?

Productivity Protection

What happens?•In a knowledge economy, a company’s success hinges on the creativity and productivity of its employees

•Lack of motivation as well as sickleave (due physical/psychologicalstress) recognized as an attack on a company‘s assets

•With demographic change, talent becomes a limited source -companies need to make the most out of their existing employees talents

•Companies that protect theenergy of employees are moreattractive as employers

Nearly half of U.S. employers (48 %) say stress caused by working long hours is affecting business performance.– Watson Wyatt, Feb 2008

At Google‘s European engineering HQ in Switzerland, design plays a crucial role to let creative juices flow

MetroNaps (US) enhances workforce productivity through mid-day napping equipment and education.
