For some people, innovating comes as naturally as breathing. Never has that been truer than with legendary physician-inventor Dr. Forrest Bird, the inventor of the first highly reliable, low-cost, mass-produced respirator in the world. Known as the Father of the Respiratory Industry, Bird pioneered key advances in the medical field that have saved millions of lives worldwide.

Because of the worldwide impact of his inventions, Bird has received prestigious honors for innovation, including the Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award and being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In 2008, Bird also received the Presidential

Citizens Medal from President George W. Bush, which is the second highest civilian award in the United States. In 2009, Bird received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barrack Obama, which is the nation’s highest honor for technological achievement. But despite these impressive achievements, Bird retains a remarkable sense of

humility and strong desire to use his knowledge to benefit the next generation of inventors.

Bird was born in Stoughton, Massachusetts. Growing up, he had the chance to meet two famous innovators that impacted the course of his life, Henry Ford and Orville Wright. Henry Ford often attended his father’s annual clam bakes and observed Bird’s efforts in repairing his neighbor’s tractors using Ford parts. Bird said that Ford’s desire to constantly innovate new solutions was a lesson he carried into his adult life.

Bird’s father, a World War I pilot, introduced his son to Orville Wright. Bird remembers saying at the time that he didn’t believe he could ever measure up to the man responsible for making mechanical flight a reality. How could he have known then that someday, in his own way, he would make just as much of a global impact as his hero Orville Wright?

Dr. Forrest BirdPioneering Physician-Inventorby Malcolm Hong, ITC Project Manager

In part because of his meeting with Orville Wright, Bird became a pilot at an early age and the lessons he learned from aviation helped inspire his greatest inventions. At the age of 14, Bird took his first solo flight. When he entered the Army Air Corps at the age of 21, he had 2,800 hours of flight time, which was remarkable considering that the average enlistee joined with 150 hours of flight time.

During World War II, Bird delivered aircraft from factories to the front lines and realized the similarities between air flowing over a plane’s wings and air flowing through a human lung. Although it seems a simple concept, because of the complexity of the human lung, Bird needed specialized training to launch his ideas. The military sent Bird to medical school, where he gained the education needed to take his ideas from concepts into viable products.

One of the inventions Bird pioneered during his career in the military was the pressure suit regulator, which played a critical role during the war effort. At the time of the war, planes were capable of flying to higher altitudes than a pilot could withstand. Bird recognized how he could apply his studies in developing a solution for this physiological limitation.

After building a successful prototype, Bird’s pressure suit regulator device was mass produced for the military within months. Because of this invention, America and its allies gained a tactical advantage over their enemies. Implementing this technology allowed Allied pilots to fly higher than their enemies and gain an advantage in aerial dogfights by withstanding greater g-forces through their specialized

Building on the success of the Bird Mark 7 respirator, Bird created a ventilator specially designed for infants, nicknamed the “Babybird.” This remarkable device was responsible for reducing infant mortality caused by respirator problems from 70% to less than 10%.

equipment. The success of Bird’s pressure suit regulator set the stage for Bird’s breakthrough in the medical industry—the Bird Mark 7 respirator, the first highly reliable, low-cost, mass-produced respirator in the world.

At the time Bird was developing his device, people with respiratory problems had few options. The most serious patients were forced to use devices known as iron lungs, which were bulky, primitive, and expensive. During the 1930’s, the cost of an iron lung was the same as the average price of a home. Bird believed there was a better solution and doggedly pursued his vision of creating a small, affordable device that could automatically help people breathe.

After attending medical school and completing his residencies in 1955, Bird tested his prototype respirator by traveling to medical schools and treating the most seriously ill patients where known therapies had failed. Although Bird’s early device wasn’t always successful, each trial case allowed him to improve upon his original design. Because of Bird’s innovative genius and persistence, he was able to successfully introduce his Bird Mark 7 respirator in the late 1950’s. The device was so effective that the Air Force actually produced a training film about it, complete with a Hollywood score.

For the next few years, Bird traveled around the world training medical personnel in using his new invention. Bird flew a specially

modified plane that allowed him greater accessibility to visit remote locations and was a tireless advocate in helping the medical industry see the value of the Bird Mark 7 respirator. Following World War II, Bird had delegations of medical personnel from other countries visit his clinic to receive specialized training.

Although some doctors were initially skeptical about Bird’s bold new invention, over time, the respirator became standard use throughout the entire world.

Building on the success of the Bird Mark 7 respirator, Bird created a ventilator specially designed for infants, nicknamed the “Babybird.” This remarkable device was responsible for reducing infant mortality caused by respirator problems from 70% to less than 10%. To this day, Bird still receives unsolicited letters from parents whose children have been saved through his respirator devices.

The success of Bird’s invention also paved the way to develop a

critical advancement in treating wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Before Bird’s respirator devices, the military had no way to treat critically injured soldiers who needed respiratory care in transit, because the available equipment was far too large and bulky to include in an aircraft. After Bird pioneered his small, affordable respirator device, it became standard procedure to include this equipment in medivac aircraft. This became a lifesaving measure responsible for sharply reducing the fatality rate of wounded soldiers who needed respiratory care.

To this day, Bird still actively innovates and develops new solutions to pressing medical problems. Bird holds numerous patents and is the founder of Percussionarie Corporation located in Sandpoint, Idaho, where he has lived for more than 40 years. Bird oversees a staff of 50 and spends his days writing, lecturing, and innovating. Although Bird often travels the world to lend his expertise, he will always consider Idaho his home. Some of the recent challenges Bird has worked on include developing solutions to care for patients with chronic lung disease, such as Cystic Fibrosis.

Bird and his wife Pamela are the owners of the Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center in Sagle, Idaho, alongside stunning Lake Pend Oreille, where a team of more than 60 volunteers educates visitors about aviators and innovators who helped create modern technology. His business also plays an instrumental part in hosting their region’s annual Camp Invention, a national program intended to foster creativity and problem solving skills in young students. This program also gives students the chance to meet top inventors and innovators in their own backyard. Bird makes himself accessible to students and prospective inventors and is always willing to share lessons learned with the next generation of young innovators.

When asked about the lessons he learned as an inventor, Bird emphasizes following your passions and having the personal tenacity needed to take a project to its completion. Ultimately, Bird encourages inventors to have the courage to pursue new ideas, because after all, as he put it, “Orville Wright never had a pilot’s license.”

Bird remembers saying at the time that he didn’t believe he could ever measure up to the man responsible for making mechanical flight a reality. How could he have known then that someday, in his own way, he would make just as much of a global impact as his hero Orville Wright?

ProClarity Corp. was founded, existing business intelligence solutions were primarily developed and used by IT professionals. Lokken’s team recognized the value of creating a new way to analyze and present information that was easily understood by business leaders. Their end goal was to empower business leaders to answer their own questions, rather than turning to IT professionals to run convoluted and lengthy reports.

ProClarity’s new approach to software analytics was well received by the industry. To date, ProClarity Corp. has won more than 40 industry awards for analytic and performance management technologies. Because of ProClarity’s success, the company attracted the attention of industry giant Microsoft, who partnered with ProClarity for years before approaching it with an acquisition offer. Lokken was open to negotiations—but the deal-breaker was under the condition that Microsoft merge ProClarity’s employees into their organization and keep the company headquarters located in Boise. Microsoft agreed to Lokken’s terms and today, the business intelligence software created by Lokken’s team are some of the key features of Microsoft Business Intelligence platform.

After the acquisition, Bob Lokken worked as Microsoft’s Senior Director of Business Intelligence Product Management Group. For a few years, Lokken played a critical role in helping Microsoft deploy ProClarity’s technologies as part of an integrated, strategic asset within the company. While Lokken worked for Microsoft, he saw new opportunities on the horizon. Ever the quintessential entrepreneur, Lokken left Microsoft to pursue an opportunity that he developed into a new software company—WhiteCloud Analytics.

Similar to ProClarity Corp., WhiteCloud Analytics was developed to provide intuitive, streamlined business intelligence solutions. Unlike ProClarity, WhiteCloud Analytics’ purpose was to specifically provide decision support and performance management for healthcare systems, a very specific industry that Lokken was already familiar with. Some of ProClarity’s best success stories were from the healthcare industry—in fact, the largest ProClarity customer was the

Jeff Rutherford, Chief Operating Officer of WhiteCloud Analytics, has always remembered what Bob Lokken told him about lessons business leaders could learn from Ferdinand Magellan’s first circumnavigation around the world. It was a conversation that Rutherford found meaningful, since it applied to how their company was implementing bold new ideas into the marketplace.

In some ways similar to Magellan, Bob Lokken set sail in previously uncharted waters when he began pioneering advances in the software analytics industry. And just like how Europe was forever changed by Magellan’s fateful expedition, Lokken’s journey in developing new data technologies has forever changed the software analytics industry.

The secret for his success can be summed up in his approach toovercomingobstacles.ClayYoung, oneofLokken’scolleagues, explained, “He looks at every problem as an opportunity to go reinvent the solution. Bob jumps in the sandbox with that problem and says, ‘How can I solve that problem better than last month, last year, five years ago, ten years ago?’ What do I know that’s different? What tools do I have that allow me to make a better solution now than what I have ever done before?”

Lokken’s keen ability to develop innovative solutions to problems has served him well throughout his career. In his roles as a Business

Unit Manager and Research and Development Manager for Extended Systems, Lokken was responsible for coming up with solutions to meet pressing high tech challenges. The lessons he learned helped Lokken establish a successful business that set a new standard for the

software analytics industry, ProClarity Corporation.

When Lokken founded ProClarity Corp. in 1995 with a team of colleagues from Extended Systems, that team focused on a specific purpose: To create a streamlined and user-friendly approach to meet company’s business intelligence needs. At the time

Veterans Health Administration.

The concept of WhiteCloud Analytics was first conceived in 2008, during the height of the worst economic downturn in decades. But although other people only saw liabilities, Lokken saw opportunities. When Lokken developed the concept of WhiteCloud Analytics, he recognized how industry trends had created the “perfect storm” of opportunity. The rising cost of healthcare had created an urgent need to drive innovation into this critical market. With the weak economy, investors were also eager to find entrepreneurs who could apply profitable solutions to some of the most pressing societal problems.

Because Lokken had already established himself with a successful track record at ProClarity and Microsoft, investors were interested in Lokken’s proposal—and when he pitched his idea, investors knew they had a winner. After raising capital and attracting experienced professionals, WhiteCloud Analytics was launched in Boise, Idaho, in mid-2009. Within months after launch, WhiteCloud Analytics established consulting relationships and partnerships with several hospitals across the country and developed several prototype solutions.

Today, WhiteCloud Analytics is the leading innovator of methodologies and analytic technologies that eliminate key

information delivery gaps in healthcare systems. Through this technology, the company has empowered hospitals with the information needed to save millions of dollars and significantly transform their quality of care and patient satisfaction. This is made possible through providing

an intuitive way for healthcare leaders to see their data and drive decisions that optimize performance. Because WhiteCloud Analytics is setting a new standard in the industry, its technology, Acute Foundations, is a finalist for this year’s Idaho Innovation Awards.

A large part of Lokken’s success can be attributed to his leadership style and his commitment to create an environment where the best ideas win. He does this through encouraging people to be relentlessly curious and explore new opportunities, which in large part was responsible for inspiring his team to create new data analytics technologies. Lokken also encourages his team to constantly challenge each other’s ideas to find the best possible solution. Because of Lokken’s personal drive and refusal to accept the status quo, it is little surprise that he has invested considerable energy in strengthening Idaho’s community.

Lokken is the Chairman of the Education Alliance of Idaho, the Vice Chair of the Idaho Business for Education, and serves on the boards of several of other nonprofits. Lokken and his company, WhiteCloud Analytics, helped co-found the Idaho TechnologyCouncil(ITC),anonprofitlaunchedin2009toprovidea collaborative effort to strengthen Idaho’s technology industry. “Invention and innovation are at the heart of what Idaho is, but unless we collaborate with the entire technology ecosystem, from research and education, to business-friendly incentives to talent recruitment, we won’t realize the growth we need to create a sustainable industry here,” Lokken said.

Lokken’s expertise has been a valuable asset for the Idaho Technology Council and he currently serves on the ITC’s Executive Committee. Lokken was reluctant to be inducted into the ITC’s Hall of Fame, but the insistence of ITC members won the day.

Colleagues and friends remark that Lokken strongly believes in Idaho’s potential and is forward-looking in his approach in his efforts to build a stronger community. Jeff Rutherford, one of his longtime colleagues, said, “He’s done great things for a lot of us in Idaho around technology, but I think you could put Bob in any industry and he would create havoc by pushing people to think differently about what they’re doing…Bob is very much about action.”

The concept of WhiteCloud Analytics was first conceived in 2008, during the height of the worst economic downturn in decades. But although other people only saw liabilities, Lokken saw opportunities.

MetaGeekIn the words of MetaGeek Founder Ryan Woodings, “MetaGeek is a small, tight-knit teamoffolks(mostlygeeks)thatstrivetocreateeasy-to-usewirelesstroubleshootingtools.” Tired of looking at a big and cumbersome equipment, Woodings acted on a hunch that he could innovate the first Wi-Spy. His hunch and actions paid off. Today, MetaGeek makes professional Wi-Fi troubleshooting tools designed for experts. MetaGeek products are visual, easy-to-use and affordable. The company also offers a product called “inSSIDer” to help consumers understand their wireless networks as well as providing an in-application learning opportunity to educate people about Wi-Fi.

Les Cullen, President, CastleRock Building Products, Inc.Les Cullen has been innovating products and companies since he was 19 years old. While working for a company experiencing blowing sand that was clogging latches, Cullen fixed the problem by putting a square peg into a round hole. The company still uses his design today. Ready for a new challenge, Cullen moved on to innovate the first fireplace insert, which led to a profitable business lasting 18 years. Jumping industries yet again, Cullen moved on to the RV industry where he redesigned the original 40-year-old Hehr RV window to reduce the number of components and labor. He later designed the first insulated RV window with an innovative silicone foam spacer. His latest brainstorm: laminating cultured stone and brick to an insulated, interlocking panel. Cullen has the ability to augment and improve most anything he becomes involved in. His motto is “irreducible simplicity.”

MISSIONThe ITC is dedicated to fostering the development of technology companies in Idaho, primarily in the areas of information technology, agriscience, and energy.

PURPOSEThe ITC provides a valuable forum for industry, research, educators, investors, and government throughout the state. It also advocates for creating a strong technology ecosystem and a high quality, high paid workforce.

OBJECTIVESWe will focus our efforts on:

•Advocacy:Spearheadinnovative policies that spur the growth and adoption of technology in Idaho.

•Education:Strengthenthe research capabilities from state, federal and private sources through the commercialization of intellectual property.

•AlignmentandAwareness:Buildcollaboration and awareness for resources related to funding, starting, running and managing companies and recognize their success.

AcceleratingYourBusinessInIdaho’sInnovationEcosystem

Over the past decade there have been many organizations involved in supporting or driving innovation in Idaho, but never one that involves the entire ecosystem. The ITC is based on successful statewide innovation councils across the country, particularly in those states with perceived geographic isolation such as Utah, Oregon and Iowa.

The benefits of an Idaho-based organization that can serve as a singular, authoritative voice for technology companies are two-fold. First, the ITC can better influence government, business and community leaders to provide needed resources with a broad-based representative effort. In addition, the ITC will be able to foster knowledge transfers and information flows of importance to the entire technology ecosystem of technology companies, especially those without the necessary resources.

• The innovation industries contribute 18.4 percent of Idaho’s $45 billion Gross Domestic Product (GDP),or$8.4billion.Source:IdahoDepartmentof Commerce

• There is no single organization dedicated to developing the entire technology ecosystem in Idaho – from research to technology commercialization to industry advocacy to capital to talent recruitment to government incentives.

• The ITC is a member-driven, non-governmental organization with a board of trustees representing the full spectrum of technology companies doing business in Idaho.

The ITC will focus on three innovation sectors with greatest impact and potential to Idaho: information technology(traditionalhardwareandsoftware),agriscience(landandgrowingsciences),andenergy (alternative sources and optimization of currenttechnology).Beyondfocusingongrowingthe assets of Idaho – natural resources, access to engineering, research, business and technical education and the strength of existing technology companies – the ITC will create an innovation umbrella to foster communication.

The ITC will outline a multi-year technology road map to demonstrate how resources work together in Idaho with clear, deliverable, and measurable results. Three key strategic areas will be the growth of the technology sector, building a quality workforce, and identifying/addressing funding gaps.

We need a go-to organization to provide advocacy and resources that understands the complex nature of technology”

– Peter Gombert, Founder and CEO, Balihoo

ITC ADVANTAGES

Leadership from the private sector The Idaho Technology Council is well represented by both established and growing Idaho companies who understand what our industry needs to be successful. The ITC seeks to improve the innovation ecosystem by fostering the growth of Idaho tech companies. Strong leadership from the private sector helps the ITC focus its efforts strategically and align its efforts with key stakeholders to create maximum impact.

Strong partnerships with Idaho public officials

The ITC meets each quarter with the Governor to create alignment between the private and public sectors and work together to build a stronger knowledge-based economy. The ITC also works with other public officials on a federal, state, and local level to create alignment and synergy.

Focused approach towards growingIdaho’s tech industries

The ITC is organized around industry clusters, which are defined as geographic or segmented concentrations of interconnected companies and institutions in a specific field. These clusters provide efficient ways to grow and strengthen interconnected companies and institutions. The ITC’s Software Alliance cluster and Energy Consortium cluster helps accelerate industry growth and create new opportunities in both the private and public sector. The ITC is also in the process of launching a new cluster focused on Life Sciences and Agriculture.
