5ANNUAL REPORT 2014
Dear Friends:
In 2000, IDEA started with a singular mission: to prepare our state’s most underserved kids for college.
This year, we turned 15, and I turned 40. I want to take a moment to reflect upon how we stack up to the mission that has motivated us from day one. I want to look at the difference we’re making in our corner of the world—a corner once limited to the scrappy town of Donna, Texas, that has since expanded across the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Austin.
My bottom-line conclusion is this: We are meeting our mission, yet we still have a long way to go. We’ve still not created a solution that matches the scale of the problem facing children and families, and I know my peers and counterparts in charter management and education reform organizations nationwide would say the same.
How do I know we’re meeting our mission?
Since our first year of graduates in 2007, 100% of our high schools’ seniors have applied to and been accepted to college–that’s 1,465 graduates! And in every year but one, 100% of our graduates have matriculated into college, with a six-year college completion success rate nearly six times the national average.
But it’s not just college stats that show we’re meeting our mission. For the past 13 years, IDEA’s student achievement scores have exceeded the state-wide average every year. People thought it couldn’t be done–especially with a student body that is majority low-income and Hispanic. We know better. Our students are smart and capable and with our support, they are beating the odds.
This past year alone, we’ve graduated more than 500 students, helped our students earn more than 2,034 college acceptances and $22 million in scholarships, been ranked in the top 1% of all high schools by U.S. News and World Report, and celebrated as several of our students and teachers received national awards.1 And that’s just a quick snapshot! Some believe our results are too good to be true. Even Texas Governor Greg Abbot questioned our success on the campaign trail. And though places like Politifact have validated our work, the only validation I need is from the families who have benefited from an IDEA education.2
These achievements are great and we should celebrate, but past success is not enough. Where do we go from here?
In August 2015, we will be at 44 schools, up from our current 36. Even though we’re serving a record 22,800 students, there are many more waiting for the opportunity to get a world-class education that prepares them for college and life. Time is running out for these children and families and so we are stepping up to the plate.
By 2017 we intend to grow to 60 schools across our three regions, and by 2018 we intend to launch our next expansion region.

6 IDEA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
A college degree has never been more important for financial security. The wage gap between college graduates and their high school educated counterparts is at an all-time high. Sadly, students in the lowest income quartile are the least like to complete college. The completion rate for this group has hovered for years at 21%. 3 That’s the unacceptable situation that our growth and expansion is trying to remedy. We are taking our proven IDEA model into more communities so that more of our kids can succeed in college. Our remarkable student achievement results have occurred during a time of tremendous growth. Since our founding, our annual compound growth rate has averaged 49%--our lowest annual growth rate has been 21% and our highest, 200%.

7ANNUAL REPORT 2014
Of course, we’re not pursuing growth for growth’s sake. We are building schools because time is running out for children and families in America today. In a new study, the University of Pennsylvania reported that children from families in the top income quartile in America (earning $100,000 or higher) 99% of students who begin college earn their degree by 24 years of age.3 That number is up 44% over the last several decades. But for families in the lowest income quartile (an annual income of $38,000 or lower), the completion rate is only 21%--and it’s a rate that hasn’t seen consistent growth over the past several decades. Upper income children and making rapid gains and poor children are treading water—that’s the unacceptable situation that our growth and expansion is trying to remedy.
The “secret” about IDEA Public Schools is that there’s nothing we’re doing that couldn’t be copied, immediately, by every other public school in America. The secret is that there’s no secret. Our past and future success is rooted in a few simple principles:
We hire the best teachers, and then we are rigorous in how we train and support them. Each of them. We invest in leadership because next to the teacher, the school principal is the most important factor in the success of our students. We engage our students and parents by clearly explaining what success looks like and then helping them meet that expectation. We challenge every student, every day. We focus relentlessly on data so that we know where each student is excelling and struggling. And most importantly? We work hard!
I invite you to take a closer look at all the work we’ve been doing at IDEA Public Schools by flipping through the rest of this year’s report and learning about some of the amazing things our students have accomplished.
Thank you for your continued support. Because of you, we are making a difference for tens of thousands of students across our great state.
College for All Children!
