Welcome to Idea Store Learning
People who make a choice to learn in their own time do so for many reasons. Many want to become qualified or learn a new skill to help them in their work or family. Some want to meet people, remain active or keep up with their children.
Whatever your reason for learning we have a class, course, programme or activity for you. At an average cost of just £2.20 per hour, our courses are great value for money. We also have a very wide concessionary fee scheme aimed at helping local people to get back into learning.
Idea Store Learning has a team of expert, experienced and passionate tutors who will teach and lead you. They make learning informative, enjoyable and fun. They will help you make the most of your time as a learner as you study. You will find an excellent range of facilities across the borough in our Idea Stores and learning centres.
As you browse through this guide, you will see that this year we have a range of new courses including Community Interpreting, exciting opportunities to be creative through our arts and design courses and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Staff in the centres will welcome you warmly and help provide the motivation and support you need to be successful. Should you need it, specialist advice and guidance can be provided.
Whether you are studying for a day or a year, in the daytime or evening, as a valued member of our community I would personally like to thank you for choosing Idea Store Learning.

Our offer to students
As well as support from Tower Hamlets Council, Idea Store Learning receives an annual grant from the Skills Funding Agency who regulate us and who work with Ofsted to inspect us. This places a set of demands on us to maintain our funding and our offer to you. To do this we have to comply with those demands.
We have to show planning of learning and evidence that learning is taking place, and we have to provide records that relate to enrolment and attendance on programmes. In return we are able to offer a wide variety of courses and classes that are extremely good value for money to a wide range of residents of the borough.
Attendance
We expect 100% attendance on courses but, of course, we recognise that you may not always be able to attend each session. Please notify us if you are going to be absent. If you miss four consecutive weeks, you will be withdrawn from the course.
Refunds
If you are unable to take up your place on a course a fee refund will only be given where you notify Idea Store Learning in writing at least two weeks before the start date of your course. An administration fee of £11 will be charged for processing your refund.
Where we close a course you will be given a full refund. If we change the published details of a course those learners for whom the course is no longer suitable will receive a full refund.
NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN IN ANY OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES.
Please Note….
This course guide provides descriptions of a selection of courses available at Idea Store Learning. The start of any courses in this booklet is subject to numbers enrolling and resourses. Idea Store Learning reserves the right to close or amend courses including fee amendments.
The 3 C’s: Compliments, Complaints and Comments
You can find a 3C form for you to record your compliments and comment in all our Idea Stores and Learning Centres, however;• Please discuss any concerns or complaints
with your tutors first. We will try and resolve the issue there and then.
• Alternatively, complete a 3C form and forward it to: Learner Support Team, Idea Store Learning, Tower Hamlets Council, 3rd Floor, 1 Gladstone Place, Bow, London, E3 5EQ
We aim to acknowledge your issue and respond to it within 10 working days. Where it takes longer to resolve an issue, we will keep you informed.
We aim to operate a complaints procedure that is –
• Fair
• Responsive
• Effective
You can expect us to deal promptly and courteously with your complaints.

Every year we ask for feedback from our learners in surveys and learner satisfaction is very high. Last year learners said that they were made to feel welcome, they would recommend their courses and that they felt safe.
Achievement levels are high and learners are very satisfied with the way they were taught, the group of people they met and the challenges learning placed on them.
Learners told us that their skills improved, their personal safety was treated as a high priority and that they learned what they wanted to learn. In all of the categories we asked learners about, over 90% of responses said that the experience of learners was good or excellent.
All our main Idea Store sites are accessible for those with reduced mobility. However at Bethnal Green Centre and Shadwell Centre only classes on the ground floor are accessible to people with reduced mobility.
A variety of support is available for people with physical or learning disabilities.
If you would like more information on the support available call us on 020 7364 5665 or email [email protected]

Valuing diversity is one of the four core values of Tower Hamlets Council.
We at Idea Store Learning will promote diversity and equality in everything we do to improve the quality of life for everyone living, working and visiting Tower Hamlets. The borough’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths and assets.
We will build upon this by working with the Tower Hamlets Partnership to provide accessible and responsive services that enable everyone to take part in the social, cultural and economic wealth of the borough.
Achieving this is central to delivering the Council’s vision, is linked to our Strategic Plan priorities and objectives and forms a driving force within the Community Plan and key to creating a cohesive community.
Our aims and values
As a service provider we will:
• Promote equality of opportunity and eliminate discrimination in the planning and delivery of our services in terms of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, health and income status
• Promote good relations between communities and address negative stereotyping of any groups
• Ensure that all residents have equal opportunity to participate in the democratic process
• Tackle harassment relating to a person’s age, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, health and income status

Preparation for Life and Work
CASE STUDY
ESOLJoydul began learning while attending a children’s centre to support her family. She started to learn English with Idea Store Learning on a Family Learning Course at her local children’s centre.
This improved her confidence and inspired her to learn more. Through the course she learned how to support the development of her children through language play and parenting skills. She also learned ICT and budgeting to help her manage at home.
She now is on a semi intensive ESOL course at Idea Store Bow which means that she attends four days a week. She is also doing an ICT course too. She hopes to get some voluntary work and eventually become a Teaching Assistant.

CASE STUDY
Get Ahead in Family MathsEmma’s learning journey began when she enrolled on the Idea Store Learning Family Maths course at her children’s school. She joined the course to support her children. She began to do well on the course and discovered a thirst for learning; she started both supporting other parents and pushing her teachers so she could learn more.
Emma was nominated by her Maths tutor for an Adult Learners’ Week award which she won in May 2011. Emma says about her learning “It hasn’t been straightforward but it has been wonderful for my children to see me go through this journey”. She is grateful to her tutor at Idea Store Learning who “gave me the push, confidence and self belief to achieve”.

Tracy ClemensMother-of-three Tracy Clemens was filing some tax returns last year when she started to realise a lack of knowledge about taxation, book-keeping and accounts was holding her back in life.
“I was filling out the forms and found for instance we could have claimed for my husband’s uniform,” says Tracy, 38. “I got quite upset that I was so ignorant about the subject and decided there and then to go back to school.”
Tracy enrolled on a course to learn book-keeping and having just achieved a Diploma is now taking exams in accountancy.

Do you want to gain an internationally recognised English qualification from the prestigious University of Cambridge?
What is the Cambridge First Certificate in English?
The Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE), is an exam for people who need to prove they can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level for work or study purposes.
How would it benefit me?
This qualification demonstrates that you have a good level of proficiency in English for use in the workplace and in general social interaction. It is an internationally recognised qualification that will benefit your career and quality of life in any job or country throughout the world that requires a good level of English language skills.
How long does it take to complete?
The course is offered in the evening time, to suit learners who have work or family commitments during the day-time. It is run two days a week (over a variety of days) for 17 weeks and each class starts at 6.30pm and last just over two hours. The course is available at a number of venues throughout the borough.
How much will it cost?
The cost for this course is £658. You may pay the fee in two instalments. The full fee must be paid before you can sit the exams for this course. The course is very good value. It is delivered by excellent tutors in a vibrant learning environment. The course includes over 80 hours of teaching time costing only less than £9 per hour of learning. The price for both the Cambridge First Certificate and the Preliminary English Test includes exam fees.
What if my current level of English is not strong enough to complete the Cambridge First Certificate?
Don’t worry. Idea Store Learning also offers the Cambridge Preliminary English Test, for learners who may need a lower level course to begin with.
“I am working in an international environment which requires me to continuously improve my English. After the exam I got the motivation to study more English and then decided to enrol in an MBA conducted in English. The certificate helped me to complete my enrolment procedures as a proof of my English level.”

CASE STUDY
Jo HalsteadJo enrolled on our City & Guilds Fashion Wear course with the intention of pursuing her ambition to design and retail her own recycling fashion label. Jo has a degree in Art but lacked the necessary pattern construction skills required to produce high end garments. The course has certainly taught her how to construct and make high quality fashion wear and with these newly learned skills Jo is in a much better position of setting up her own fashion label.
As well as studying on the city and guilds fashion wear course Jo has also enrolled on and successfully passed a number of short programmes in pattern cutting – make your chosen garment, printmaking, and recycle and customise clothes.

Do you need to complete an IELTS exam to meet the entry requirements of a University in the United Kingdom?
What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s leading test of English for higher education, immigration and employment. Almost 1.5 million learners take the IELTS exam each year.
What do I need IELTS for?

This course prepares candidates, whatever their level, to sit the exam and reach their highest potential in the exam. This course does not include the IELTS exam, which must be taken and paid for separately at an IELTS test centre.
How long does it to complete?
This course takes just 5 weeks to complete. The course is run two days per week at a variety of times to suit your needs.
How much does it cost?
The Preparation for IELTS course costs £300.

Family Learning Arabic & Bengali
All parents want their children to do well at school and to succeed. However, many simply don’t know where to start. We run family learning classes that
give parents and carers the opportunity to learn together with their children, as well as a chance to share ideas with other parents and develop their own skills.
If you are a parent interested in family learning Arabic or Bengali classes, for further information, text ‘leap’ and your name to 88020, email [email protected] or call to leave your details on 020 7364 5665 and a member of the team will call you back.
