Hello Prospective BFA Dance Student! We look forward to seeing your talent at our Student Dance Scholarship Audition on President’s Day Holiday on Monday, February 18, 2019. One must declare a major in BFA Dance Performance to be eligible for consideration. Orientation to our Program begins at 10 am in Gabel Hall. The audition consists of a ballet class followed by modern dance combinations. The actual audition lasts approximately 2 hours. Proper attire is required. Forms are below, and can be printed and filled out beforehand or there will be forms available the day of the audition. Prior to Audition If you haven't already, please complete ALL of your financial aid/FAFSA as soon as possible. The earlier your FAFSA and financial aid information is available to us, the better equipped we are to offer scholarships. Any questions about financial aid should be directed to the Financial Aid Office at NIU. It is encouraged that you have everything completed before the December of your senior year. http://www.niu.edu/fa/contact.shtml If you haven't already, please apply to the university. http://niu.edu/admissions/apply/ The BFA in Dance Performance is a program for students interested in a career in dance or in continuing their dance training at the university level. The program emphasizes equal training in ballet and modern techniques. In addition to technique classes, students take a wide variety of course offerings including Choreography, Dance History, Dance Philosophy, Analysis and Pedagogy of Dance, Business of Dance, Pointe, Partnering, Male Techniques, Jazz, Acting, and Pilates. The Dance Program also provides numerous and varied performance opportunities. The Dance Program presents two main stage performances each year. These concerts can present original works by renowned NIU Dance faculty as well as guest artists. NIU is one of the few university programs that present full-length masterworks from standard ballet repertoire including “Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Giselle”, “Coppelia” and “Le Corsaire”. Modern works such as “Carmina Burana” and Doris Humphrey’s “With My Red Fires” have been part of our performance season. In 2015, the Dance Program featured the work, “Spent Days Out Yonder” by the world renowned postmodern choreographer, Bill T. Jones. This work performed to a live string quartet was presented not only on campus but in Chicago at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts. In addition, two student concerts are produced each year. “Art for Life” is a student concert incorporating all the arts on campus. All proceeds from this concert are donated to the Dance for Life Aids Foundation of Chicago. Student Choreographic Showcase”, an adjudicated production, highlights the best of NIU Dance student’s choreographic talents. Again, thank you for your interest in the NIU School of Theatre and Dance. We look forward to meeting and working with you. The dance faculty will be available that day to answer any questions you may have about the program. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or my office phone, 815-753-5503. We realize selecting a university is a big decision so please come visit and get to know us. Sincerely, Judy Chitwood Coordinator/Professor of Dance, School of Theatre and Dance
