Mood Board

Name Surname Candidate no Centre no. 22127 A Level Product Design

Existing Designs for the ElderlyLooking at the links I have given you and the guidance you had for doing layouts create a mood board on innovative

existing products for the elderly. You will then evaluate the designs below.

Existing Designs for the product I am exploring. On this side you are going to create a mood board of existing designs (not specifically for the elderly) that you can

find. These should be a mix of basic designs and images and innovative designs that might exist in the sector.

How did you choose your images? What have you learnt from finding these images? What do you think about the provision of products for the elderly, are they well designed, what could be improved?

How did you choose your images? What could you use from what you have found? What could you improve upon? What kind of things could you improve upon/modify?

Design Brief

Name Surname Candidate no Centre no. 22127 A Level Product Design

You are now going to write a preliminary design brief for your project. You should illustrate any points you can with images.

What is the problem you have identified?Where did you get the information? How do you know it’s a problem?Illustrate the point.

What is the solution you are going to look at and why?

What is your design brief? State what you are going to design, who for and how it will address the points above. What other considerations might you make, for instance are you going to think about what it looks like?

Target marketWho is your target market.

Outline some key facts about them.

Introduction: Explain why it is necessary to analyse existing products and how will it help the design process? Guide 1-2 pages

Choose a product or design that is similar to the one you will be designing.

In a paragraph explain why you have chosen this design. Then analyse the design under the following criteria.

PurposeFormFunctionUser requirementsPerformance requirementsMaterials and componentsSizeQualitySafety Scale of ProductionCost

Use details from the product to illustrate your answers

Identification of Key Technical Points.

Look at what you have learnt by conducting the analysis. What points are important for your product?Choose some of the key headings (such as User Requirements and Materials & Components) and suggest how these will help you go forward and design your product.

Introduction: Explain why it is necessary to look into ideas at this stage. What do you hope to achieve?

Title of design

Explain the idea and why you have done this.

What area are you looking at?

Why have you chosen this?

What problem does it solve?

How does it fit in with your target audience

This is the guidance from the specification.

At this stage it is expected that the student will begin to explore their thinking on possible solutions by producing concept ideas that take into account the information collected. At this stage of the process these first concept ideas will merely demonstrate the student's initial thinking and should serve to stimulate later more considered thoughts regarding their design proposal(s) and design prototype(s).

First concepts are both fully relevant to the context and feasible for further development and are clearly communicated through a fully appropriate variety of methods and techniques.

Strengths and weaknesses. What works well about some of the designs? What doesn't work so well?

ConclusionHow are you going to take these ideas forward? What limitations do the designs have? Are you going to rethink the brief?Has there be anything unexpected that you have found out?

Title of design

Explain the idea and why you have done this.

What area are you looking at?

Why have you chosen this?

What problem does it solve?

How does it fit in with your target audience

Put in electronic annotations if your designs don’t have any.

Introduction: Explain why it is necessary to undertake a user study, who you have chosen and why?

User Study (How a user interacts with the product)

You will need to find a product that is similar to the one you are making.

Find someone who is from your target market and willing to be photographed.

Whilst observing the user interacting with the product try to ascertain the main issues that need to be addressed. You are looking for strengths as well as weaknesses in the product. These should be highlighted clearly in your writing and in your photographs.

You could use criteria such as form (what does it look like), function (what does it do and how does it do it), user requirements (what does the person using it need it to do) and performance requirements (how does it perform over time) to help inform your observations if you want.

User Study – Identification of design needs

Once you have conducted your study you should now be able to identify any considerations for the design of your product. What makes a good design in your chosen product area? How could you make it better and more fit for purpose? What key features might you focus on?

Ergonomics and AnthropometricsExplain what is meant by Ergonomics and Anthropometrics? Illustrate them as well, it might be good to concentrate on the Anthropometric/Ergonomic areas that might fit in with your project .

Anthropometrics and Ergonomics– Identification of design needs

Now you need to identify the Anthropometric and Ergonomic considerations that might have to be thought about when you are designing your product. Why are you going to consider them, how might they make your product safer, easier to use etc.

Practical exploration of user needs

Name Surname Candidate no Centre no. 22127 A Level Product Design

Here you are going to write about your user group simulation experience in detail. You should specify that this is an investigation into the physical manipulation of things, with a focus on dexterity, visual impairment and mobility.

Discuss the simulation devices you will be using, and the products/tasks you will explore, and justify why this is relevant to your design project.

FindingsHow did this process help to inform you of the user needs? How will this process inform your design ideas?Consider: - Product development and improvement- Fitness for purpose (within target user group)- Ergonomics and Anthropometrics

As a result of this investigation, what constraints have been brought to light and need to be considered when designing for the elderly?

Describe each step exploredDescribe each task tried - justify how it relates to your design brief and user groupHow did wearing the gloves/glasses/hearing

defenders affect your ability to complete this task?

Describe the difficulties in detail, and consider what/why certain aspects were more difficult

when wearing the simulation devices.

How did wearing the gloves/glasses/hearing defenders affect your ability to use the products/complete a task?Describe the difficulties in detail, and consider what/why/how certain aspects were more difficult when wearing the simulation devices.

Consider how the following sensory functions changed when wearing the simulation devices to experience the product; - Dexterity - Vision- Hearing - Thinking- User moodDescribe and document the physical and emotive response you felt whilst investigating. Did this affect how you engaged with the product/task?

You could write about this with subheadings for the different senses, or display for a more direct comparison between functional tasks in a table format (see below)

Overall Simulation Experience

Task/Process Dexterity Vision Hearing Mobility User mood

Describe each step explored in detailInclude photographic documentation of the different stages of your explorationDescribe each task tried - justify how it relates to your design brief, user group and stakeholder needs

Simulation Experience

Reading labelsReading fine print and being able to distinguish details when there is little contrast on the item was particularly challenging when wearing the visual impairment simulation glasses. My initial reaction was to feel for any tactile information, however the gloves proved that gaining clarity was also challenging, and I had not anticipated how much I relied on my fine motor skills and sensitivity during this task.

Opening a bottleOpening a bottle lid, which is something I do most days with ease, was much more difficult with the stiffness and lack of flexibility these ‘arthritis’ gloves simulated. I became acutely aware of the need for more ‘grip’ and a larger surface area to grasp.

Picture usageCrop your images to what is

relevant so you make maximum

use of your layout and space. The

grid gives you flexibility in using

different size images whilst

keeping a structured feel to your

layout.

Research Analysis

Name Surname Candidate no Centre no. 22127 A Level Product Design

Introduction: Explain why it is necessary to analyse your research.

You are now going to analyse your research. Use thumbnails of your pages to illustrate your thoughts

What did the pages and research tell you, under a heading for each page discuss the following:

What did you do?Why did you think it was going to be helpful? What did you learn?Did it change any of your perceptions? How will this information be helpful going forward?

New Design Brief

The design brief should be a serious of justified statements about what you are going to design. You should answer the following questions.

What is your design going to be? What have you learnt from research? Why are you designing this?Who is it for?Why is it going to help them? Why is going to be different from products that already exist? What elements are you going to include? Are you going to consider what it looks like?

Example: I am going to design a new cleaning carrying and storing system for the elderly. I have found from research that the elderly find cleaning difficult and need help with this.

Page 12: Identification of a Design Need – The Developing …...Identification of a Design Need – The Developing World Name Surname Candidate no Centre no. 22127 A Level Product Design

Identifying Design Needs On this page you are going to talk about the what you have learnt from the research section that will enable you to write your specification (the list of all the things your design needs to do).

For this page you are identifying the measurable points you will make on your formal specification. You will be looking at issues you find from research and then confirming them with your client. The points should go like this:

User Requirements

From looking at my user study I can see that it is important that my product is lightweight.

Client Feedback

Yes, I agree weight is very important. I find it really difficult to clean already so if I am cleaning upstairs I will need to be able to transport a cleaning device upstairs.

PurposeWhat is the primary purpose of your proposed product?

FormWhat form will it take? Will it be one thing or many?

AestheticsHow attractive does the product need to be? How important is this?

FunctionHow will the product function? Will it have any interactivity?

User requirementsWhat does the user need form the proposed product? How will they need to interact with it? What about weight or any other points?

Performance requirementsHow will the product need to perform over time, durability etc?

Materials and componentsWhat materials will it need to be made from? What component parts will it have?

SizeWhat size will the product need to be?

QualityHow good a quality will the product need to be? Does it need to be utilitarian? Does it need to be made of high quality materials?

Safety How important is safety?

CostHow important is cost?

Specification Guide 1-2 pages.

On this page you are going to write your formal specification for your designs. All points must be realistic, technical and measurable.

Purpose Form Aesthetics Function User requirements

The purpose of my product will be to help the elderly with everyday cleaning tasks.

Justification from researchI know that through looking at my target market that many elderly people are unable to carry out cleaning tasks. The elderly still want to keep their houses clean.

How this can be measuredThroughout the design and development process I will get feedback from my target market and see if they like the design. I will also get them to interact with my design and see if it is easy to use

Design development – modeling

On this page you are going to document your model making. You must really think like designers here. This page is meant to be bit of an overview we will go into a bit more detail later. PLEASE REMEMBER THE IMAGES NEED TO BE THE HERO OF THE PAGE.

It is up to you how you lay the page out but there must be enough detail shown and what is written. Show photos of the process and both show and annotate the following things (please note these must be explicit to get the marks):

You must also show someone interacting with your design.

How you changed the design as you were making the model. What design decisions did you make? What did you change and why?

How does the design perform against your design brief?

How does the design perform against your specification?

What parts of your research can you use as you go forward?

What further research might you need to do?

How does the design perform with your user group?

Improvements to be made – what do you still need to modify?
