IDENTIFYING BURDENSTraining Session 23.10.2015
Worlds Trials
-next Wednesday-exercises and debates-really good practice(in general and for other trials)-lots of fun-join FB event
Social!
-After session at Curiositea-Some FREE FOOD and FREE DRINKS-Get a chance to meet us/have a chat-Have some fun and chill (karaoke and other activities also included)
Plan for today
-short recap-what burdens are/are not-why they are they important-how to identify them-a few examples-exercise-debate
What is a burden?
-one of the ‘things’ you need to prove for your side of the motion to be true-it is not a specific argument. You use arguments to prove burdens-Prop and Opp will have different burdens-in order to win, Prop needs to prove all burdens-Opp does not need to prove all burdens to win
Why are burdens important?
What commonly happens-motion gets announced-teams think of arguments-the deliver those arguments during the debate-they lose to other teams
Justification: arguments were done fine, but they did not fulfil the burdensOther team did better job at that. So they win.
What does this mean?
-when you do the ‘what I am going to prove’ part of your speech does not guaranteeyou will do it-thinking about burdens during prep keeps you relevant to the debate-it’s better to build arguments AROUND burdens-saying that something is a burden does not necessarily make it a (good) burden
Also take care of-not setting yourself too high a burden-or too low a burden
You want to feel like this …not like this
How to go about it from Prop
-find the problem in the current state of the world(what arethe scariest/worse things happening in the SQ)
-show that those harms necessitate action/justify action
-show that your action is 1) Legitimate(is the state/actor in a position to do this? Why/not?) 2) Efficient/necessary indifferent of efficiency
-sometimes efficiency does not matter that much(you can’t fully predict future but you need to prove plausibility of efficiency)
How to go about it from Opp
Option 1
-sometimes(but not always) a burden will be disproving a prop burden-show a good in current situation-mitigate the benefits brought by Prop-prove that motion makes problem worse-you can also prove that it’s not the state’s/actor’s business
Option 2
-show why a state should not be acting in this way-this option is trickier
MOTION: THW REQUIRE ALL SCHOOLS TO TEACH SAFE SEX TO CHILDREN FROM AGE 10 REGARDLESS OF PARENTAL CONSENT.
Government:
1. Children are old enough to learn about safe-sex at age 10.2. It is necessary that children know about safe-sex from age 10. 3. The state has the authority to overrule the wishes of parents on this
issue (due to 1. and unlike some vaccines)
Opposition:
4. Children are too young to know about safe-sex at age 10.5. It is unnecessary to teach them about it at age 10 because it is
irrelevant to their lives.6. Parents have the authority to decide if they do/do not want their
children taught about this issue at age 10 because it is controversial and is not urgent (due to 1. and 2.)
THW PAY SMOKERS TO QUIT SMOKINGGovernment1) Smoking has a large negative impact on society as a whole.2) It is legitimate/fair to pay smokers to quit smoking.3) It will lead to a reduction in smoking.
