    What Is Industrial Engineering?

    Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design ofproduction systems.

    The Industrial Engineer analyzes and specifies

    integrated components of people, machines, andfacilities to create efficient and effective systems thatproduce goods and services beneficial to mankind.

    Department History The department was founded in 1930, with the first

    BSIE degrees awarded in 1933 to Henry K. Saundersand Harold E. Thompson. Col. Frank Groseclose wasthe first head, from 1938-1942.

    The department, first at NCSU to benamed, was named after 1961 alumEdward P. Fitts on 9/23/005.

    Graduate programs initiated in

    1947-48, with the first Mastersdegree granted in 1950.

    Department History (cont.)

    A proposal to offer a doctoralprogram was accepted by theUniversity in 1967, with the first

    Ph.D. awarded in 1969. The Furniture Manufacturing and

    Management Center was createdin 1991, and the first B.S.I.E., FM

    degree was awarded to PaulBottoms in 1993.

    General Information

    An ABET accredited program, granting bachelors,

    masters, and Ph.D degrees each year.

    Undergraduate program ranked 13th and graduate

    program ranked 12th in the country by US News &World Report in 2004.

    65 B.S., 30 M.S., and 5 Ph.Ddegrees were awarded in academic

    year 2004-2005. 23 teaching assistants and 25

    research assistants on staff.

    Faculty & Staff

    Currently, there are 22 faculty on staff, with 9 adjunctprofessors, 4 technical support personnel, and 6administrative staff members.

    2 current IE professors are former NCSU IEdepartment heads.

    1 IE professor is a member of the National Academyof Engineers.

    Several are members of the Academy of OutstandingTeachers and have been recognized as AlumniDistinguished Professors.

    Students in IE

    Currently, there are 219 undergraduate and 89graduate students in IE.

    In 2004-2005, 17 IE undergraduates held prestigious

    Park, Caldwell, Gant, Fitts, and Duncanscholarships.

    Over 25% of graduates earn honors distinction.

    Over 60% have held co-op or

    internship positions with majormanufacturing companies.

    One common student advisor.
