IEC & EN 62368-1
General Introduction
by Ole Morten Aaslund
What is it …
• New safety standard
• Covering products currently under the scopes of
IEC & EN 60065 and 60950-1
• Components and subassemblies
• Accessories
28.11.2017 62368-1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION2
• Hazard based
• Technology independent
• Having its own rationale document(IEC Technical Report IEC/TR 62368-2)
What is it …
28.11.2017 62368-1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION3
• Not a simple merger of 60065 and 60950-1
• Not a risk-based standard
What is it NOT …
28.11.2017 62368-1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION4
Objectives
• Be performance based
• Type test standard
• Re-use of IEC basic standards
• Meet above in a “user friendly” manner

Energy source classification
• Class 1: Level 1 energy under normal and
abnormal conditions and level 2 under single fault
conditions
• Class 2: Exceeding level 1 and not exceeding
level 2 under all conditions
• Class 3: Exceeding level 2
28.11.2017 62368-1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION9
Energy source classification by declaration
• The manufacturer may declare a Class 1
energy source to be either a Class 2 energy
source or a Class 3 energy source
• Safeguards shall be applied according to the
declared class
28.11.2017 62368-1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION10
Energy source classification by declaration
• The line & neutral conductor is declared a
Class 3 electrical energy source
• A protective conductor is a Class 1 electrical
energy source and cannot be declared a higher
class energy source

Safety evaluation process
The limit values for determining whether
or not an energy source is hazardous are
based on IEC Basic and Group safety
publications.
The safeguard tests and parameters are
based on IEC Basic and Group safety
publications.

A BASIC SAFEGUARD is:A safeguard that is effective under normal and abnormal operating conditions whenever hazardous energy is present.
A SUPPLEMENTARY SAFEGUARD is:A safeguard that is effective in the event of a single fault of any part, including a fault of the basic safeguard.
28.11.2017 62368-1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION16
Safeguard
A REINFORCED SAFEGUARD is: A single, robust safeguard that is effective under normal operating conditions, abnormal operating conditions, and single fault condition.
