Introduction:

The ComSoc chapter of IEEE Kolkata section is formed in 13 Oct 2003 and actively engaged with various activities like DLT, Technical Lectures and Workshop etc. The Geo code of this chapter is –CH10300. The great news to share for the IEEE ComSoc Kolkata Chapter is the Winner of the 2015 Chapter Achievement Award in Asia Pacific Region. The detail new is published in the IEEE Global Communication Letter October 2015. The glimpses of this news are given here. Chapter received 900 USD and the CAA Plaque.

Like the previous year, in 2015 the Chapter has organized many programs those are highlighted below: A. Distinguished Lecturer Tour : DLT 2015

DLT Speaker: Dr. Bhumip Khasnabish of ZTE (TX) Inc., USA was kind enough to contact us to deliver a distinguished lecture program at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India on 28‐04‐2015. The distinguished lecture program was organized by IEEE Communication Society, Kolkata chapter and Department of Electronics and Telecommunicaton, on Smart Body Sensor Object Networking. The talk was actively attended by more than 60 participants from industry and academia. Prof. Iti Saha Misra, CoMSoC Chairperson of Kolkata Section

gave the welcome address for the DLT speaker and Prof. S.K. Sanyal, Execom Member of the Chapter provided vote of thanks.

Dr. Khasnabish has presented a futuristic scenario to the audience in which, sensors would be extension of our physical senses. Moreover, the networking of multiple sensors would give us holistic insight to our life styles and behavioral patterns. This knowledge would help us to lead more informed life in order to avoid some impending crisis such as serious health hazard or accident. The session has been quite interactive. Participants were quite excited about the ideas and potentials of body sensors and have raised various questions on the topic.

B. IEEE Technical Lecture Meeting

1. The first Technical Lecture meeting was held on 08 th July 2015 on the Topic of Software Defined Networking, delivered by Mr. Subhedu Bhadra, CISCO Research India Head. He is ex-BCSE (1996) and later did his Masters from IIT Kanpur, Venue: Room No T-3-7, ETCE Department, Jadavpur University. No. of Participants: 40

Asst. Prof. at California State University, Monterey Bay, USA. The talk was on the topic of Efficient Routing and Scheduling in Wireless Networks.

Participants for 14 th July program : Teacher, Industry participant and ETCE students

Dr. Anand’s research interest encompasses various aspects of wireless networks including mobile ad-hoc networks, cache networks, sensor networks and 3G/4G networks. He delivered the talk in a very interesting way. The spatio-temporal variation in wireless channel conditions, node mobility makes it challenging to design protocols for wireless networks. In this talk, he presented efficient routing and scheduling algorithms which overcome these challenges in wireless networks and improve user-level performance. There were 50 participants from UG, PG and research scholars of the Department among which 8 IEEE members were there. 3. C. IEEE One day Seminar for Technical Lecture Series with Industry participation

An IEEE Special Lecture series has been held on 25th July 2015, Saturday, at the ECE Dept of Narula Institute of Technology organized by IEEE ComSoC Chapter. There were total 3 series of lectures on the selected topics. The Seminar was held over 11.00 am to 5.00 pm.

A seminar program on the topics of Recent Researches on Wireless Communication was organized by IEEE COMSOC Kolkata Chapter and Department of ECE, Narula Institute of Technology on 25th July 2015 from 11am to 5 pm. There were series of lectures delivered by experienced academia and Industry professionals. The seminar aims for communicating conceptual knowledge as a formal lecture makes it easier for the students, researchers, faculties and staff members to draw attention and develop themselves. It intends to provide more quantitative knowledge creating high level skills and human resource development and focuses on advancing the electro-technology. Prof. (Dr.) S Panda, Head, ECE, Narula Institute of Technology inaugurated the seminar with his inaugural speech about the objective and outcome of this seminar. He talked about the long association of ECE Department, NIT and IEEEin various events. The program started with the lightening of the auspicious Lamp and welcome address by Principle of Narula Institute Of Technology Prof. (Dr.) M.R Kanjilal who welcomed our Honorable guests Prof. (Dr.) Salil Kumar Sanyal, ETCE Department, Jadavpur University, Chairperson IEEE Circuits & Systems-Kolkata Section, Prof. (Dr.) Iti Saha Misra, Head-ETCE department, Jadavpur University, Chairperson IEEE ComSoc , Kolkata Section. The ComSoc Chairperson at first narrated the importance of IEEE in our society and gave a thrust for membership development and addressed the students to bear the torch of IEEE community. She also invited young faculties to be active members who were present in the Seminar Hall.

Prof. S.K. Sanyal Prof. Iti Saha Misra Mr. Anirban Dutta Chowdhury First Lecture was at11.30 am: delivered by Prof. Salil Kumar Sanyal, ETCE Department, Jadavpur University on the Topic: SOME ASPECTS IN EAVLUATING THE PERFORMANCE OF DIGITAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: AN INFORMATION THEORETIC APPROACH. Prof. Sanyal with his usual dynamic style delivered the lecture discussing the key issues behind the performance evaluation and features of information source and also explained the correlation between uncertainty, surprise and information. He taught source coding, coding efficiency, Shanon’s source coding theorem and Huffman Coding. The two important papers are highlighted with references on “Mathematical theory of communication” and “Communication in presence of Noise”. 2nd Lecture was at 1.00 pm delivered by Prof. Iti Saha Misra, HoD of ETCE Dept., Jadavpur University and ComSoc Chairperson, on the Topic: Cognitive Radio Networks for VoIP Communication. Prof. Iti Saha Misra highlighted the importance of Cognitive Radio Networks for VoIP Communication in a very lucid manner emphasizing importance of VoIP communication over Cognitive Radio in future wireless communication. Students got the opportunity to learn on the cognitive cycles, types of users of CR and various spectrum sensing methods for the design of cognitive radio network. The third lecture was the after lunch session where Industry personal Mr. Anirban Dutta Chowdhury of TCS Innovation Lab, Kolkata on the Topic: Low-cost unobtrusive healthcare using Smartphone and wearable sensors along with in house demonstration. Mr. Anirban DuttaChowdhury, a good researcher in TCS lab delivered lecture on low cost unobtrusive healthcare using Smartphone and wearable sensors along with in house demonstration. It was an interactive and interesting session which described how technology can be used for social welfares and support doctors bringing up a healthy society at minimal expenditure. There were discussions on various applications like oximeter, sphygmomanometer and the various types of new researches on ECG, PPG, PCG, and how Smartphone sensors can be utilized for estimation of blood pressure, heart rate variable, and the statistical phenomenon related to them.

The one day seminar program was a very successful one with 100 participants from the NIT at the level of students, teacher and researchers. The program ended by giving the certificates to the participants. D. 5-Day Workshop on Emerging Trends in Wireless Communications and Networking Organized by IEEE Communication Society, Kolkata Section during 17-21 November, 2015 at the Department of ETCE, Jadavpur University: A close interaction with industry and academics. There was a wonderful program for the 5-day workshop on Emerging Trends in Wireless Communications and Networking. The aim of the workshop was to discuss recent developments, theories and practical

applications based on the latest aspects of wireless communications, including Cognitive Radio Networks, Voice over IP applications and Wireless Body Area Networks, Sensor Networks. A panel of distinguished professionals/ researchers, industry personnel have delivered keynote speeches/invited talks on recent technology trends and advances. Among the local corporate organizations IBM, RS Software, Wipro, BSNL participated in this event. The target participants were the young fresh faculties at the neighborhood Engineering Colleges. There were 20 participants in total. The workshop runs over 5 whole days from 11.30 am to 4.30 pm covering the following topics along with practical and video demonstration. At the end feedback was taken from the participants asking the usefulness of such program and the quality. All of them have given a very high grade for all lectures and selection of recent topics. The participants expressed the requirements of such programs frequently. Being the coordinator of the workshop and the Chairperson of the IEEE ComSoc Chapter, Prof. Iti Saha Misra has delivered the welcome address for the program highlighting the need of such type of program. Dean, FET Prof. Shivaji Bandhyppadhyay, IEEE Kolkata Section vice Chair Prof. Sujit Biswas, ComSOc past Chair Prof. Rabin Nandi and ComSoC Excom Member Prof. Salil Kumar Sanyal have participated in the inaugural session. All of them addressed the participants to highlight the significance of such program along with the necessity to become the active IEEE member. It was decided that ComSOc Chapter will help the interested participants in the membership program through a special program this year in the Month of December.

The 5-day workshop also includes a Research Colloquium for the presentation of research ideas and work by the young scholars and masters’ students. It was a wonderful experience to share the thoughts of experienced professionals, professors with the young to groom them in a proper direction.

E. Laboratory and Industry Interaction: There were special Industry participation programs for the post graduate and PhD research scholars in the Broadband Wireless Communication Laboratory of ETCE Department, Jadavpur University. The main purpose of the program was to involve industry personnel for hand on training in the specific field of research interest and that to handle the high end equipments needed for the research. This year two programs were organized one at Sep 21 and 22 where Mr. Ankur Tyagi of Eigen Technology participated in a training program on Sensor Network. Another was on October 5 and 10, 2015 where Scientech Technology personnel were involved for the training of Software Defined Radio on wireless system.
