Finding a Good Fit BookBy Barbara A. Smith Carolina Forest Elementary Grade 2 The Daily 5

Finding Good-Fit Books…

Think-Pair-ShareHow do you know a book is the right book for you?

How do you know the book isn’t too difficult for you?

• One of the most important things to do to become a better reader is to read “good-fit” books.

The Daily 5

Would you ever wear a pair of shoes that were too large …

or too small?

Would you wear these shoes …

to play football?

Would you wear these shoes

to walk the beach?

No? Then why read a book that doesn’t fit?

Every shoe has a purpose. Can you match these?

Shoe Purpose

Think about the purpose for your book. To write a report on turtles would you read …

or

You’re RIGHT! You want to read

about REAL turtles!

Why do you have these shoesin your closet?

Right! Because you have an interest in

Ballet Soccer

Choose books that you are interested in – everyone likes different things!

• Mysteries• Animals• Poetry• Fairytales• Sports• Space

Make sure that you understand what you are reading

• The elastic hyoid, combined with the fibroelastic tissue on top of the big cats' undivided vocal folds, acts like a slide trombone, enabling the big cats to roar.

and that you know most of the words

• Tigers are the largest wild cat in the world.• They can weigh up to 720 pounds.

I PICK a Good-Fit Book

• I choose a book

• Purpose Why do I want to read it?

• Interest Does it interest me?

• Comprehend Do I understand what I am reading?

• Know I know most of the words

I PICKI

I choose the book

You are responsible and capable of choosing

your own book that is right for you!

Purpose“What is my purpose for

wanting to read the book?”

You should have a purpose when choosing a good-fit book. Is the

purpose for research? Or, are you simply reading for some

fun?

I PICK

Ruby Holler

Because of Winn Dixie

Sharks

Civil War

Interest“Does the book interest

me?”

Do you want a book like the one you just finished? Do you want a mystery? Or are you more interested in learning

about sports? Whatever the book, make sure it is something you would like to

read.

I PICK

Comprehend“Am I understanding what I am reading?”

Whatever book you choose, make sure that you can comprehend it. If you find yourself asking a lot of questions and

things are sort of confusing, then maybe the book isn’t a good-fit book.

I PICK

Know“Do I know the words?”

Whatever book you choose, make sure that you can understand the words. You should know most of the words that you read. If you don’t, then the

book is not a good-fit book.More than 5 words (five finger)
