IV.NORTHERN ENGLISH SETTLEMENTSA. RELIGIOUS MOTIVESB. PILGRIMSC. MAYFLOWER COMPACTD. RELATIONS WITH NATIVES
A. RELIGIOUS MOTIVATION TO LEAVE ENGLAND…
Martin Luther (1517, Wittenberg) starts REFORMATION!
John Calvin’s theology dominates New England. God = ALL knowing, powerful, good man = wicked.
Ideas hitting England when King Henry VIII breaks ties to the Catholic Church (1530)
Doctrine of ELECT/PREDESTINATION
You had to be a “visible saint”
1/7
Not everyone liked Henry’s new church…Puritans-wanted “purification” of the new church--
2/7
King Henry wanted to divorce his wife Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn (he needed a son)
He formed the Church of England (Anglican Church) and made himself head of the Church
A small group known as “separatists” left England and went to Holland. They felt their children were becoming too Dutch and wanted to find a new haven and sought to establish a settlement in the “New World.”
When they made the journey, they became known as
Pilgrims…Sail on MAYFLOWER
Traveled 65 Days, arrive off-course (1620)
Only half of 102 are actually separatists.
One died at sea, one was born “Oceanus”
Did not originally land at Plymouth Rock. Settled outside the jurisdiction the company.

SQUANTO
SQUANTO worked out peace treaty between the local natives and the Pilgrims…it lasted for a while, anyway…
Squanto,a Patuxet Indian, had been kidnapped and taken to Europe (twice) where he learned English. His tribe had been wiped out by disease while he was gone…

NORTHSOUTH
JAMESTOWN AND VA SETTLEMENTS
PILGRIMS AND NEW ENGLAND SETTLEMENTS
WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SOUTHERN AND NORTHERN ENGLISH SETTLEMENTS?
Northern & Southern colonists shared a common language and allegiance to England, but they had
different patterns of settlement, different economies, and different political systems.
The promise of wealth (tobacco) brought settlers to the south, but it was religion that motivated the earliest settlements to the north…
