There are numerous definitions of religion and only a few

are stated here. The typical dictionary definition of reli-

gion refers to a "belief in, or the worship of, a god or

gods" or the "service and worship of God or the super-

natural". However, many writers and scholars have

noted that this basic 'belief in god' definition fails to

capture the diversity of religious thought and experi-

ence.

There is no hope if you don’t have faith.

HOW DO YOU VIEW RELIGION’S EFFECT ON SOCIETY?

Islam is the second largest religion with 1.2

followers, called Muslims. This represents

nearly twenty percent of the world population.

Islam, like Christianity, has several branches.

The Sunni and Shi'ite are the two largest

branches. The Qur'an, or Koran, is the sacred

book of the Islam faith. It is believed to be the

word of Allah, the Arabic word for God, as

spoken to the prophet Muhammad. All Mus-

gion worldwide. More than 2.1 billion

people follow the Christian belief. That

is close to one third of the world popu-

lation. Christianity has dozens of de-

As far as what I am concerned, religion is a huge part of our society. The main

religion is Buddhism. It has a history of 2000 years in China, and each city has a

temple, no matter big or small. Luckily, my hometown Hangzhou, have a

famous temple called Linyin Temple, which is one of the largest and wealthiest

Buddhist temples in China, and contains numerous pagodas and Buddhist

grottoes. The citizens in Hangzhou will always come to the temple to pray,

especially during the exam season and Spring Festival. I remember there is a

time that I went to the temple to pray for our family on the first day of the

Chinese New Year, there are so many people that I can’t even see the Buddha,

which really annoys me. But I know that all of us want to live a healthy and

strong New Year because it’s a brand new start for all of us. Even more, I am so

happy to see that there are much more people at the Hall of the Medicine

Buddha because as for me, keeping healthy is my first goal on my every New

Year’s resolution. Like what Jesus did to heal people’s disease, we all think that

Buddha will help us go through this.
