“We developed our first flatweave floor covering as a heavy weight cloth and the result was so charming we further
developed it for use on a small power loom. This advance meant we could make a product that was indistinguishable from a
similar version that had been made by hand.”
Roger and Fay Oates have been designing and hand producing their uniquely smart, classic rugs, runners and fabrics for the past two and a half decades. They both
studied weaving and woven textiles with some of the leading teachers and educators of the post war craft movement, who themselves had been trained in the twenties
and thirties by the leading pioneers of craft in the early part of the twentieth century. After an art school training, Roger went on to study industrial carpet design and Fay
attended the Royal College of Art to continue her studies in industrial and power woven textiles. They met in London, deciding early on that their focus would be that
of creating their own niche in order to make a beautiful, top-end interior product that merged imagination and creativity with practicality and sound business sense.
When Roger and Fay first discovered a nineteenth century flatweave fragment in the late 1980s, they became determined to reintroduce this type of historic textile by
reinventing it as a new type of decorative floor covering. Their combined skills and eye for colour, texture and pattern led them to create a unique flatweave that could be
produced using an adapted technique on a power loom. This was their real beginning as they had created an authentic product that had the characteristics of
hand weaving, yet was modern in its production method.

“Neither of us actively looked to history or traditional making methods to create our
products: we always looked for the combination of practicality and great looks to achieve the
specific result of creating a small and timeless collection of perfect tailoring.”
Having invented a method by which to produce flatweaves, Roger and Fay evolved and expanded these early weaves into
their first fully formed collection of rugs and runners. While the stripe, whether vivid, graphic or subtle, became the Roger Oates signature, both Roger and Fay continued to experiment in order
to create their first runners and rugs in a Wilton pile in order to balance the collection, suit all tastes and therefore give people
choice. This in turn led them into weaving furnishing fabrics, which again had to fit into their definition of a good interiors
product: that of being both beautiful and useful, but above all else luxurious with the feeling of comfort.

“Your eye can almost feel the texture in the weave before you reach out to touch it.”
Throughout their working life, the idea of staying true to the art of the handmade has been like a mantra to Roger
and Fay. It has informed every turn and task with the result that each item in the collection has the authenticity of
real quality and value to both the eye and the touch. All the flatweaves are woven in England from wool spun in
Yorkshire. The weaving takes place on specially adapted narrow looms to create runners with a clean and finished
selvedge edge. All finishing is done by hand at the Roger Oates headquarters in Herefordshire,
where Roger and Fay continue to expand, adapt and evolve their ideas. TH

“If anything, the Roger Oates signature is the stripe, but a stripe is more than a simple line
because a stripe isn’t a stripe without the colour. A good stripe relies on the balance
and proportion of size of stripe to weight of colour. This sets up the rhythm of a
stripe’s design and what you can do with it subsequently to weave a new design.”
The Roger Oates fabric collection was established in the late 1990s with a textural range of woven linens and
linen/cotton mix textiles. The fabrics have been designed to complement the floorings, continuing the underlying
design ethos of combining texture and colour with quality and timelessness. There are four distinct ranges, each of
which embodies an element of the Roger Oates signature stripe, be that a series of fine or vivid lines, textural weaves
with barely-there runs of colour and silken self-striped sheers in distinctive muted tones, among which, there is
always the rich neutral and bold bright tones.

“All of our new concepts are first woven by hand in the studio – this is essential as it gives us the flexibility to alter and adapt the pattern and change threads and colour as the design emerges from the loom. This literal hands-on
design approach means we are working directly and intimately with the threads and colours
and can make each new design sing.”
The natural evolution from a stripe to a checkerboard design that hovers between that of houndstooth and tartan has added a new and spirited dimension to the collection of stair runners.
Each design is considered for its own merit, whether it is woven as a flatweave or treated to a Wilton finish. The range retains its timeless appeal and remains surprisingly modern by way of the
balance of colour and tone within the graphic nature of all the designs that make a play on the checks and tartans of old.

“We spend a lot of time on colour, using it in different combinations looking for the new hues that emerge as a result of how
you calibrate the weight and balance of the tones, patterns and textures that together
create the overall colour of the weave.”
Having revived the idea of a woven flooring and invented a production process that is indistinguishable from the
hand made, Roger and Fay have spent over two decades perfecting their techniques and designs. The reinvention
of the Venetian flatweave began the series of experiments with colour, pattern and texture that has resulted in a
collection of over one hundred designs. Roger and Fay’s standards of excellence have taken a historic flatweave
from being a relatively humble floor covering to being considered one of today’s must-have design staples
for floors and stairs in this country and across Europe, Scandinavia, North America and Australia.

iconic Venetian flatweave designs created a fresh, new take for a stair runner. The resulting weave is highly textural with a noteable spring to the touch, which is what truly characterizes

The Roger Oates British wool range of classic flatweaves uses only real Shetland wool in six inherent natural colours that range from black to white. The un-dyed Shetland wool, selected by hand, provides exactly the right shades of ivory
whites, dove greys, mink and ebony that together create these smart flatweaves, which embody the Roger Oates
ethos for luxurious simplicity and natural colours. This range of Shetland flatweaves is truly British as every part of the
process from the wool to the weave is made in Britain. Each runner is then hand finished in the Roger Oates studio.

WILTON RUNNERS simple luxury
for modern living
“We have always focused on producing a product that had a specific use within an interior, one that we could make that went well beyond the limits of the hand-
made crafted item, but which retained the essence of authenticity.”
A Wilton carpet is defined by both its weave and pile and all Roger Oates Wiltons are constructed with a
heavily integrated woven pile and base. The dense pile gives these Wiltons their distinguishingly luxurious
appeal. The stair runner designs are highly adaptable, and can be re-worked as bespoke wall-to-wall carpet.
The same strong, graphic approach to colour, line and pattern is used to create this core collection
of traditional runners.

“We have a unique product that we continuously love and enjoy, adapt and
develop in order to remain fresh, relevant and up-to-the-minute.”
The Roger Oates archive forms a rich source of both inspiration and expertise in Venetian flatweave design. If you are interested in commissioning a one-off piece,
Roger Oates offers a custom-made service to bring a personal design to fruition. All existing weave designs can be woven to wider widths or scaled up or down to
suit unusually wide or narrow staircases. Existing Roger Oates designs can be specifically coloured to create
individual, bespoke runners and carpets.

“Flatweaves are wonderfully flexible as they can be made into rugs of almost any size,
adding colour, warmth and softening noise, or laid over hard floors to build up further layers
of texture and interest.”
All the Roger Oates flatweave designs have a repeating design which makes them ideal for joining together to create
a distinctive hand finished area rug that can be made to size. Stripe designs are versatile and can give the illusion
of lengthening or widening a room depending on how the lengths of the runner are put together. Bold, large-scale
designs will be dramatic, while the smaller simpler designs will create a subtle overall texture and pattern. The finish on a rug will also alter its style and the impression it gives a space.
Edges can be finished with a false selvedge or be bound in either contrasting or tonal linen or leather. To maintain a high
level of craftsmanship, all rugs are sewn together and bound by hand in the company’s studios.

“From a traditional French felting technique we devised an alternative application to
make the highly graphic Tapis rug – its appeal lies not only in the boldness of colour
but in its softness underfoot.”
Tapis d’Avignon rugs are made from heavily felted Mouflon wool that feels as soft and indulgent as it looks. It is a highly practical rug as the wool is extremely tough and is resistant to water spills. It can be sized to suit almost any space and there are many colours to choose from giving an extensive
number of colour combinations and checkerboard or stripe designs. All Tapis d’Avignon rugs are made by patch-
working sections together using a decorative joining stitch that is either tonal or in contrast to the main ground colour.
The Tapis is also finished round the edge using a blanket stitch. Tapis rugs can be unashamedly wild and
modern or calming and subtle.

“The beauty of Venetian flatweaves is as much about the quality of their look as it is about their
practicality and flexibility to work within almost any space.”
Roger Oates flatweaves are all woven between 60 and 70cm wide. These are the ideal widths for most stairways and the clean selvedge edge provides a perfect finished edge on stair runners.
The use of stair rods depends on the staircase, and, although not essential to an installation in terms of practicality, in the right
setting they add a decorative finish. Co-ordinate them with door furniture or any other metal work within the area.
The patterned border on the flatweave can easily be taken up and round the landings by way of mitred edges. Quarter and
half landings on stairways can be fitted in the traditional manner in an overlay fashion, where one length of flatweave is laid
perpendicular to the other. Individual widths are hand sewn together imperceptibly, to create large pieces that can be fitted
wall-to-wall and on landings, giving further flexibility in how a space can be treated. For the full range of stair rods

Where is my nearest retailer?
Please see the Where To Buy section on our website which lists local
stockists or call 01531 632718 for more information.
Which width of stair runner should I choose?
We recommend that you have a minimum margin of 5cm either side of
your runner and the edge of your staircase.
I have winding steps.
Can I still have a stair runner?
A flatweave quality is recom-
mended if you have winding steps
as it is supple and flexible unlike
a wilton. In the majority of cases
where you have a minimum of
three winding steps over a 90
degree turn the stripes can be
matched in the crutch of the step
if a flatweave is used. A good
fitter is essential.
How much will I need?
1. For straight steps, measure one riser and one tread to give the
length need for each step. Include the “nose” in the measurement
(see drawing A). Check that all treads and risers on your stairs have the
same measurements.
2. Count steps and check for differing depths.
3. Multiple the number of steps x length needed for each step. If the
steps all have different measurements, you will need to measure each
one individually and add the measurements together.
4. To calculate the quantity needed for winding steps, measure the
distance along the outside perimeter (see drawing B).
5. Measure the final riser of the flight and also add an extra 50cm per
flight to allow for tolerance.
Do I need stair rods?
Stair rods are purely decorative however do add a smart finishing
touch. Please see our stair rod section on our website to view the
different styles available.
What happens on landing areas?
There are various options available. Please see the technical guidance
section on pages 88 to 89 and our website for ideas and inspiration.
What kind of underlay and gripper should be used with my runner?
A good quality rubber crumb and felt underlay is always recommended
for both flatweave and wilton installations. Pin gripper should be used
with a wilton runner and Microplast gripper should be used with a
flatweave runner. If you have a loose runner/rug on a hard floor we
recommend that Anti-slip underlay is used to prevent slippage.
Can I use my own fitter?
Flatweave is a specialised material therefore it is essential that you
employ somebody experienced in fitting the product. Good fitters will
leave you with a high quality installation which will ensure that the
carpet performs better over its lifespan. Ask your local stockist if they
have a portfolio of work that you can have a look at or if they have any
customer references.
What is the lead-time?
Our runners are not mass produced due to the nature of the looms
used and are more often than not woven to order. Please check stock
situations before placing an order. Maximum lead-times, which include
the spinning of the yarns and the dying process together with the actual
weaving, can extend to approximately 10-12 weeks at busy times of
the year.
How do I care for my runner?
Clean regularly with a suction vacuum cleaner to remove surface dirt.
If any spillages occur, act quickly. Blot the liquid with a soft, colourless
absorbent cloth then dab with a clean cloth dampened with upholstery
shampoo solution. Rinse and blot dry. Protective treatments such as
Scotchgard can be applied after installation. The WoolSafe
Organisation list a number of cleaning products and methods
suitable for wool products on their website www.woolsafe.org
What is the life expectancy of my stair runner?
It is impossible to guarantee how long your stair runner will last as they
wear very differently dependent on the individual household and layout
of the staircase. Life expectancy is also affected by the quality of the
fitting and type of underlay used. A rubber crumb and felt underlay
similar in height to the gripper rod should always be used. To prolong
the life, insist on a shoe-free policy and ensure the installation is
completed to a high standard. Please note that our runners are only
recommended for domestic settings.
Can I request a sample?
Yes. You can order samples online or please call one of our showrooms
on 020 7351 2288 or 01531 632718. Cuttings are free of charge or larger
samples are available for a refundable deposit.
Can I have a special colour?
We offer a bespoke design and colour service for minimum quantities.
Please speak to a member of our sales team who can advise further.
Do you have a returns policy?
Please consult our full Terms and Conditions of Business on the website
for further information.
We cannot accept returns on custom runners or stair rods. We also
do not accept returns on pre-fabricated areas such as seamed wall
to wall landings.
