Introduction
Being an NSS Volunteer I am able to understand the problems of society better.
National Participated in involve community development, institutional training,
adventure activities and taking part in youth exchange programs. Some think that
these activities may have an adverse impact on the academic requirements of
students, but studies have shown that there is a positive correlation between
academic performance and extracurricular activities. In my belief more students are
coming forward to join such activities. “NSS is not just drills, exercises and tests of
endurance. It conditions the emotions of students and shapes positive attitude."
With College NSS Volunteers during Inaugural Drug De-Addiction Marathon
in Abhipur Village, Dist. Mohali
NSS is engaged in grooming the youth into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The scheme has enhanced my understanding about the problems of the people and the
issues facing by the community.

NSS activities have improved my leadership qualities. The consistent involvement
in social service activities has readied me to face the challenges in life successfully.
“I have been given more responsibilities in organizing events at college and at
university level. This improved my level of confidence".
“NSS has helped me to improve my communication skills and I
have gained confidence to face any personality test.”
I also got an opportunity to enjoy expensive activities such as trekking, skiing and
mountaineering, as the government is spending large amounts of money on making
the cadets a complete human being.
“NSS has totally change me from an immature brat to a mature gentlemen”. The
three year service to this fantastic scheme has totally change me and my life. With
three years of grooming and experience.
Apart from this we the NSS volunteer of Indo Global Colleges, Abhipur have
devoted our self in being a part of noble cause since the day of our inauguration of
NSS in Punjab Technical University, we have been proved as the supporting hand
for the welfare of the citizens living in our adopted village, Chandigarh and nearby
areas. We have been working on diversified fields like ranging from guiding
villagers and sarpanch for various government schemes , cleanliness drive , need of
education , making them aware of evil and chronic diseases, drug de-addiction
campaign, fight against swine-flu , immunization, tree plantation , blood camp , ENT
Camps for villagers , Marathon, cloth donation, aids for flood victims etc. we the
NSS Volunteers of Indo Global Colleges and Punjab Technical University has
decided to do something for our society because
“It’s just not about living, but living a healthy and

AWARENESS AGAINST CANCER AND HEPATITIS
(23rd to 29th December 2012. Location: Mastuana Sahib, Sangrur)
Purpose: To aware & guided families about the corrective measures to save the lives
from deadly diseases like Cancer & Hepatitis in Malwa Region of Punjab.
Before the beginning of this camp, volunteers were trained by Dr Jagmeet Bawa
from PTU and by medical experts, how to interact with the people of villages &
counsel the people about causes of cancer and hepatitis etc.
In this survey all the houses in the respective villages were covered by the NSS teams in support of the respective Sarpanchs & other renowned personnel of respective village.
More than 3000 families were guided about the corrective measures to save the lives from these deadly diseases. I had tears in my eyes when I saw the condition of families in Malwa region of Punjab. It really hurted to know when the youngest member of family die due to this deadly disease which can be prevented by taking some precautions.
In order to make people aware of the problems prevailing in the society; the students also displayed the enactment of different plays & Nukkad Nataks highlighting the social evils such as female foeticide, drug addiction, dowry system etc.

ANNUAL STATUS OF EDUCATION REPORT
(ASER 2014)
District Head: Hoshiarpur; Master Trainer at Rayat and Bahra
Institute of Engineering and Nanotechnology for Women
(Duration 1st September 2014 to 30th September 2014)
The ASER survey is conducted in almost every rural district in India with the help of local
organizations and institutions including universities and colleges, non-governmental
organizations, self-help groups, youth clubs, government departments, District Institute of
Education and Training (DIET) colleges, etc. On average ASER reaches over 560 districts
each year, surveying an average of 650,000 children in more than 16,000 villages across
the country. For ASER volunteers to succeed in this endeavour, they need to be trained
rigorously.
A notable feature of ASER 2014 was ASER’s partnership with 243 DIETs across 12 states.
DIETs provide academic training and resource support to teachers and schools in their
districts. These institutions are also responsible for the in-service and pre-service training
of teachers, as well as the professional development of the education department staff at
the block and district level who in turn support schools through monitoring and mentoring.
The ASER-DIET partnership provided a unique opportunity to involve close to 14,000
future teachers in assessing the learning levels of children in rural India. The district-level
training workshop for the survey offered DIET students an opportunity to understand the
ASER survey process, tools, and the importance of building a child friendly environment
before testing, as well as fundamental concepts of assessment and how to communicate the
findings of a simple assessment.

The ASER training process gives volunteers the skills needed to survey a village, assess
children’s learning levels reliably and record the information accurately. ASER Centre
follows a rigorous three-tier training model that consists of:
Standardization in training and survey is extremely important in order to ensure that the
data collected is reliable and valid across districts and states. For this purpose, ASER
Centre ensures that the guidelines and instructions for the trainings delivered at all three
tiers are kept clear and consistent so that each participant is able to conduct the survey
identically.
I got an opportunity from Indo Global Colleges participated in the camp held
at SUSCET College from 10th October 2014 to 15th October 2014.
The training was aimed at making the volunteers aware of how to conduct
the training as well as the ASER survey as I had to go to different districts
of Punjab to give training to volunteers of a particular college in the assigned
district.
The camp started on 10th Oct. In the beginning I had been briefed up about ASER
and schedule of the camp was discussed.
State-level Training: These trainings are conducted in every state just before
the district-trainings.
The national training process is replicated in the state-level trainings. The main
objective of this training is to prepare the Master Trainers as lead trainers so that
they can successfully train the volunteers in their own districts.
State level trainings are also scheduled for 5 to 6 days with 3 to 4 days of
classroom sessions and 2 days of field visits.
More than 900 Master Trainers participated in ASER 2014.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
PUNJAB TECHNICAL

28 Er. Abu Sufiyan Indo Global College of Engineering
The structure of state-level trainings is kept as close as possible to that of the
national training. State level trainings too have five major components:
o Classroom sessions
o Field visits,
o Mock trainings,
o Quizzes
o District level planning.
Performance in mock trainings, field visits and quiz results are analyzed to
identify under-confident Master Trainers, who are either replaced, re-trained
and/or provided with additional support during district trainings. It is mandatory
for all participants to be present on all days of the training. Any participant who
is not present for all sessions of the training cannot qualify as a Master Trainer
for ASER.
District-level Training: The district-level training is the last tier of the training
for the ASER survey. The Master Trainers, trained in the state-level training,
now train the volunteers who are to conduct the survey in the villages.
During piloting with volunteers as a Master Trainer in a government school, Hoshiarpur

The district-level training is typically a three-day workshop. Like state-level
trainings, key elements of district trainings include classroom sessions, field
practice sessions and a quiz. Typically, in most districts, volunteers scoring low
on the quiz are either replaced or are paired with stronger volunteers to carry out
the survey.
After the district-level training, the survey is conducted by a team of two
volunteers in each village.
Monitoring of trainings: Specific steps are taken to ensure that key aspects of
training are implemented across all state-level and district-level trainings.
• State-level trainings are usually attended and monitored by the head of
the Pratham program in the state as well as members of the central ASER
team.
• To support district-level activities of ASER including district-level
training, in most states, a call Centre is set up to monitor and support
ASER teams. A trained call Centre person interacts with Master Trainers
on a daily basis to ensure that they complete all basic processes during
training, survey and recheck.
• In all district-level trainings, records are maintained for each ASER
volunteer. These records contain attendance data for each day of training
and quiz marks of all volunteers. The data in this sheet is used extensively
for volunteer selection for the ASER survey.
Monitoring and recheck activities are an integral part of the ASER process. Each
year ASER processes are reviewed and concerted attempts are made to improve the
quality of the data collected.
The monitoring-recheck system in ASER 2014 comprised three processes:
Call Centre Monitoring: Almost all states had a ‘call centre’ which made phone calls
to all districts at every stage of the survey process - before and during district-level
trainings, during the survey and during the recheck period. Information regarding
the progress of these processes was collected during the calls. This helped to identify
domains or locations requiring immediate corrective action or additional support
from the ASER state teams.
Field Monitoring: The ASER survey in each district was led by at least two
Master Trainers who underwent training at the state level. Part of their
responsibility is to ‘monitor’ surveying teams who require additional support
during the actual field survey. Approximately 70% of districts in ASER 2014
had a 2 weekend survey, i.e. half the villages (15 villages out of 30) were
surveyed over one weekend and the other half (remaining 15 villages) were
surveyed over the second weekend.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
PUNJAB TECHNICAL
UNIVERSITY
30 Er. Abu Sufiyan Indo Global College of Engineering
Due to this phasing of the survey, Master Trainers were able to monitor at least 4
villages in a district over the 2 weekends.
Recheck: Information collected during the ASER survey is verified at various
levels in a process known as ‘recheck’. In ASER 2014, there were three levels
of rechecks. The first level was done by Master Trainers immediately after the
village survey. Second, sample-based rechecks were conducted by ASER state
team members. A third level involved ASER Centre teams who moved across
states to do cross-checks and field verification of data. In addition, an external
recheck was also conducted in 9 states across India by select organisations in
each state.
The following are details of recheck activities conducted in ASER 2014:
Desk and Phone Recheck by Master Trainers: On the completion of the
survey in a district, the Master Trainers conducted desk rechecks of the
survey booklets received for all the surveyed villages. In addition, the Master
Trainers telephoned at least 8 out of 20 surveyed households in each village.
These procedures enabled quick identification of villages which were not
surveyed correctly. These villages were then rechecked in person by the
Master Trainers.
Field Recheck by Master Trainers: Based on the information collected
from the desk and phone rechecks, villages were identified for field recheck.
In each such village, 50% of all surveyed households were rechecked.
This process involved verification of the key parameters of the survey –
sampling, selection of children and testing.
Field Recheck by Others: Senior staff from NGO partners, professors from
college partners and other Pratham and ASER staff conducted additional
field rechecks where it was required.
Field Recheck by ASER State Teams: Based on the performance of the
Master Trainers and the surveyors, the ASER state teams also rechecked
some selected villages.
Cross-State Field Rechecks: Finally as the last stage to strengthen the
quality control process, ASER state team members switched states and
conducted a cross-state recheck. Some districts were chosen purposively and
others were selected randomly. The process of the recheck was the same as
the Master Trainer field recheck.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
PUNJAB TECHNICAL
UNIVERSITY
31 Er. Abu Sufiyan Indo Global College of Engineering
External Recheck: In ASER 2014, colleges and NGOs across India
conducted a field recheck in randomly selected districts and villages that
were surveyed. This external recheck was conducted in Assam, Gujarat,
Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu
and Uttar Pradesh.
In all, approximately 56% of villages surveyed in ASER 2014 were either field
monitored or field rechecked by Master Trainers, ASER State Teams and others

FIGHT AGAINST DRUG ABUSE
Date: 9th Feb 2015 to 12th Feb 2015.
Village: Abhipur
“Punjabio Jaago, Nashey Tyaago”
Purpose: To Spread Awareness against Drug Abuse in youth and Villagers.
Drug abuse has become a major social problem over the years and Punjab region is
highly affected. To combat this problem, Indo Global Colleges NSS Volunteers
have taken the initiative to launch relentless drive against this evil and aware the
youth of Punjab through various skits and songs on Drug De Addiction.
Drug addiction is a huge problem in Punjab. According to a recent United Nations report,
Punjab has the second highest number of drug addicts in India. According to Guru Nanak
University, 73.5% of those aged 16-35 re drug addicts. Citizens of Punjab are addicted to
opium, heroin, painkillers, amphetamines and more. So to save our loved ones and Youth
of India, 40 NSS Volunteers actively participated in drug de-addiction campaign from 9th
February 2015 to 12th February 2015.
I was a part of this campaign in Dasuan, Gocha, Palanpur, Khubehri, Majra

I saw a MINI INDIA in this camp. I got an opportunity to present a BHARAT.
I performed a patriotic song from Border Film “Sandesey aatey he” which was
dedicated to the real heroes of life which brought tears to the eyes of everyone
present there. I was appreciated by Local M.L.A of Majuli Island.
I also participated in a desi dhamakedar performance i.e. Bhangra, after the
song performance, the hall was blown up with cacophony and balle balle.
Although I was performing Bhangra for first time but the dedication for
representing Punjab was so high that I performed it very well. It was one of
the best cultural item of that day and all credit goes to Mr. Ajay Kumar
for his motivation and choreography.
On 29th we went to tea gardens of Dibrugarh University and Dibrugarh

HIGH ALTITUDE TREKKING AND SKIING CAMP
(Date: 23rd Feb 2015 to 4th March 2015 Location: Narkanda, Himachal)
Purpose: Skiing camp aimed at acclimatizing people from plains to the climatic
conditions of hilly areas.
PTU NSS Volunteers at Narkanda
On 22nd February 2014, 10 PTU NSS volunteers and one program officer
Mr. Ajay Kumar started for Camping at Dhomri(Narkanda, Shimla, HP) on
a stormy day ! It's a popular place to train skiing enthusiasts from various
parts of India. Situated at an attitude of 2708 meters on the Hindustan Tibet
road (NH - 22). On reaching Narkanda on 23rd February 2014 early in the
morning.
The strength of the High Altitude Trekking and skiing camp was 20
volunteers (10 boys and 10 girls) and 2 program officers (one each from both
universities). After registration we were given our kits i.e skii’s, ski boot,
sticks, sleeping bags etc. after that we had been taken to Dhomri slope.
After the introductory lecture I and other volunteers had been told how to do
Skiing:
One of the instructors told us the key to walk by wearing six feet long
boots i.e. by giving pressure on the shin bone and putting the body weight

forward. After few rounds I got the technique of walking with 6 feet long
boots.
Post lunch we were taught about fall and recovery techniques and the day
one ended with walking with skies, fall and recovery. Skiing is a massive
confidence sport though, so take your time learning and don't rush straight
up to the top of the mountain, because getting out of control and stacking it
at high speed can put people off... After that we all came back to regional
centre.
In the evening a lecture on skies architecture was given in which we were
taught about type of skies and its history.
On second day, I with other volunteers moved out for some warm up and
physical exercise at 6 a.m. and after physical exercise duties like quarter
master, equipment in charge, senior, row in charge were given to volunteers
from both universities. After that we came back to regional center at 7 a.m.
and had our breakfast. At 9 a.m. we went to dhomri slope which was about
1 km from regional center. On reaching there we were taught about strapping
technique i.e. how to climb on slope with skies. We were taught with various
techniques as follows-
Learning to stand up, turn where you want and stop when necessary are all I
needed to be able to do to enjoy myself on the slopes!
What I learnt:-
Moving the skis- The skis were clamped
to the boots which should be on the feet.
So if one turns the foot to the right then
the ski will also turn to the right. This
principle doesn't change - one should
point the skis where he wants to go
primarily by turning the feet!
Stance- The way one stands on skis has
a massive impact on the likelihood of
ones falling over when one starts
sliding. If the feet are shoulder width
apart one has a better base of support
than if the feet are next to each other.
The most stable position when skiing is
to have the feet shoulder width apart,
with the toes pointing inwards and heels
apart, so that skis make a triangle/V-
shape (like the shape of a slice of
pizza!). This position (snow plough)
gives a solid base, even on the move! Wearing Skiing Kit

UNIVERSITY

Bend the ankles, knees and waist slightly, keeping the arms out wide (as if
one is about to hug someone!) and feel the weight evenly on the balls of the
feet and heels. Try this at a standstill before one starts moving.
Third day started with same schedule of warm up and physical exercises and strapping
on slope until we got the technique of climbing on slope by wearing skies. And few more
Useful Exercise- On a gentle slope, going straight down the hill, try making
the plough wider at the back until one slows down, then narrower at the back
to speed up and then bigger again until one stops. The ski tips should stay
the same width apart (5-10cm) throughout.
Turning- On steeper slopes the above exercise will slow you down but won't
stop you! You have to defy gravity by turning your skis so they face across the
hill and not down it! To turn your skis, all you have to do is turn your feet so they
point in the direction you wish to travel! This is easiest if you stay in the snow
plough position, as it is very stable and keeps your speed under control. So, whilst
keeping your skis in the snow plough/Vshape, gently turn your feet until your
skis point across the hill and come to a stop.
On Fourth day we were house arrest because of heavy rainfall and the condition of
snow was not good for skiing. Thatr day we got a lecture by Mr. Laal chand on
history of skiing and regional center.
Mr. Jagmeet Bawa arrived to see and motivate volunteers. His session was
really a motivating one and he’s one of the most inspiring personalities I
have ever met in past few years of my life. There is always something new
in his charismatic motivating sessions which inspire me to dedicate myself
to NSS, social service and finding my true spirit.
After dinner all the PTU volunteers gathered in one of the rooms for group
discussion which was led by our program officer Mr. Ajay Kumar In the
session we discussed about today’s youth and society problems , our
personal matters and its spiritual solutions , human values and personal
ethics. I personally like to thank Mr. Ajay Kumar for such a wonderful
session of diagnosing youth problems and guiding them on right path. He is
one of the best program officers and youth officers of our university. I
personally gain lot of things from his personality and behavior.

Fifth day started with same schedule and we were taken to dhomri slope for skiing
lessons and some useful exrcises were taught which are as follows:
Useful Exercise- On a gentle slope, pick a marker such as a pylon or some
poles and, when you get to it/then, slowly begin to turn your feet to the left or
right, and keep turning them from foot to foot as well as turning them! To turn
to the right, put more weight on your left foot and to turn to the left, put more
weight on your right foot.
Useful Exercise- Abandon your poles somewhere safe and put both your
hands on the knee that is furthest down the hill... So, when you turn to the
right, put both hands on your left knee and push it forwards slightly. Once
your speed is under control and you are ready to turn left, stand up tall
pushing on both feet, put your hands on your head and then slowly bring
both hands down to your right knee and push it forwards. Continue doing
this for every turn until you can feel the skis turning quickly.
If you ever end up on a steep slope that intimidates you, then this is an
excellent exercise to help get you down! If you use the above exercises and
get some good mileage then you would really start to enjoy yourself and be
able to venture on to steep blues!

On sixth day there was 2 feet high snow fall and the roads were blocked
completely so regional center recommended us that none should go to slope
because slope condition is not good for skiing.
Whole day we passed our time by involving in group discussions and group
activities and snow fights. The evening scenes were perfectly endowed with
sheer natural beauty I was feeling like I am in a scenery. The view was a
breathtaking moment as it was the heavenly experience. Narkanda left me
spell-bound with the bewitching views of the snow-capped mountains and
the moonlight,
Going Parallel: Skiing with your skis parallel at all times looks more flash and
gives you more control and a tighter turning circle on steep slopes. It can feel
quite unstable at first, so here are some ways of gradually bringing your skis
together without losing control!
Top Tip- If you make sure your chin is over your downhill/outside foot your
weight will be in the right place!
On the way to Dhomri Slope
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

Useful Exercise: Find a slope you feel comfortable on and stop near the top.
Make a big sweeping right turn at a moderate speed in the snow plough
position. Towards the end of the turn, as your skis begin to turn across the
hill, make sure all your weight is on your left foot, and gently lift the back of
your right ski up off the snow for a second, before putting it back down
parallel to your left ski, so that both skis are roughly shoulder width apart.
Keep turning both skis across the hill until you slow down and stop. Then
Try a sweeping turn to the left, starting with your skis in the snow plough shape and
finishing with them parallel. If you find it difficult to pick the ski up then just make
sure all your weight is on the downhill/outside ski. Once you have the hang of
bringing your skis parallel to finish the turn, it's time to keep them parallel to start
the turn. Skiing is meant to encourage and develop adventure ability. This training
helped us in combating the adversities of a snow covered zone while increasing the
self-stamina and ability to fight. After this session we came back to regional center
for lunch and after lunch the generator lift was switched on for higher slopes. The
technique is to hold the rope and put your weight forward and on your shin bone.
And on reaching the desirable height or final point made reverse Plough/V-
shape/pizza slice shape or just fall down towards the slope and then recover.
On 8th day we practice the same generator lift in the morning session and we practiced
whatever had been taught to us till now. After one or two rounds our trainer Mr.
Bhupinder taught us how to come up from uphill to downhill in a row/train. It was
really a great fun to come up with your team in a row with control to downhill. It was
really a great experience for me.
In second session we were taught few more tips and techniques and about advance courses
and its uses in military and disaster conditions and disaster management by Mr. Laal
Chand. Although he was too old by age but too young by his spirit. When most of the
people get retired b his age, he teaches youngsters whatever he knows throughout his life.
On 9th day it was time for the test of the things we had been taught in past few days at

and Colleges of Tri City, also covering many Gurudwaras, temples, Community
Centres, Housing Societies, Corporate Offices and even some retail outlets. In all,
150 Drop Boxes have been placed at such donation points to facilitate the donor to
give their contribution of warm clothes. Receiving a whopping collection of over
500 pairs of old and woollen clothes, the team of Indo Global students have
planned distributions once every week, namely 25 December followed by 01
January 2013, 07, 11 and 12 January 2013 respectively.
While the country is marching on to progress and many lucky people are busy
planning New Year celebrations, there is also a large number of miserably poor
people who are shivering in the extreme cold and for whom this is the toughest
part of the year as their survival itself is at stake. People do not die of cold, but
people die from exposure to cold, because they do not have sufficient warm
clothing to protect themselves.
In Such harsh weather, it is very pitiable to see the poor in torn, threadbare and
tattered clothing which is a clear sign of abject poverty. Sometimes the need for
clothing is more acute than requirement of food, because even a poor man wishes
to cover himself first.
Understanding this acute need, Project Vastra Arpan being done the youngsters
from Indo Global Colleges is indeed worthy of praise. Ashok Batra Manager

project says that every human being has a right to dignified life; and clothing and
dignity are very much co related. Quoting his own experience when his wife and
he rummaged through their wardrobe to discard clothes they have not used for
over a year, he was shocked to pile up over 30 items. This clearly shows how
many clothes can be collected and distributed to the needy on a regular basis.
Speaking on dignity of giving, D N Basu Technical Director of Simplex
Infrastructure, another contributor to this Project, says that the focus while giving
donations should be on the receiver rather than on the giver, although focussing on
the giver may motivate others also to donate but higher focus on the needy can
highlight their plight so that long term solutions could be worked out. R. Panickar
Director General Indo Global Colleges sums it up stating that for the poor on the
street, Clothing is shelter and this is the least that anyone can give to the poor and
needy in such harsh winter days.
Lauding the exemplary efforts of the students, Sukhdev Kumar Singla Chairman
Indo Global Colleges said that the poor living in unimaginable and inhuman
conditions suffer the most in winter due to extreme cold. Such activities by the
youth develop a human side which is very essential for them to live a life of
progress, prosperity and harmony. Every year we donate cloths to poor.
