“When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” The image of the monk with ten fingers blazing fills me with longing for a more authentic faith. But it’s also intimidating. To live that kind of passion means surrendering the modest but satisfying route I’ve taken this far. It’s much less demanding to be the sort of Christian who goes to church, makes charitable contributions, prays for peace, and then returns to the real world to do my chores and watch Netflix. I was bred to be a law-abiding citizen and a good Catholic, but not a hero or a saint. The fingers blazing is what Frances Cabrini had when she took perilous ocean voyages to minister to unwelcome Italian Americans consigned to urban slums and rural coal mines. Hands-on-fire describes Francis Xavier Seelos, who remained in New Orleans to care for yellow fever victims long after most citizens abandoned the city. Katherine Drexel was a human flame when we insisted black lives matter and Native American lives matter, in a nation just a few steps beyond the Civil War and the Trail of Tears. Who will embrace the vocation of fire in this generation? The defense of the good-enough Christian crumbles every Pentecost. What will you do to set the world ablaze with truth?

Pentecost The Lord is not risen from the dead until He imparts the Holy Spirit to the disciples. This is what we celebrate today. God always works through the Spirit. Pentecost is the conclusion of the nine-day Novena (nine days from the Ascension to Pentecost). It is in this emptiness of the novena and absence of God that our faith is born as we await the gifts and fruits of the Spirit. The Spirit gives balance to the doctrine of God, the water of the one baptism equalizes relationships. The wind, the icon of the Spirit, is the oldest of all things.

Prayers Sammy Fratto, 75, died on May 6th. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Vincent’s on Tuesday, May 22nd at 11:00 am. Rosary at 10:30 am. Luncheon in Reedy Hall. Burial at Mt. Calvary. Three sisters are Margaret, Jeanne, Theresa. We commend these who have died to the mercy of the Lord, asking the Lord to bring them safely into His Kingdom of Peace.

Confirmation at St. Vincent’s on Thursday evening this week, May 24th, at 7:00 pm. Confirmation is the confirmation of something, our baptism into the People of God and our confirmation into the Community of the Faithful. Our spirits are to be informed by the Holy Spirit. Best wishes to those receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. May they find peace in the Faith, consolation and strength.

A message from Fr. Heuberger / Mensaje del Padre Heuberger

Dear Faithful of the Archdiocese of Portland, Beginning on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ this year (June 3, 2018), Archbishop Sample has determined that during the celebration of Holy Mass, after the Lamb of God, the faithful will kneel.

This change will unite us with the Universal Church, the majority of the Dioceses in the United States and the other diocese (Baker) in the State of Oregon. More importantly, it will aid in the reverent participation of the Holy Mass and increase our devotion to the Holy Eucharist. The current General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states under the section regarding Movement and Postures that: “The faithful kneel after the Agnus Dei unless the diocesan Bishop determines otherwise.” [43] Previously, the Archdiocese had instructed that the faithful remain standing after the Lamb of God. [The General Instruction on the Roman Missal, 2000 Revisions and Adaptations for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon.] After the Lamb of God, the faithful should remain kneeling until they move from their place to receive Holy Communion. The tradition of remaining kneeling after the reception of Holy Communion until the priest has returned to his seat is to be commended.

Those who cannot kneel due to infirmity or other impediment should be seated so as to not impede the view of those who kneel.

A HUGE Thank You to our Youth Nigh Leader-ship team for their year of service! There were 15 teens, 3 adults and 3 seminarians this year. They came early and stayed late each Wednesday and came once a month for a planning meeting. They led small groups, games, teachings and prayers. We could not do what we do without all of them! This Sunday is our Closing Leadership Retreat where we will pray together, evaluate the year and celebrate! Confirmation Rehearsal – THIS Monday, May 21st, at 6 pm with your Sponsors. The Sacrament of Confirmation for our high school students will be THIS Thursday, May 24th, at 7 pm. We have 58 youth being confirmed this year. Please pray for them in their final days of preparation.

UN ENORME ¡Gracias a nuestro equipo de Lideres Juvenil por su año de servicio! Hubo 15 adolescentes, 3 adultos y 3 seminaristas este año. Llegaron temprano y se quedaron hasta tarde cada miércoles y vinieron una vez al mes para una reunión de planificación. Dirigieron pequeños grupos, juegos, enseñanzas y oraciones. ¡No podríamos hacer lo que hacemos sin todos! ¡Este domingo es nuestro Retiro de Liderazgo de Clausura donde oraremos juntos, evaluaremos el año y celebraremos!

Queridos fieles de la Arquidiócesis de Portland, A partir de la solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo este año (3 de junio de 2018), el Arzobispo Sample ha determinado que durante el celebración de la Santa Misa, después del Cordero de Dios, los fieles se arrodillarán.
