This audio talk had me laughing out loud as Jeff shares his personal suffering and gives us 15 steps to make any suffering we have spiritual. I really encourage you to give yourself the 55 minutes of joy. Suffering is a mystery we all face at some time in our lives. Whether it is physical, emotional, or spiritual, it will test our faith. Internationally known speaker Jeff Cavins shares personal insights he gained through his own physical pain. He shows us how we can join our suffer-ings with those of Jesus on the cross, bringing renewed meaning to the suffering we experience in our lives.

RCIA has begun but it is not too late for you to join the sessions. They are on Tues-day evenings at 7pm until 8:30pm. Interest-ed in becoming Catholic? Inquiry ses-sions have begun. To register or find out more about the process please call 503-654-5449 or email Pat at [email protected]. Adult Confirmation: If you are an adult who has not received this sacrament, Archbishop Sample invites you to prepare for the celebration of Adult Confirma-tion. Adult confirmation will be celebrated by the Archbishop at the Cathedral. If you would like to participate and need more information and to register for the reception of the sacrament please call or email Pat; [email protected] or 503-654-5449. More About Adult Confirmation: Have you ever been asked to be a godparent and found out you were not eligible because you have not received the sacrament of Confirmation, or would like to be a lector or Eucharistic Minister at church and have found out you are not eligible because you have not received the sac-rament of Confirmation? The sacrament of Confirmation completes the sacraments of Initiation. As the Catechism article #1285 states: “a reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is neces-sary for the completion of baptismal grace. For the sac-rament of Confirmation, {the baptized} are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.” If you are an adult who has not received this sacrament, our Archbishop invites you to prepare for the celebration of Adult Confirmation in May at the Cathedral. If you would like to participate and need more information and to register for the reception of the sacrament please call or email Pat; [email protected] or 503-654-5449.

Liturgy Corner compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook

The famous fourth-century theologian, Augus ne of Hippo, once prayed to God, “You have formed us for yourself, and our hearts are restless ll they find rest in you” (Confessions, 1.1.1). Today’s First Read-ing is a prayer straight from Jeremiah’s rest-less heart. God told him to deliver a message of disaster on Jerusalem, and he did as he was told, but where did it get him? Pashhur, the priest in charge of the Temple, punished him by pu ng him in the stocks near the Temple so that every passerby could jeer at him and harass him. This is the context for his vociferous complaint that God duped him (in Hebrew pathah, meaning “to seduce” or “to deceive”). As distressed as he is, he says that he cannot stop himself from responding to God’s call to prophesy. What Jeremiah learns, Jesus states explicitly in today’s Gos-pel. To follow Him is to take up a cross, to de-ny yourself—your priori es, preferences, and comforts. It is to be willing to give it all up, even life itself, for the sake of His gospel. As Paul says in today’s Epistle, we have to join ourselves to the Passion of Christ, to offer our bodies—our whole beings—as living sac-rifices to God. By His Cross, Jesus has shown us what Israel’s sacrifices of animals were meant to teach—that we owe to God all that we have. The Psalm and Second Reading point the way forward: “cling fast” to the Lord, surrender yourself to God’s grace and you will find peace.

“Catholic Charities USA - the national agency of Catholic Charities around the country - is leading the Church's response to the hurricane efforts. They are assessing the situation, accepting donations, and working closely with Catholic Charities in the Archdio-cese of Galveston/Houston. They've asked for people to do the following: Pray: God of hope and mercy, we lift up to you all victims of Hurricane Harvey, and those responding with assistance and aid. Protect all who are in any form of danger; provide practical help to all those in need; strengthen the weary; console the grieving and

heal the suffering; and bless those engaged in disaster relief efforts with safety and courage. Help all people of goodwill to respond with compassion and generous hearts. Amen. Give: Help relief efforts in wake of Hurricane Harvey by texting CCUSADISASTER to 71777. You can also give by calling 1-800-919-9338, visiting www.catholiccharitiesusa.org or by mail: PO Box 17066 Baltimore, MD 21297-1066 (put "Hurricane Harvey" in the memo line of the check). Funds raised will go towards local Catholic Charities agencies' efforts to assist families and individuals with shelter, food, and other immediate and long-term recovery needs. At this time, Catholic Charities Oregon does not have the infrastructure or capacity to collect, store and send donated items to the victims in Texas. Monetary gifts are needed most. Please consider making a financial gift directly to Catholic Charities USA to assist their effort in aiding our neighbors in the Houston area.”

St. Vincent de Paul Update 1. We are in need of empty one dozen egg cartons. You can bring them to the church office or put them in the food collection box. 2. If you think you are not doing anything to help your fellow man, check this out! One of our clients, whom we have helped for the past 10 years, recently moved from the apartments at the end of our (25th Ave) street, due to rent increase. She only wanted food. One of our volunteers took her food, got many ‘thank you’s’ for that day and had nothing but good things to say about the quality, quantity and the professional way she was treated. And...he got a hug! I have since told her, that if Christ the King doesn’t help her good enough just call us. Thank you, Good People, for your continued support!! Yours in Christ, Rick President
