Meet our SJB School Staff for 2016-2017 The community of St. John the Baptist is truly excited to be welcoming back Dr. Angela Gomez, who is al-ready blossoming in her role as principal. She has returned to St. John’s after previously being a part of this community for seven years and has been working hard getting everything ready for the upcoming school year. We are also excited about the new additions to our faculty this year: Melissa Carrillo will be our new Spanish teacher; Elizabeth Danna, 3rd grade; Cheryl Biehl will be our learning specialist and librarian; and Anna Baxter is our new preschool assistant. At the first faculty meeting of the year, Dr. Gomez posed a question to the staff: What does this school look like and what should it look like? Overwhelmingly, the staff reply was “family.” One new teacher commented that being with this group of teachers already feels like fam-ily-as if we were sitting around the dinner table, easily collaborating with one another. Coincidentally, the theme of the year is “SJB is my family.” Students, teachers and parents are working together to achieve common goals. St. John’s will continue to lead the way as a one-to-one Apple technology school, and teach-ers are dedicating professional learning time to the 6 + 1 Writing Traits program that will allow teachers to better teach, model, and asses writing. Teachers will be providing students with a multitude of instruction and providing positive/constructive feedback that will help the students attain mastery. St. John’s faculty is excit-ed to take on the new challenges of the year ahead and work as a “family.”

En el Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús se dirige a la multitud y les habla del discipulado. Jesús explica que, cuando se trata de hacer una elección para el Reino de Dios, nada puede interponerse en el camino. Cuando Jesús se describe a "odiar" al padre y a la madre, él no está hablando de sentimientos. Más bien, él está haciendo hincapié firmemente que la elección de ser un discípulo significa que todo lo demás en la familia, dinero, su propia vida, deben venir en se-gundo lugar. Nuestro Señor nos está diciendo por adelantado el sacrificio que se necesita. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus turns to the crowds and speaks to them of discipleship. Jesus explains that, when it comes to making a choice for the Kingdom of God, nothing can get in the way. When Jesus describes “hating” one’s father and mother, he is not talking about feelings. Rather, he is emphasizing very strongly that choosing to be a disciple means that everything else—family, money, your own life—must come sec-ond. Our Lord is telling us upfront the sacrifice it will take. His words aren't addressed to His chosen few, the Twelve, but rather to the "great crowds" - to "anyone," to "whoever" wishes to be His disciple. Wisdom can be an elusive element in making human choices. The wisdom in Jesus’ teaching is twofold. First, those choosing to follow Jesus need practical wisdom. They will have to leave behind whatever distracts them from accepting the mission Jesus’ desires for us. We will need to discern what it will take for us to “finish the work” of discipleship, as workers on a construction project. The second wisdom is a deeper sense of com-mitment, a choice that will mean following Jesus as our first priority in life and relationship. The word hating that appears in the gospel should not be understood in the same sense that we associate with despising an-other. Jesus is impressing upon his listeners and us that following him is a radical choice, and will take great spiritual courage. That only makes His call all the more stark and uncompromising. We are to "hate" our old lives, renounce all the earthly things we rely upon, to choose Him above every person and possession. Again He tells us that the things we have - even our family ties and obligations - can become an excuse, an obstacle that keeps us from giving ourselves completely to Him. The wisdom of God comes to us both as gift and as responsibility. What blocks you from the Reign of God? Career? Bank account? Housework? Are we so mesmerized by family drama that we neglect our spiritual obligations and the needs of others? Everyone of us faces obstacles to discipleship. We cannot desert family or job, but we can incorporate prayerfulness and charity into both. Pray for five minutes before work and before you see your family in the evening. We have well-founded faith that the Holy Spirit makes a difference in day to day matters. Tips for prayers: Ask yourself these questions when where what: when to pray, where to pray and what to pray and why pray. Prayer is meant to be a relationship with God. To be in a good relationship we must spend time communicating with the person.
Merciful like the Father Merciful like the Father: . “Live your life joyfully!” and do “something beautiful for God.” Words for each of us to live our daily lives. I was reading the article Mother Teresa and Doing Something Beautiful for God by James Martin, SJ and want to share these thoughts for each of us as we continue to live our Year of Mercy. Father spent some time working at a hospice run by the Missionaries of Charity. He shares when he was about ready to throw in the towel, one of the sisters would smile and make a joke, or tell me what a great job he was doing. And I knew that I couldn’t let the sisters down. The sisters got me through the first few weeks, and after that I was gradually able to enter
more fully into the work (though I never, ever liked clipping toenails). In time, I grew to know the men at Our Lady Queen of Peace as individuals, not simply as bodies to be washed. Understanding that “the poor” and “the sick” and “the homeless” were not categories but individuals. What he saw was a cheerfulness that communicated the joy of their vocation and the joy of serving Christ. It had a practical application, too. Their attitude was a gift to those poor who had known mostly misery and rejection in life. Their goal was to make all feel that they are loved,” “If we went to them with a sad face, we would only make them much more de-pressed.” “True holiness,” Mother Teresa had written, “consists in doing God’s will with a smile.” That is a difficult statement for many to accept, since it’s so close to the banal “offer it up for God” spirituality. But Mother Teresa, whose interior life was full of darkness, put into practice what she believed to great effect. So did her sisters. “Live your life joyfully!” and do “something beautiful for God.”

Confirmation classes are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 27th. Registration is still open, the deadline to register is September 20th. “Is my child ready to be signed up for Confirmation class?” Confirmation classes are open to any students who are currently in high school and have already been Baptized and received their First Reconciliation and Communion. “What if my child goes to a Catholic school? Won’t they get these classes already?” Even if your child is enrolled in a Catholic high school, he/she must sign up to prepare for Confirmation classes at SJB. This is always done through the parish. “What kind of time commitment is involved? My child has a very busy schedule.” Classes are every Tuesday evening from 7-8:30pm though the end of April 2017. If you have concerns about attendance, please see me so we can work out a plan. Sacraments are an important part of your child’s life!

Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated the first Sunday of the Month directly following the 10 am Mass. One baptismal preparation class is required. The preparation class seeks to help parents understand the Rite of Bap-tism and to prepare and support parents in the on-going faith formation of their child. ►Ropa para Niños Este es un momento perfecto para comprar ropa para los de niños para el regreso a la es-cuela, el Condado de Clacka-mas en el norte, Centro de
Ropa Infantil está ayudando a los niños en edad esco-
lar. Si necesita nueva ropa interior, calcetines y camisetas para los niños y niñas cuyas familias, no puedan comprarles. El Centro de Ropa es un ministerio de la iglesia episcopal de San Juan en Milwaukie. Desde 2006, han proporcionado la ropa para el regreso a la escuela para más de 1000 niños, que son referidos a través de sus consejeros escolares o trabajadores sociales. Las familias deben pedir una cita, hay voluntarios y "personal shoppers" que les proporcionar un ambiente acogedor y de apoyo, mientras que ayudan a los niños en la selección de la ropa y accesorios. ►Kids Clothing Drive This is a perfect time to shop for back-to-school kids clothes and to help grade school-age
children in North Clackamas County succeed. The Children’s Clothing Center needs new underwear, socks, and shirts for both boys and girls whose families would otherwise not be able to provide for them. The Clothing Center is a ministry of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Milwaukie. Since 2006, they have provided back-to-school clothes for over 1000 children, who are referred through their school counselors or social work-ers. Families bring their children to shop on an appoint-ment basis, and volunteer “personal shoppers” provide a welcoming, supportive atmosphere while assisting children in selecting clothing and accessories. The need this year is for new underwear, socks, for kids Kindergarten through 5
th Grade (boys and
girls, small to XLarge), and our St. John ’s Catholic Church community has been asked to help collect do-nations. Please bring new clothing to church on the weekends of September 10
th and 17th, and put
them in the designated basket at the back of church, or bring your donations to the parish office any time this month. Thank you for your help!
►Taking Communion to the Homebound Several questions have come up concerning how to bring the precious Body of Jesus to those we love at home. The Church have very direct regulations on how the Eucharist is to be carried to those who are not able to attend Mass. It is highly recommended that the faithful receive Holy Communion during the Eucharistic celebration itself. Communion can be administered outside the Mass, however, to those who request it for a just cause with the liturgical rites being observed. Cannon code of Law #918. The items you need in bringing communion to the homebound are: ► PYX: Is the container that holds the consecrated host. ►Purificator: Is a white cloth that is used to place the pyx containing the consecrated host on during the communion rite. ►The Communion of the Sick Book: contains the rite, prayers and the order of service. This book gives you the prayers to say before and after giving communion.
