Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal 2017

Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic

Appeal will receive a mailing from Archbishop Sam-

ple within the next few days. St. John’s will delay our

commitment presentation until Feb. 18-19th. Appeal

funds are used to help fund Archdiocesan offices

and agencies that assist the parishes and their peo-

ple. In addition, part of the funds are used to assist

retired archdiocesan priests and seminarian educa-

tion.

The theme of the 2017 Archbishop’s Catholic Ap-

peal is ”Teach, Bless, Serve.” As you consider the

amount you can pledge to help these ministries,

please reflect on the following:

Contributing to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is

one concrete way to “Teach, Bless, Serve”. Take a

moment to honestly examine all the God-given

blessings in your life and then ask not yourself, but

ask God: “What is just?” By our baptism and our

confirmation in the Catholic church, each of us is

called to serve as a good shepherd. We’re called

not only to follow Christ but to be Christ.

Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as you consider

the above reflections, and please give generously

according to the blessings God has given you. Ore

information is available Online for download at http://

Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word,

Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook)

Today's reading is the beginning of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, which is found in Matthew's Gos-pel. The form of the Beatitudes found here is not unique to Jesus. Beatitudes are found in the Old Testament, in the psalms, and in wisdom literature, for example. They are a way to teach about who will find favor with God. The eight Beatitudes are perhaps one of the best known teachings of Je-sus. The beatitude is a genre of teaching from wisdom literature. A blessing is bestowed on a per-son because of their status, that is, the poor, the meek, and that blessing is followed by a subse-quent action that benefits them. The virtues and actions that are espoused are at odds with the cur-rent ideology; they embody the vision of the Kingdom of God that Jesus has come to establish. “Blessed” is sometimes translated as happy, fortunate, or favored. In other words, Jesus is saying that divine favor is upon those who are poor, those who mourn, those who are persecuted. This news might have been welcome—and surprising—to the crowds who heard Jesus that day. The Beatitudes can be understood as a framework for Christian living. Our vocation as Christians is not to be first in this world, but rather to be first in the eyes of God. By referring to the good things that the faithful will experience, Matthew reminds us that those who act in the manner described in the Beatitudes will find their reward with God. The Beatitudes are the framework for the whole of Jesus ministry and the core of expectations for all his disciples. February 2

nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast is rooted in everyday life.

In faithful observance of the law of Moses, Mary, and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple to con-secrate him to the Lord. The first and last parts the Gospel recount practices of the Holy Family that were common for devout Jewish families. Mary and Joseph are faithful to the religious customs. Af-ter the Presentations Mary and Joseph return to their home to fulfill their parental responsibilities. This feast is also called Candlemas Day. According to the Gospel account Simeon recognized Je-sus as the Messiah in the Temple and declared him “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” This sparked the tradition of blessing candles to have in your home. Father will call you forward with your candles to be blessed. February 3

rd we celebrate the memorial of St. Blaise Bishop and Martyr. To honor St. Blaise

the Blessing of Throats will be offered at the end of Mass. We can think of the blessing of our throats as a sign of God’s care for every part of us. Saint Blaise's protection of those with throat troubles apparently comes from a legend that a boy was brought to him who had a fishbone stuck in his throat. The boy was about to die when Saint Blaise healed him. Very few facts are known about Saint Blaise. An invitation from Jesus a Call to Liturgical Ministry: It is still January the month of making resolutions, committing ourselves to changes that will make us a better person. How are you doing? Many of us might want to examine our spiritual life to see the benefits from changes. This is an invi-tation to consider one’s call to ministry. When we are ready to make a commitment we can stand before the Lord and cry out: “Here I am Lord; I come to do your will.” These words can be a mantra of all those who accept the role of minister before the Lord. Call Pat at the parish office (5503-654-5449) for details and training information.

Liturgia: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyo-

There are now 14 families (down from 29) supporting St. John’s through Fred Meyer Community Rewards, but our quarterly reward increased from $110.86 at the end of October to $131.33 which will go to our operating budget. Imagine what it would be if 100 parishioners registered their rewards card with Fred Meyer! It does not diminish your rewards, only allows St. John’s to be the recipient of Fred Meyer’s program. Kroger’s (Fred Meyer parent company) is donating $2.5 million per year to non-profits in Alaska,

Idaho, Oregon and Washington, based on where their customers tell them to give. Here’s how YOU can participate: Sign up for the Community Rewards program by linking your Fred Meyer Rewards Card to St. John the Baptist Catholic

Church. Go to: www.fredmeyer.com/communityrewards and search for us by our name, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, or by our non-profit number assigned by Fred Meyer: 82252

Then, every time you shop and use your Rewards card you are helping us earn a donation that will be applied to our operating needs.

You will still earn your rewards points, fuel points and rebates, just as you do today. If you do not have a Rewards card, they are available at the Customer Service desk of any Fred Meyer store. If you have questions or would like help signing up for this program, please contact the parish office.
