SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVATIONS LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES

Dear parishioners, Father Claudio has graciously granted the parish Respect Life Committee the opportunity to address all the masses the weekend of July 15. Local pro-life activities were formally organized into a ministry four years ago to both promote the cause of life and to oppose the culture of death that so much surrounds us today. This mission is in accord with St. John Paul II’s famous encyclical Evangelium Vitae, the US Conference of Cath-olic Bishops, the Diocese of Monterey and Church teachings dating to the first century where Christianity of-fered a radical alternative to the dying, pagan culture of the Roman Empire. Our committee has focused its efforts in three main areas:

Public and parish education. Support of the Hollister Pregnancy Center. Youth involvement in the Culture of Life.

For the last four years the committee has sponsored a booth at the San Benito County Fair where personal en-counter and educational materials are used to educate the County at large. This has been a very effective me-dium to reach people, particularly children, using Pro-Life models, videos and brochures. At the parish level, we have attempted to get the Pro-Life message out by enclosing Inserts from the US Con-ference of Catholic Bishops in the Bulletin regarding Catholic Teaching on abor tion, euthanasia, capital punishment and other pro-life issues. If you notice these inserts, that are found distributed over the early part of each year. These can be extremely informative to both the Catholic perspective and conscience. The Hollister Pregnancy Center was established over thir ty years ago largely by Sacred Hear t par ish-ioners. Each week this Center saves lives by encountering and supporting parents in crisis pregnancies to choose life for their unborn. Our group supports this mission by participating in the annual Hollister Walk for Life and by attending their Fund-Raising Gala each spr ing. Up to this point our Ministry to Parish Youth has involved the participation of our confirmation classes in the West Coast Walk For Life each January in San Francisco. This is actually more of a retreat than a walk. There are Rosaries and songs on the bus up, a pro-life mass with the Archbishop at St. Mary’s Cathe-dral, then the walk, where youth and Catholics predominate, and ending with a pro-life film on the bus home. We have hired two to four buses for this event over each of the last four years. This year we are taking a new approach by offering parishioners and parents a ten-week Course on St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. This topic is designed to illuminate the beauty and spir ituality of the body, marriage, celibacy and chastity that parents will hopefully use to instruct their children on these issues in light of God’s teachings and those of his Holy church. Stay tuned for further details on this course slated to start in September. As you can see, we have embarked on an ambitious course. We need support of two kinds to continue. First, we invite parishioners to join our group, which meets the third Thursday of each month at the Pastoral Center. Second, we do not function as a fund-raising entity but devote ourselves to our ministry. For this reason, a budget is required. Each bus to San Francisco costs nearly $2,000, not to mention the cost of the Fair and oth-er educational activities. To fill these needs Father Claudio has dedicated next week’s Second Collection to our cause. If you feel these efforts are important to the enrichment of our parish and community, please be generous with your support next week. Your Respect life Committee.

Queridos feligreses, El Padre Claudio nos ha otorgado la oportunidad al Comité de Respeto a la Vida de la parroquia de dirigirse a todas las misas el fin de semana del 15 de julio. Las actividades pro-vida locales se organizaron formalmente en un ministerio hace cuatro años para promover la causa de la vida y oponerse a la cultura de muerte que tanto nos rodea. CATECHESIS CORNER The ins tu on of the Mass

Many non-Catholics do not understand the Mass. Television evangelist Jimmy Swaggart wrote, “The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the Holy Mass is an expiatory sacrifice, in which the Son of God is actually sacrificed anew on the cross” (Swaggart, Catholicism and Chris anity). The late Loraine Boe ner, the dean of an -Catholic Fundamentalists, said the Mass is a “jumble of medieval supers on.” Va can II puts the Catholic posi on succinctly: “At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior ins tuted the eucharis c sacrifice of his body and blood. He did this in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the centuries un l he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrec on: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 47). Even a modestly informed Catholic can set an inquirer right and direct him to biblical accounts of Jesus’ final night with his disciples. Turning to the text, we read, “And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, say-ing, ‘This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remem-brance of me’” (Luke 22:19). The Greek here and in the parallel Gospel passages (cf. Ma . 26:26; Mark 14:22) reads: Touto es n to soma mou. Paul’s ver-sion differs slightly: Touto mou es n to soma (1 Cor. 11:24). They all translate as “This is my body.” The verb es n is the equivalent of the English is and can mean “is really” or “is figura-

vely.” The usual meaning of es n is the former (check any Greek grammar book), just as, in English, the verb is usually is taken literally. Fundamentalists insist that when Christ says, “This is my body,” he is speaking figura vely. But this interpreta on is pre-cluded by Paul’s discussion of the Eucharist in 1 Corinthians 11:23–29 and by the whole tenor of John 6, the chapter where the Eucharist is promised. The Greek word for “body” in John 6:54 is sarx, which means physical flesh, and the word for “eats” (trōgōn) translates as “gnawing” or “chewing.” This is certainly not the language of metaphor. No “Figura ve Pres-ence” The literal meaning cannot be avoided except through vio-lence to the text—and through the rejec on of the universal understanding of the early Chris an centuries. The wri ngs of Paul and John reflect belief in the Real Presence. There is no basis for forcing anything else out of the lines, and no writer tried to do so un l the early Middle Ages. Christ did not ins tute a Figura ve Presence. Some Fundamentalists say the word is is used because Aramaic, the language Christ spoke, had no word for “represents.” Those who make this feeble claim are behind the mes, since, as Nicholas Cardinal Wiseman showed a centu-ry ago, Aramaic has about three dozen words that can mean “represents.”

The Catholic Posi on The Church teaches that the Mass is the re-presenta on of the sacrifice of Calvary, which also is invariably misunderstood by an -Catholics. The Catholic Church does not teach that the Mass is a re-crucifixion of Christ, who does not suffer and die again in the Mass. Yet, it is more than just a memorial service. John A. O’Brien, wri ng in The Faith of Millions, says, “The manner in which the sacrifices are offered is alone different: On the cross Christ really shed his blood and was really slain; in the Mass, however, there is no real shedding of blood, no real death; but the separate consecra on of the bread and of the wine symbolizes the sepa-ra on of the body and blood of Christ and thus symbolizes his death upon the cross. The Mass is the renewal and perpetua on of the sacrifice of the cross in the sense that it offers [Jesus] anew to God . . . and thus commemorates the sacrifice of the cross, reenacts it symbolically and mys cally, and applies the fruits of Christ’s death upon the cross to individual human souls. All the efficacy of the Mass is derived, therefore, from the sacri-fice of Calvary” (306).

“Once for All” The Catholic Church specifically says that Christ does not die again—his death is once for all. It would be something else if the Church were to claim that he does die again, but it does not make that claim. Through his intercessory ministry in heaven and through the Mass, Jesus con nues to offer himself to his Father as a living sacrifice, and he does so in what the Church specifically states is “an unbloody manner”—one that does not involve a new crucifixion.

The Language of Appearances Loraine Boe ner mounts another charge. In chapter 8 of Ro-man Catholicism, when arguing that the meal ins tuted by Christ was strictly symbolic, he gives a cleverly incomplete quo-ta on. He writes, “Paul too says that the bread remains bread: ‘Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread and drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner. . . . But let each man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup’ (1 Cor. 11:27–28).” The part of verse 27 represented by the ellipsis is crucial. It reads, “shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.” Why does Boe ner omit this? Because to be guilty of someone’s body and blood is to commit a crime against his body and blood, not just against symbols of them. The omi ed words clearly imply that the bread and wine become Christ himself. Profaning the Eucharist was so serious that the stakes could be life and death. In the next two verses (29–30), Paul states, “For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. La n Mass in the Extraordinary Form

Sacred Heart Church is the site for the Tradi onal La n Mass in the Monterey Bay Area. This is the Mass at it was celebrated for over a thousand years, it is celebrated in the same way as most of the saints in the Catholic Church experienced it, not to say most of our ancestors. There’s confessions every Sunday prior to this Mass from 9:45-10:15 a.m., and a Sung High La n Mass begins at 10:30 a.m. The La n Mass Chaplain is Fr. Beaugrand. See the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MontereyLa nMass. Sung High Mass will be held every Sunday at 10:30 a.m., Holy Days schedules may vary (see weekly bulle n for updates). We have coffee and snacks a er each Sunday Mass unless otherwise posted. Please come by and say hello; there is always plenty to share.

Hollister Angels Youth Ministry We Invite all Youth Group HOLLISTER ANGELS YOUTH MIN-ISTRY. Weekly mee ngs are every Tuesday; 6:30 pm to 8:pm at St. Benedict’s Hall. We will be having a retreat called Boys Encounter for ages 13yrs old to 17yrs old on June 29 that begins at 6:pm and ends on July 1st at 4:30PM at San Pablo de Colores in Wat-sonville We will also have a Girls Encounter ages 13 years old to 17 years old; this will be July 20, -- to July 22, 2018 also at San Pablo de Colores in Watsonville And we have what is called a Sharing this is Boys and Girls ages 9 yrs old to 12 yrs old this will on September 8, and 9th 2018 .

Knights of Columbus Fundraiser
