Dear Friends of Althoff Catholic,
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate
breaking ground on our outdoor athletic
complex and the construction of our STREAM Lab.
We would not be here this evening without the
dedication of our chairpersons, committee
members and the support of our Bishop.
The generosity of our Althoff Catholic
community and our corporate sponsors has been
truly overwhelming.
We are proud to have served the Catholic
community of St. Clair County for 53 years.
“What’s good for Althoff Catholic is good for all” is
a sentiment that was shared with me by a donor and I could not agree more. These
exciting improvements not only benefit our school, but our community as a whole.
“Igniting the Future Together” stems from the strategic plan instituted in 2015 as part of
our 50th anniversary celebration. I am pleased this campaign has fulfilled many of the
goals of our strategic plan.
In addition to the capital improvements, the Igniting the Future Comprehensive
Campaign also includes the following strategic improvements.
Moving from 22 to 32 Saint Louis University Advanced College Credit courses
Addition of a virtue-based leadership program called Sports Leader, which was
piloted in the Spring of 2017
Integration of Project Lead the Way Engineering and Biomedical courses into the
Althoff Catholic curriculum as part of a 3-year STREAM Lab roll-out
Strengthening the school’s annual fund to help increase the amount of tuition
assistance available to families who desire Catholic secondary education for their
children
I am also grateful to EWR Architects, Byrne & Jones, FieldTurf and our own talented
Building and Grounds team for their work on our capital improvements.
Sincerely,
Dave

About FieldTurf
“Throughout the last decade our engineered, infilled artificial turf systems became the first to
host two Super Bowls, the World Series, the World Baseball Classic, a Major League Soccer Cup
final and College Bowl games from coast to coast. Today, FieldTurf continues to thrive as the
global market leader in synthetic sports fields with more than 7,000 fields installed. Cities and

Introduction to Engineering Design
Students dig deep into the engineering
design process, applying math, science,
and engineering standards to hands-on
projects like designing a new toy or
improving an existing product.
Principles of Engineering
Students explore a broad range of
engineering topics including mechanisms,
strength of structure and materials and
automation, and then they apply what
they know to take on challenges like
designing a self-powered car.
Using Python® as a primary tool, students
develop computational-thinking skills and
tackle challenges like designing apps to
solve real-world problems for clients.
Principles of Biomedical Science
By engaging in activities like dissecting a
sheep heart, students explore concepts
of biology and medicine to determine
factors that led to the death of a fictional
person.
Human Body Systems
Through projects such as determining the
identity of a skeleton using both forensic
anthropology and DNA analysis, students
examine the interactions of human body
systems and apply what they know to
solve real-world medical cases.

At the second annual Igniting the Future
Together Gala, Althoff Catholic High School
announced a new partnership with HSHS St.
Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Recently, we finalized a
very meaningful partnership with HSHS
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital based upon our shared
missions of bringing Christ’s presence to those
we serve in our respective institutions,” said
Dave Harris. St. Elizabeth’s mission is ‘to reveal
and embody Christ’s healing love for all
people through high quality Franciscan health
care ministry.’ The new partnership will bring
this mission to the Althoff Catholic community
through athletic training and other health care
services to student athletes through
St. Elizabeth’s Athletes Advantage Program.
The second part of the partnership is based
upon sponsorship and advertising support in
and around Althoff Catholic’s new outdoor
athletic complex, the gymnasium and in the
new STREAM Lab over the course of the next
five years. In addition, St. Elizabeth’s hopes to support Althoff students aspiring to pursue a
career in the health care industry with presentations by medical professionals in the STREAM
Lab. “It is such an exciting time for us to be entering into a five-year partnership with Althoff
Catholic High School,” said Peg Sebastian, President & CEO of HSHS St. Elizabeth’s
Hospital. “Both of our organizations are working to strengthen the important Catholic-based
services we provide to our community. This partnership benefits both of our institutions and
demonstrates St. Elizabeth’s continued commitment to the Belleville community.”
“We could not be more proud to partner with our Metro East region’s Catholic hospital as
both of our institutions move into exciting new chapters,” said Dave Harris. “We are grateful to
be an important part of St. Elizabeth Hospital’s continued commitment to Belleville.”

This spring, Althoff Catholic High School
began the roll-out of a new Catholic
virtue-based formation program called
SportsLeader. The program is built upon the
four pillars of virtue, mentoring, ceremony
and Catholic Identity. “Central to the
SportsLeader program is a virtue of the
week,” said Dave Harris. “I chose to
implement the program as a way to build
upon the faith formation we are already
doing at our school and to further strengthen
the character and team-building
experiences of our athletic programs.” The
SportsLeader program provides a set of
materials related to the weekly virtue as well
as guidelines and suggestions for
implementing the other pillars of the
program. This coming fall, the school will
carry the virtue of the week into the
classroom experience with a daily 18-minute
‘Virtue Period’ led by a teacher and an
additional staff member.
In this story, we share the early experience of
the girls’ varsity soccer team, their coaches
and parents with the SportsLeader program.
The team incorporates the virtue of the week
in prayer and discussions at practices and
before games. According to assistant coach
and Althoff Catholic alum, Kelsey Dinges ’11,
the girls often express things going on in their
lives and ask their teammates for
prayer. “Althoff soccer has always been a
community,” said Kelsey. “The activities we
are doing through the SportsLeader program
are helping us become more of a family.”
Through the stories, videos and subsequent
discussions pertaining to the “virtue of the
week,” the girls are getting to know one
another better which is helping them support
each other both on and off the field. “Our
coaches inform us of the weekly virtue on
Mondays. Throughout the week, they remind
us of ways to live by that virtue,”said senior
co-captain, Amanda Kaltwasser. “One week
the virtue was ‘other-centered.’
Doing something as simple as remembering
to hold the door for another person or asking
them about their day is a way I put this virtue
into practice.’” Nicole Jones, senior co-
captain also finds the virtue of the week to
be a helpful reminder of the things that are
most important in life. “Several weeks ago,
the virtue was forgiveness,” said Nicole. “I
use this virtue by not being negative or
holding grudges against my teammates or
classmates.”
Another pillar of the program is ceremony. At
the beginning of the season, the team held
the SportsLeader father-student jersey
ceremony. Head Coach Juergen Huettner
asked Jeff Jones, Nicole’s father, to be the
first dad to present his daughter’s jersey. “This
was a new experience for all of us,” said
Jeff. “I wanted to make sure I did not
disappoint or embarrass Nicole, while being
open about my love for her. I was really
appreciative of Juergen’s comments at the
end of the ceremony regarding how he is
embracing this new program.”
David Kaltwasser, Amanda’s father, also
enjoyed the jersey ceremony. “This being
Mandi’s senior year, I recognize this chapter
of her life is coming to a close. The jersey
ceremony was a unique opportunity to
express my feelings of pride in all of her
accomplishments,” said David. “It also
allowed me the opportunity to let her know I
am always here to support her.”
“I think with the temptations and influences
of society it can be difficult to follow your
Catholic values,” said Nicole. “With this
program it is easier to focus on being a
leader and embracing virtues with your
team.” Amanda agrees that leadership is
important for young people growing up in
today’s society. “It is important for us to learn
to be leaders,” said Amanda. “As we focus
on virtues, being respectful and willing to
work together we will help our world
become a more loving place filled with
hope, desire and bravery.”

“I didn’t realize they were students.”
“I thought the school hired professional commentators.”
These are sentiments that have been expressed several times by Crusader basketball fans. “Althoff
Catholic is a place where kids can present their ideas and be empowered to implement them,” said
Greg Leib, Athletic Director and head basketball coach. The Crusader Broadcasting Network (CBN)
began when Jack Guthrie ‘18 (a transfer student from an all-boys school in St. Louis), witnessed
Althoff Catholic’s state championship run last year. “About a month after the win, I went to Coach
Leib and asked if I would be able to live stream and commentate the games [next season],” said
Jack. “Coach Leib was very supportive of the idea and pointed us in the right direction to get things
off the ground.”
Jack asked his good friend from St. Teresa Grade School to join him as a commentator. “Colin
Forhan ‘18 and I used to pretend we were announcers on the playground when playing any sport. It
is something we have been interested in for a long time,” said Jack. Once Jack recruited his partner
in commentating, they got together with the school’s technology director, Nathan Walter, and
learned how to use the equipment and the live stream program. Jack and Colin recruited another
fellow St. Teresa classmate, John Lewis ‘18 to do the camera work. “Working behind the camera has
been a blast,” said John. “I really enjoy covering all the action and being able to say that I’m
behind the camera.”
The Crusader Broadcasting Network officially launched at the Highland Thanksgiving Basketball
Tournament on November 22, 2016. The crew has been averaging 1,000 viewers per game which
has been a pleasant surprise for them and for the team. “Coach Leib cannot believe the number of
viewers that join us at each game,” said Jack. “On the bus ride home, Coach always asks about our
numbers. He shared with us that his brother watches from Flora, Illinois, his hometown. That is a huge
honor for us.”
“Being able to bring Althoff Catholic basketball to people who are not able to make the games is
very meaningful,” said Colin. “Ever since the first game, we have been putting highlight clips on
Twitter.
Inside the Cube :: Crusader Broadcasting Network
There is a mutual respect between the team and the Crusader Broadcasting Network.” Jordan
Goodwin ’17 was in the same boat as many fans when the Crusader Broadcasting Network first
started, “At first I did not believe they were students,” said Jordan. “The guys are very professional,
and they know us better than anyone. They come to our practices and share stats with us. CBN has
the respect of the whole team.” On the bus ride home, Jordan has been known to ask, “Did you say
‘bang, bang’ (Jack Guthrie’s catchphrase) after all my three pointers?”
These last few months have been a huge learning opportunity for Jack, Colin and John. “Bringing
the excitement of Althoff Catholic basketball to people online is just amazing,” said Jack. CBN has
experienced some minor setbacks on the technical side of the live stream. Working to understand
how to make best use of The Cube, a complimentary live stream provider for schools, and a
somewhat outdated laptop to the best of their abilities is CBN’s goal. In the future, the students
hope to obtain a more up-to-date laptop and to secure funding needed to move to the IHSA
recommended National Federation of High School’s live stream program.
While the overall viewer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, CBN has received some
criticism via social media. “We hardly see any negative feedback, when we do we all talk together
before responding,” said John. “We all know, social media can make or destroy your image, so we
are very careful.”
“I think there are a lot of people out there who are just beginning to realize these are high school
juniors doing the broadcasting,” said Principal Dave Harris. “I have had alumni and other friends of
the school comment on how professional the kids are. One night they received feedback about
being too loud, and there being trouble with the connection on The Cube. People have been very
impressed with the professionalism and maturity shown by the boys in addressing these issues. The
passion the Crusader Broadcasting Network has for our school, their fellow students and their viewers
is something very special.”
Jack, Colin and John hope to expand CBN beyond boys’ basketball. On January 4th, they
successfully broadcasted their first girls’ basketball game. The boys also have a goal to create a
succession plan for CBN after they graduate next year. “We had a sports writer tell us that we were
the best student broadcasters he has ever watched and that we sounded like professionals, not just
high school students,” said Jack. “We believe CBN is something special and that it has the potential
to grow and benefit the school in multiple ways.”
Jack Guthrie ’18 is passionate about music. His future goals include attending the Recording
Connection Audio Institute in Chicago and eventually having a job in audio engineering. Jack says
Althoff Catholic is helping prepare him for the future because no matter the subject, teachers want
students to develop critical thinking skills which can be used in all aspects of life. Jack’s favorite
thing about Althoff Catholic is the smaller class sizes and the teachers being able to provide more
one-on-one attention.
Colin Forhan ’18 says the family atmosphere and theology classes are his favorite thing about Althoff
Catholic. He appreciates that his parents have sent him to Catholic schools for his entire life. Colin is
interested in attending Fordham University or TCU. Both schools have strong communications and
sports broadcasting programs.
John Lewis ’18 most enjoys his Honors English class at Althoff Catholic. He plays basketball and
soccer and is involved in Crusaders Against Alcohol and Drugs, Crusaders Take Action, and Student
Ambassadors. John’s dream college is University of Michigan, but he is also looking into University of
Illinois and a few other local schools. John’s favorite thing about Althoff Catholic is the people.
