He learned orchestration through the guidance of composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Introduced the concept of modernism in music.

Studied law and philosophy at the University of St. Petersburg where he met the son of the Russian Composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Wrote several scores for the impressario and founder of the Ballet Russes, Sergei Daghilev.

He left Russia in 1914, setting first in Switzerland, and then in France in 1920, and in the United States in 1939.

Become a French citizen in 1934 and a US citizen in 1945.

Wrote in a neoclassical style, using scales, chords and tone color in a generally clear and traditional way.

Though long opposed to Schoenberg’s 12-tone system. He eventually came to adopt it in his own way using rows of fewer than 12 notes in his compositions.
