COMMENCEMENT

JANUARY 1999

UNIVERSITY Of BALTIMORE

"These are times in which a genius

would wish to live. It is not in the

small calm of life, or in the repose of

a pacific station, that great challenges

are formed ... Great necessities

callout great virtues."

Ahigail Adams Lerrer co John Quincy Adams Uanuary 19, 1780)

To the Members of the Graduating Class Today your names will be added to the long list of men and women who have earned degrees in liberal arts, business, or law at the University of Baltimore. The earliest entries in this log date from 1928, when the University graduated 38 students who had completed the three-year evening law program. (Later consolidation with the Baltimore College of Commerce extended this list back to the 1880s.) Now, 71 years after graduating its first class, University of Baltimore has more that 43,000 alumni.

But the significance of this occasion is not that you are one of many, but that you yourself have achieved a worthy goal. These commencement ceremonies are a public recognition of that accomplishment, and demonstrate the University's pride in your achievement. On behalf of the faculty, administration, and alumni, congratulations.

COMMENCEMENT

Commencement is the special occasion that provides public recognition of academic achievement of students. The diploma is an official document certifying

the completion of curricula requi red for an academic degree.

THE PROMINENCE OF THE MACE

The mace, carried by the senior marshal to lead the ceremonial procession, is a

symbol of authority. The University of Baltimore mace is 42 inches tall, crafted of silver and wood, and bears the seal of the University.

HONORS DESIGNATION

Undergraduate students are awarded degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude

or cum laude based on their cumulative grade point average.

Summa Cum Laude--with greatest praise, signifies graduation wirh highest

honors, i.e., 3.90 grade point average. Magna Cum Laude-with great praise, signifies graduation with high honors, i.e., 3.75 grade point average. Cum Laude-with praise, signifies graduation with honors, i.e ., 3.50 grade point average.

CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES

At this commencement, degrees are conferred on persons who completed requirements during the Winter or Spring 1999 terms. This listing of graduates and honors recipients is tentative, however, because it is not possible to determine, at the time the program is printed, whether each person listed actually has completed the degree. The official transcript of the University of Baltimore, issued directly from the Registrar's Office, is testimony to the possession of a degree.

Notice: For your own safety, look for !he nearesr exisr when you enrer !he audirorium. In an emergency, walk-do nor run-to !hat exit. By order ofthe Mayor and City Council ofBaltimore
