This is a new Chatterpack from The Reading Agency and Franklin Watts with ideas for Chatterbooks reading group activities, discussions and reading suggestions for children to further explore I HERO.

The Chatterpack includes:

• An introduction sheet to warm up the group and encourage them to share details about themselves and their lives• A ‘You are the Hero Activity’ to test the children’s understanding of the book• Various activities to explore the group’s creative side and encourage imagination

The I HERO series is written by Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore. Each book is an exciting interactive adventure where readers are the hero and can decide their own destiny as the story progresses. Readers bring these enjoyable stories to life as they make choices, which pull them further and further into the action. Introduce the book to your group and give them time to read it – then you can follow up with a session using activities from this pack.

Don’t forget to include a paragraph number, a short action scene and something that will force your reader to make a choice. You also need to include the choices, and the paragraph numbers that lead to those choices.

I HERO stories are written in a special way. This is called “in the second person”. The main character is you, and the story is written as if it is happening now.

This is a page from the story Death or Glory:You and Bran run away, towards a forest where you may be able to hide. Roman soldiers chase you.

As you reach the bottom of the small hill, you find another Roman patrol waiting for you. You try to fight your way through them, but Barn gives a terrible cry as a Roman soldier cuts him down. You turn to help him, and feel a spear tip at your throat. You have been captured.

In this version you are still in the story, but it is written as if it happened in the past and “in the first person”. Can you make the changes?
