Jack was brought up in North Shields and had lots of freedom as achild. His family lived in a small house with one bed room. Hisparents and sister shared the bedroom and he slept in an alcoveunder the stairs. He said it was warm as next door had a firebehind the shared wall. He loved playing sports, mainly footballand was an accomplished sprinter. He tells of how you could getadmission to the picture house by taking a small jam jar, if youtook a large jar you a lso got a sweet.
In 1953 he ran in the Olympics … that is the Morpeth Olympics …a race meeting in Northumberland. He won his heat and the semi-finals and got through to the finals, but didn't win!
He was conscripted into the army just afterWWII and took part in the Berlin Airlift. Hetrained as a driver.
He has had a variety of jobs—sometimesthree in one day and was known to work upto 19 hours a day.
Just before Eddy was born, he was a lorrydriver and someone was guiding him backtowards a cliff, they were tipping rubble, when the lorry went over the cliff with him init. He was lucky it was low tide and it landedon the rocks. When he arrived at the hospital,he met Barbara who was attending anantenatal clinic. His story made thenewspapers.

Maud came from a quite well off large family in London, she was oneof 9 children. Her father was quite strict and when she came homeone day with short hair, he said she was a scarlet woman and lockedher in her room for a week. Then she came home in a short skirt andgot locked in her room for another week.
In WWI, she joined the FANYs (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) whenher father found out he went and forced her to come home. So thenshe worked in a factory making Airship s. One day her team wasinside one of these huge balloons checking for faults and it collapsed. It was very frightening as they had to wait inside the deflated balloonto be rescued.
She was an excellent needlewoman and wona nation competition for her embroidery.
Her daughters said she was a qu iet person, but she was the best mother ever.

Thomas and Grace were running a pubcalled “The Plough” in Woodhorn in the1841 and 1851 census. Woodhorn is asmall quiet village and was probably anideal place for the family when thechildren were small, but there was littleopportunity there for the children topursue trades.
In the 1861 census they had moved their family to Blythwhich was a thriving port and all the children where inemployment of some kind, but Thomas was now workingas an Agricultural Labourer on a farm. He was born inDetchant which was an agricultural area, so he may havehad experience of this job when he was younger.
On his son, William’s wedding certificate he is described asa Husbandman, that is usually someone who farms a smallpiece of land for themselves as well as working on largerfarms.
His son, Thomas became a Stonemason in Blyth and livedin a prosperous part of the town, both John and Williambecame Mariners. William became a Master Mariner.
