LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Now that the Diocese of Orange has acquired the former Crystal Cathedral campus in Garden Grove as not only the future site for our new “Christ Cathedral” as well as Diocesan administrative center together with a school complex, a myriad of understandable questions have been surfacing in regard to this exciting and challenging chapter in the history of our diocese. It is my hope that the fol-lowing Q and A that begins this week and continues in the coming weeks, might be helpful in understanding the ra-tionale behind this acquisition and what the future holds. Why did the Diocese purchase the Crystal Cathedral site? Didn’t they already have a location for a future Cathedral?
Over ten years ago, Bishop Brown acquired a 15 acre site in Metro Point, not far from the South Coast Shopping Center, from the Segerstrom family, as the future site for our new Cathedral. A parish was subsequently established and named Christ our Savior Cathedral parish. Temporary buildings were put up and the parish continues to this day. An architect was secured to do preliminary plans for a new Cathe-dral complex on this site. The estimated cost of eventually building a new Cathedral as well as ancillary buildings and parking lot on this site was between $ 150,000,000 to $ 200,000,000! When news of the impending bankruptcy of the Crystal Cathedral Ministries at their Garden Grove site was reported, the Bishop was encouraged to look into the possibility of acquiring this site for diocesan use. As the bank-ruptcy unfolded it become clear that this 35 acre site, centrally located, with buildings designed by three iconic American architects, could be acquired at considerably less than the estimated cost for a new Ca-thedral on the Segerstrom site. As it turned out, the Crystal Cathedral site was acquired by the Diocese for $ 57,000,000.
Why do we even need a new Cathedral?
As one of the largest dioceses in the United States with over 1 million Catholics and after 35 years since our establishment as a diocese, it is time that plans are laid for a truly worthy Cathedral that can be a li-turgical focal point for our growing and vibrant local Church of Orange. Our present Cathedral of Holy Family in Orange was never intended to be a Cathedral Church and can only accommodate approximate-ly 800 people. While there are a number of large Churches in our Diocese, the lengthy tradition for us as Catholics of having a truly beautiful and ample Cathedral to accommodate the major liturgical events in the life of a diocese continues to be of value for many of us as Catholics. While our parish Churches hold understandable significance for us, we are all part of a local Church called a “Diocese” with a single chief shepherd, our bishop, who signifies the unity of our local Church. As St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote in the 2nd century, “Where the bishop is, there is the Church!” The Cathedral is the bishop’s church, signified by the “chair” or “cathedra” from which he shepherds God’s people and leads them in the “sacrifice of praise” as chief liturgist in the Diocese.
Isn’t it unprecedented that a Catholic Diocese has acquired a Protestant Church building for its future Cathedral? What will need to be done to make it a Catholic Cathedral? It is indeed unprecedented. While a number of Catholic Cathedrals were taken over and made Protestant Churches and Cathedrals during the Reformation, in my own research I have not discovered, certainly in

the history of the Catholic Church in the United States, a Protestant Church being acquired by the Catho-lic Church and made its Cathedral. While it has been said that the former “Crystal Cathedral” was neither “Crystal” nor a “Cathedral” it was indeed one of the largest Churches within the Reformed Church of America, a relatively small but historic Protestant denomination here in the United States to which Dr. Robert Schuller and his congregation belonged. In order for the transformation of this iconic building de-signed by the famous American post-modern architect, Philip Johnson, into a Roman Catholic Cathedral, a very detailed plan is presently being orchestrated by Diocesan leadership to accomplish this end. Of the many committees established to oversee the transformation of the entire site to Catholic use, there is a specific group called the “Liturgical Consultant and Renovation Committee” that is charged with securing an appropriate and well qualified Liturgical Consultant to work with the committee to eventually acquire the architect who will develop the overall conceptual design that will transform the interior space of the present structure into a worthy and beautiful Cathedral for our Diocese. I am honored to be one of the members of the committee.
Next week, we will look at some additional questions regarding our new Cathedral site as this historic chapter unfolds for us in our diocese. Beginning our new week in Christ, let us commend to the loving mercy of our God, all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, especially Juan Reyes. May they be at peace. OUTREACH FOOD DONATION
This weekend, our monthly food donation bags are being distributed after all the masses. Suggested donation items are noted on our “Wish List”. The bags can be picked up from the baskets by the Basilica doors and can be returned with your do-nations next weekend August 25-26 before mass or dropped off at any time at the Parish Office. The Pantry would like to thank those who made donations last month as we collected more than 175 bags of much needed items. Thank you for your support of our ministry!

MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO The Basilica Music Ministry program is seeking dedicated volunteers to be part of a thriving and vibrant music program. Each Sunday, the Basilica Mixed Ensemble provides choral music to support and enhance the liturgical life of the Mission parish community. The current 40 member ensemble sings a vast repertoire of choral music; Gregorian Chant, Renaissance Polyphony to modern master pieces. This season, we will dedicate our new Rodger's Masterpiece Signature Series organ and perform the Christmas portions of Handel’s Messiah, with orchestra to begin the holiday season. The Mixed Ensemble rehearses each Thursday evening from 7:30 - 9:30PM and sings for the 11:00AM Sunday liturgy. MENASJE DE LA SEMANA: Sin lugar a dudas, una de las aspiraciones más profundas y vitales de toda persona es la vida, es el de-
seo de vivir, de vivir en plenitud. De ahí que hoy día, y por todas partes, se nos hable de “calidad de vida”, de “mejorar las condiciones de vida”, de...
¡Es curioso el mensaje de este domingo! Porque Jesús se atreve a afirmar que “el que coma de este pan vivirá para siempre”. Y se refiere al Pan que Él Mismo ofrece al mundo, a sus seguidores. ¿Será verdad? ¿O será una especie de “fantasmada” de este Jesús?
Hoy, a los creyentes, se nos ofrece JESÚS como Fuente de Vida y Esperanza; como Aquél en quien está lo imperecedero; como Aquél que puede transformar nuestra vida y animarla. Pero claro, esto supone Volver a los Valores Evangélicos más profundos, como la sencillez, la sobriedad, la solidaridad con todos, la acogida a los débiles y pequeños, la amistad sincera, el encuentro gozoso con el Padre; es decir, aquello que el mismo Jesús vivió intensamente en su vida y caminar en el proyecto de Dios.
¿Seremos capaces de alimentarnos de este Pan que Jesús nos ofre-ce? ¿Seremos lo suficientemente inteligentes como para saciar nuestra hambre y nuestra sed en Aquél que realmente puede llenarnos?
¡Dichoso quien se alimenta del PAN de la VIDA: porque su vida tendrá plenitud!

Es mi esperanza que la siguiente serie de preguntas y respuestas que comienza esta semana y continúa en las próximas sema-nas, pueda ser útil para entender la lógica detrás de esta ad-quisición y lo que depara el futuro. ¿Por qué la Diócesis compró el sitio de la Catedral de Cristal? ¿Qué no tenía ya un lugar para una futura catedral? Hace más de diez años, el obispo Brown adquirió un sitio de 15 acres en el área Metro, no lejos del Centro Co-mercial de South Coast Plaza, de la familia Segerstrom, como futura sede de nuestra nueva Catedral. La parroquia se creó posteriormente como “Catedral Cristo Nuestro Salvador”. Construcciones provisionales fueron puestas y continúan hasta nuestros días. Un arquitecto se aseguró de hacer planes preliminares para un complejo de la nueva catedral en este sitio. El costo aproximado por el tiempo de la construcción de una nueva catedral, así como los edificios auxiliares y estacionamiento en este sitio fue de entre ¡$150.000.000 a $ 200.000.000 millones! Cuando se dio la noticia de la inminente quiebra de los Ministerios de la Catedral de Cristal en su sitio de Garden Grove, el Obispo fue animado a considerar la posibilidad de adquirir este sitio para uso diocesano. A medida que se dio la quiebra quedo claro que este sitio de 35 acres, situado en el centro del condado, con edificios diseñados por tres arquitectos estadounidenses emblemáticos, puede ser adquirido considerablemente por un costo mucho menor que el costo de una nueva catedral en el sitio Segerstrom. Al final resultó que, el sitio de la Catedral de Cristal fue adquirido por la Diócesis de Orange por la cantidad de $ 57,000,000 millones. ¿Por qué necesitamos una nueva catedral? Como una de las diócesis mas grande de los Estados Unidos con más de 1 millón de católicos, y después de 35 años desde nuestra creación como diócesis, es hora de que los planes se establezcan para una catedral realmente digna que puede ser un punto central para nuestra liturgia creciente y vibrante en la Iglesia local de Orange. Nues-tra actual Catedral de la Sagrada Familia en la ciudad de Orange nunca considerada para ser Catedral ya que sólo tiene capacidad para aproximadamente 800 personas. Si bien hay un gran número de grandes iglesias en nuestra diócesis, la larga tradición para nosotros, como católicos, de tener una catedral realmente hermosa y amplia para dar cabida a los eventos más importantes en la vida litúrgica de la diócesis sigue siendo de valor para muchos de nosotros, como católicos. Mientras que nuestras parroquias tienen un significado comprensible para nosotros, to-dos somos parte de una Iglesia local llamada "Diócesis" con un solo pastor, nuestro obispo, que representa la uni-dad de nuestra Iglesia local. Como San Ignacio de Antioquia escribió en el siglo segundo, ¡"donde está el obispo, allí está la Iglesia"! La Catedral es la iglesia del obispo, representado por la "silla" o "cátedra" de donde los pastores del pueblo de Dios llevan al pueblo en el "sacrificio de alabanza", como el principal liturgista en la diócesis. ¿No es inaudito que una diócesis católica haya adquirido un edificio de la Iglesia Protestante como futura Catedral? ¿Qué hay que hacer para que sea una catedral católica? De hecho, es sin precedentes. Mientras que un número de catedrales católicas fueron tomadas por iglesias y cate-drales protestantes durante la Reforma, en mi propia investigación no he descubierto, sin duda en la historia de la Iglesia Católica en los Estados Unidos, una iglesia protestante que fuera adquirida por la Iglesia Católica para una Catedral. Si bien se ha dicho que la primera "Catedral de Cristal" no era ni de "Cristal" ni una "Catedral" de hecho
19 de agosto del 2012 † Vigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario XI fue una de las iglesias más grandes dentro de la Iglesia Reformada de América, una denominación protestante relati-vamente pequeña pero histórica aquí en los Estados Unidos a la que el Dr. Robert Schuller y su congregación per-tenecían. Para que la transformación de este emblemático edificio diseñado por el famoso arquitecto estadouni-dense post-moderno, Philip Johnson, se convierta en una catedral católica, un plan muy detallado está siendo dirigi-do por la Diócesis para llevar a cabo este fin. De los muchos comités establecidos para supervisar la transforma-ción de todo el sitio para el uso Católico, hay un grupo específico denominado "Comité de Consulta y Renovación Litúrgica" que se encarga de asegurar el tener la persona profesional apropiada para consultar sobre los cambios litúrgicos que trabaja con el comité que eventualmente contratara al arquitecto que va a desarrollar el diseño con-ceptual que eventualmente transformara el espacio interior de la estructura actual en una catedral digna y hermosa de nuestra Diócesis. Me siento muy honrado de ser uno de los miembros de tal comité. La próxima semana, vamos a ver algunas de las preguntas adicionales acerca del sitio de nuestra nueva catedral, ya que se esta desarrollando un nuevo capítulo histórico para nosotros en nuestra diócesis. La Iglesia Católica cree que los padres de familia son los primeros educadores en la fe de sus hijos y que el papel de la parroquia es ayudarles y apoyarles.
