Some Words on Safety
It is crucial to remember that, while it is fine to enjoy a drink
or two at one’s own party, the safety of your guests is your
responsibility and yours alone. This means that if you are
going to have enough to drink to make driving illegal, you
must designate someone to remain sober. Often, this would
be the doorman, hired from a service or a volunteer from your
group of friends. The doorman, clearly, doesn’t get to drink
at all. Someone must be able to call an ambulance or drive
someone to a the hospital, God forbid, and be cogent enough
to make decisions about calling cabs for guests who are in
no shape to drive. One cannot make an accurate estimate of
someone’s sobriety when one is inebriated oneself.
Step 1
Determine the capacity of your venue, and from that the
number of guests and bartending stations. The maximum
capacity for your house or apartment is not how many people
can fit in it without anyone being trampled to death, but
rather how many people can be promptly served, cleaned up
after in a reasonable amount of time, and be provided with
bathroom facilities. Eight to ten square feet per person is a
good starting point to determine your maximum capacity.
One bathroom can serve forty guests, maximum.
Cocktails are not worth
intellectualising,
they are just something to
be experienced.
