SEISMIC REINFORCED MASONRY DESIGN IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE 2009 IBC/THE2008 MSJC CODE

~OU9 h reinforced masonry is one of the most widely used forms of construction in the Caribbean, especially for multi-story apartments, condominiums, etc" its design and construction is typically not compliant with seismic codes hence considered inappropriate for the many territories of the Caribbean that are earthquake prone, A main reason for this among professionals is the lack of British seismic masonry design codes given our British educational heritage,

Furthermore, there has been a focus on commercial and institutional structures emphasizing other structural materials, resulting in masonry not being considered a core topic at tertiary level educational institutes.

However, over the past decade or so, new developmental directions and increased awareness of the Caribbean's earthquake hazard have caused a considerable demand for information on seismic reinforced masonry design.

This latest seminar is meant to address this demand. Consistent with the adoption of the U.S seismic codes as the model for Caribbean use, this seminar introduces the participant to the fundamental aspects of seismic reinforced masonry design as presented in the main reference documents ofthese codes.
