    The Roots

Year 1963... A dream... A proposal to Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister

o India to set up an Institute under the name o Institute or Planning and

Administration o National Economy... A study tour o Europe & a man. The

roots o an institute with a dierence. An institute oriented towards the

promotion o corporate growth, based on innovation and entrepreneurship in

harmony with national economic planning objectives, aiming at a sustainable

and ethically acceptable growth rate. Conceptualised by Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri,

Indias leading economic visionary, The Indian Institute o Planning and

Management was ormally registered in the year 1973. Ater completing his

    M. Sc., Ph.D. & D.Sc. rom the School o Economics, Berlin, Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri

worked with leading organisations and institutions like HLL, Indian Institute

o Advanced Studies, Shimla, XLRI , Jamshedpur (as a Proessor o Economics)

& IIM, Bangalore (as a Proessor o Economics), beore resigning rom his

prestigious job at IIM Bangalore to start what is today regarded as Indias

Greatest Academic Movement... The IIPM Movement!

The irst residential Full-Time Post Graduate Diploma Programme commenced

on 12th August, 1974, with students selected through admission tests-cum-

interviews held in Delhi, Kolkata, Bombay and Bangalore. Admission tests-

cum-interviews have so ar been held in over 18 cities, namely, Ahmedabad,

Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Delhi,

Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chennai, Patna and Trivandrum.

    Dr. Malay Chaudhuri,

Founder Director o IIPM & the

author o the path breaking best

    seller The Great Indian Dream

The IIPM programme is today regarded as the only course with a WIDER

COVERAGE than MBA/MBE courses taught anywhere else in the country

because o its integration with National Economic Planning and a compulsory

Marketing specialization , making it the most INTELLECTUALLY STIMULATING

course in India. In the light o globalization, IIPM aims to create a new

generation o globally competent entrepreneurial managers, who can

ace with conidence emerging challenges o international markets, while

remaining committed to remove massive poverty o Indian masses within

    a generation.

Realising the huge demand in the Indian economy or skilled management

graduates, IIPM decided to oer its world class courses to a larger student

base spread across smaller Indian towns - still deprived o quality higher

education opportunities. Hence, in 2009 IIPM launched two new ailiate

institutes - IIPM School o Business & Economy (ISBE) and IIPM Centre

or Higher Education (ICHE). While ISBE promises to oer the same IIPM

experience or one and all, ICHE oers to prepare students to take up careers

in dierent specialised unctional areas like HR, Finance, Marketing, Marketing

Communication and Inormation Technology. The ICHE programme is being

oered under the aegis o one o Indias largest multi-interest consulting

    conglomerate Planman.

    4/24

The IIPM programme was conceptualised in 1973 keeping

in mind the unortunate act that education in India till

then had still remained primarily oriented towards the

needs o the private sector and had overlooked the

speciic require ments o the public sector. We had even

ailed to do justice to the private sector in as much as

we had not succeeded in impressing upon the students

the basic ramework within which the private sector had

to operate in our country. The scope and role o the

private sector in our country, in the context o national

economic planning, was quite distinct rom that o the

private sector in the ree market economies originally

    developed through colonial exploitation.

Problems o development o the private and the public

sectors were, thereore, to be studied and analyzed

careully in the background o national economic

planning. Otherwise, we would not be able to translate

the laudable goals o plans into physical realities,

however sophisticated the planning models may be.

The Indian Institute o Planning and Management had

thus set beore it the twin tasks: to reorient education

and research towards the needs o both the sectors and

to establish the link between the national economic

planning and the development o private enterprises

    in our country.

As an educational institute, IIPM aimed at developing

a three dimensional personality in its students, viz (1)

pursuit o knowledge, (2) commitment to economic,

social and cultural uplitment o masses and (3) cultivation

o taste or literature, ine arts etc.

With changing times and near dismantling o the

Planning Commission in India, IIPM aims to reorient

the IIPM programme to the new realities o the Indian

economic system while remaining committed to the

basic philosophy o global humanism. In act, while India

unortunately abandons principles o National Economic

Planning, intellectuals around the world are waking up

to the inevitable need or International Planning in the

search o a more humane and sustainable society as man

is becoming increasingly alienated rom the society and

violence - both internal and external - is becoming a

trademark o the ree market iscal bottom line oriented

driven system. Thus the need to re-ocus on welare

concepts has actually acquired greater importance

today. To make a happier and humane society, uture

entrepreneurs and managers need to understand not

just concepts that are taught in traditional B-Schools

around the globe, but also concepts o International

Planning and Humanitarian Economics, which IIPM

    aims to impart.

The IIPM programme, thereore, is not a simple MBA,

although it might be recognised as one. It is ar more

than what the best B-Schools across the world have ever

conceptualised. It is a programme in entrepreneurship

(which helps you become not just a manager but much

beyond) with compulsory specialisations in Marketing,

Economics and International Planning. In act, the

Economics part o the curriculum is by itsel at par with a

Masters programme in Economics. Apart rom the above

specialisations, students are required to choose another

extra specialisation o their choice (which could be in

Finance or HR) and an additional super-specialisation

    rom a choice o 6 unctional areas.

The IIPM programme urther incorporates World-Class

global exposure through the three phase structure that

every student undergoes viz. 1) A compulsory global tour

    o a developed country like Switzerland/Germany/USA

etc. that exposes them to the unctioning o leading

global corporations and institutions. 2) Compulsory

exposure to the classes/seminars o globally renowned

aculty members o leading B-Schools rom all over the

world. 3) Constant interaction with students rom all

over the world who come to study/spend a semester

    at the Institute.

Having said all that, what really makes the big dierence

in the lives o students joining the IIPM movement is

perhaps the unique Leadership, Personality Developm ent

and Mentorship Programme at the institute. From one to

all, every student typically deines it as a lie changing

experience. The programme helps creating exceptional

communicators, orators, public speakers and leaders out

o each and every student in the Institute, irrespective

o their backgrounds. These are some o the key reasons

that students o the Institute not only get exceptional

placements, but also get personalities, which they can

be proud o or the rest o their lives.

    Indian Thoughts... Global Perspective...

Mrs. Suroma Chaudhuri, one o the ounding members o

IIPM society at a relie camp or the poor.

Globally renowned Marketing Guru Dr. Philip Kotler

during his session with students in IIPM along with

    Proessor Shouvick Dutta

In India, IIPM aims at initiating training and research on problems

o development that must be solved or realisingThe Great Indian

Dream o a healthy, educated and employed India.

As an educational institute, we aim at developing a three dimensional personality in our students, viz (1) pursuit o knowledge,

    (2) commitment to economic, social and cultural uplitment o masses and

    (3) cultivation o taste or literature, ine arts etc.

It has been observed that MBA level education is oered to students o all graduation

streams (History, Biology, Engineering etc.), thereore, making it obvious that MBA

Education academically has nothing to do with graduation. Thus, IIPM pioneered the

3 year Intregreated Full Time Programme or Undergraduate students wherein, they

do the same IIPM programme in the second and third year. In the frst year a bridge

course to planning & entrepreneurship programme is given to this students. So that

Each year, more than 700 companies come to campus to make presentations and to interview students. For

the same purpose, IIPM has oices in Delhi as well as in Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune,

Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Toronto, London, Dubai & Singapore.

Last year too saw a record o more than 700 companies visiting the IIPM campus or placements. All the eligible

students who required placements got placed rom the campus itsel. It has been observed that more than 70%

o each class usually accepts oers rom companies that recruit on campus. Many students use IIPM resources

to conduct networked job searches, targeting smaller companies, entrepreneurial ventures, and not-or-proit

    organisations.

The Institutes Strategic Management Group (SMG) assists eligible students in securing suitable jobs/trimester

projects. For this purpose, the o ice keeps eective contacts with irms all over India, as well as globally maintaining

and perorming liaison work between possible employers and the Institutes students. Students must, however,

note that the Institute is a place or serious academic pursuit and not an agency to provide employment. No ee

is charged or the service and no binding obligation to ind a job/trimester project or any student is accepted

    by the Institute.

    It has been a wonderul

experience to be apart o I IPMs placement

    process. We are impressed

    with the quality o education

    imparted and exposure given

    to the students.
