Disclaimer

This is a Google doodle, Amul ad, Oreo ad and minimalist poster-free quiz. Really. Now shut up.

I couldn’t get enough sleep for the last few days, you-know-why. For your own sake, don’t angry me. (Grammatical mistake, you say? Dare you show me.)

I may be on the side of the angels, but don’t think for one second that I am one of them. Don’t angry me. I am thy God. I am Sherlock Holmes Jr.

that became popular during World War II; it is typically seen in graffiti. Its origins are debated, but the phrase and the distinctive accompanying doodle became associated with GIs in the 1940s. In Britain, the graffiti is known as "Mr Chad" or just "Chad".

Author Charles Panati says that in the United States "the mischievous face and the phrase became a national joke..." The major _ graffiti fad ended in the 1950s, but today people all over the world still scribble the character and “___ __ ___" in schools, trains, and other similar public areas.

Erdős-Bacon number. It is the sum of one's Erdős number - which

measures the "collaborative distance" in authoring mathematical papers between that person and Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős - and one's Bacon number - which represents the number of links, through roles in films, by which the individual is separated from American actor Kevin Bacon. The lower the number, the closer a person is to Erdős and Bacon.

Agnolo Firenzoula was an Italian poet. In Della perfetta (Of the Perfect beauty of a woman) he advised the following to noble women:

Close the mouth at the right corner with a suave and nimble movement, and open it at the left side, as if you were smiling secretly - not in an artificial manner, but as though unconsciously - this is not affectation, if it is done in moderation and in a restrained and graceful manner and accompanied by innocent coquetry and certain movements of the eyes.

What is the Pinocchio Paradox?(Hint: Have you guys heard the story of a

barber who cuts hair of only those and all those villagers in his village who don’t cut their hair on their own?)

Page 68: IIT BHU The Not-so-funny General Quiz finals

Mahendra Mohan Das

Answer

The paradox explains the dilemma of what would happen if Pinocchio says “My nose will grow now”.

If he is lying, his nose should grow, but if his nose grows, then he is actually telling the truth. On the other hand, if he is telling the truth and his nose starts growing, then it will violate the condition that his nose grows when he is lying.

The site was identified by Soviet scientists in 1971. While drilling, large quantities of methane gas were released, creating an environmental problem and posing a potential danger to the people of the nearby villages.

Fearing the release of further poisonous gases from the cavern, the scientists decided to burn it off. At that time, expectations were that the gas would burn within days, but it is still burning, four decades after it was set on fire.

The prize was originally known as the Y-McConnell Prize, after the company Y-McConnell began sponsoring the event in 1968; it became commonly known as the “Y Prize" or simply "the Y“.

When administration of the prize was transferred to the Y Prize Foundation in 2002, the title sponsor became the investment company X Group, which opted to retain “Y" as part of the official title of the prize.

Hence, it is now known as X Y Prize.

What?

DMA Design (now known by a different name) was working on a racing game called Race and Chase. The idea was "to produce a fun, addictive and fast multi-player car racing and crashing game".

As far as the play testers were concerned, the game sucked, except for one glitch which made the police in the game go crazy for no reason. Instead of politely pulling you over, the cops would ram you off the road as their AI was accidentally trying to drive through the player. Suddenly everyone was crashing non-stop. (contd.)

Page 99: IIT BHU The Not-so-funny General Quiz finals

Mahendra Mohan Das

What?

Play testers thought this was freaking hilarious, and in fact abandoned the missions just to screw around and see what kind of mayhem they could cause. The designers decided to not only leave the psychotic cops in there, but build the entire game around the kind of ridiculously violent car chases caused by the glitch.

What did this lead to?
