Outline of Biohorizon 2005 Technical Review Sessions: Technical Review Session 1: Approaches in Biocatalyst Development Strain development as an upstream process entails identification, characterization, and development of novel microbial isolates with improved properties for application in industrial bioconversions. This session focuses on identification of desired genetic manipulations through principles of Systems Biology, realization of these manipulations using Recombinant DNA technology and finally, development of a microbial strain with improved properties to be used at an industrial scale. Technical Review Session 2: Advances in Bioprocess Development Bioprocess development involves the creation and optimization of conditions for the effective utilization of a biocatalyst for an industrial application. This session would review the recent advances made in design, scale up and control of bioreactors Technical Review Session 3: Downstream Processing Downstream processing involves recovery of the product after the production using membrane based separation methods, chromatographic separations etc. In the case of biological products where the activity of the product has to be recovered and maintained, methods such as protein refolding and product formulation are also an integral part of downstream processing. This session focuses on current breakthroughs and developments in downstream processing. Technical Poster Sessions The symposium offers a unique platform to the Indian Scientific fraternity to discuss, debate and promote their research amongst the Scientific and Technical community of the country. The sessions are as follows: Session 1: Novel biocatalysts for biotechnological applications Session 2: Innovative technologies in bioprocessing and product Recovery Session 3: Biomaterials and Instrumentation

Outline of Biohorizon 2005 Panel Discussion: Opportunities in Biotechnology Careers The growing scale of the biotechnology industry in established fields coupled with the increasing breadth of application of biotechnology has created an unprecedented requirement for skilled manpower. Each year the top academic institutions in the country produce a large number of highly trained personnel in an attempt to fulfill this growing demand. However, a large number of people are unable to make their way into the industrial workforce due to a lack of information on the part of the industry as well as the student community. This discussion is aimed at bridging the existing information gap and at ensuring a better utilization of the large, highly qualified human resource available to industry throughout the country.

Panel Discussion: IPR Issues in Biotechnology: The issue of intellectual property takes center stage this year especially in the pharma/biotech sector as the new product patent regime sets in. While the industry, which had relied primarily on process re-engineering, till date prepares to reinvent itself, the policymakers are swamped with concerns regarding the content of the new law and has to cater to the interests of the domestic industry, foreign investors as well as the consumers. In this session we would like to address this issue from both perspectives and it will also be an ideal time to look upon and analyze how the first few weeks have fared in the new regime. Emerging Areas in Biotechnology: The session will showcase the emerging fields in Biotechnology. It aims to present to the audience an overview of subjects in biotechnology that will be the crucial components of tomorrow's technology. The 21st century has been called the generation of biotechnology by all, the layman, the intelligentsia and the mass media. We seek to address this statement more thoroughly, by seeking to advertise to the audience the precise ways by which this "up-coming" field will affect all our lives in the near future.
