Year 8s go back in time at the Natural History MuseumOn Wednesday 18th January, Year 8 students visited the Natural History Museum to study volcanoes and earthquakes that have happened all around our planet, from recent times to incidents that occurred thousands of years ago!

The students spent the trip learning more about their current topic on Tectonic Hazards and had the chance to go on an earthquake simulator. Students were able to see rocks that had erupted from a volcano and watch video clips from across the world of earthquakes that have changed the shape of our planet.

On top of this, the Year 8s were also able to visit the ‘Jurassic’ and ‘Living World’ sections of the museum which included some excellent models of dinosaurs and a life size model of a blue whale!Mr D Houghton, Geography Teacher

On Friday 13th January, Year 8 students took part in a Revision and Study Skills Focus Day. The aims of the day were to encourage students to organise and plan their revision by developing independent learning skills and strategies ready for their approaching exams.

Head of Achievement for Year 8, Heather Pearson, said “I am extremely pleased with our Year 8 students; their response to the revision and study skills day was positive and purposeful. I hope the students have been able to put their study skills into practice during their recent exams.”

“I found this revision session useful because I learnt lots of good tips”John Devlin, Year 8 student

“Everything was laid out well and the sessions showed me how I should revise properly”Anthony Cannings, Year 8 student

“The session was really fun and it helped me to come up with useful ideas to revise”Holly Burden, Year 8 student

Year 9 Business Study students enter the Coca-Cola Real Business Challenge 2017 On Tuesday 31st of January, six Year 9 students (Mia Allum, Lilly Boxell-Smeaton, Rhianna Davies, Kira Deadman, Amelai Hamm and George Singleton) went to Bristol to take part in the regional final of Coca-Cola’s Real Business Challenge.

The Year 9 students competed in an enterprise competition completing a series of tasks, which included recording a radio advert and creating a communications package for The Special Olympics Great Britain. This is an organisation that encourages people withintellectual disabilities to aspire and challenge themselves to compete in different sporting events. The students then had to present their final idea in front of approximately 100 people! Although they did not win, they made the school proud and competed admirably.

This was a regional final (having got through the district rounds where over 90 schools competed). Highcliffe school was one of only two Year 9 groups to have got through to the regional final, the rest being Year 10. This, I think you would agree, is a massive achievement!! Well done to all the students involved. Mr K Tyler, Business Studies Teacher

GCSE Poetry LiveA collection of our Y10 and Y11 students (all of which are budding poet enthusiasts) attended the GCSE Poetry Live conference which was held at the Forum Venue in Bath on 26th January.

The students were entertained by a variety of well regarding poets, all of which feature in the AQA English Literature curriculum. Each poet talked through the in-depth creation process behind some of their poems, providing the students with an increased level of insight into the complexity and meaningfulness of poetry.

The students particularly enjoyed John Agard for his unique and energetic performance of his poems, which combine acute social observation, puckish wit and a riotous imagination to thrilling effect.

Our students behaved impeccably and were a true credit to the school throughout the day.

Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January 2017 - Year 8s meet Holocaust survivor

“A small group of Year 8 students attended the Holocaust Memorial Talk which was held at Corfe Hills School. Firstly, we sat down and listened to a speaker from the Holocaust Foundation talk about how there are less and less Holocaust survivors. We were then introduced to Henry Schachter, who was born in 1939 in Berlin and was a survivor of the Holocaust. Henry then gave a talk about his life on the run and what he experienced. After a question and answer session, candles were lit to commemorate the millions of people who died, ”Ben Shutler, Year 8 student

Safer Internet Day 2017Highcliffe School joined the global Safer Internet Day campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology.

Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day will took place on Tuesday 7th February 2016, with the theme ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’.

Celebrated in over 100 countries, Safer Internet Day brought together hundreds of schools and organisations right across the UK and globally to ‘be the change’ and help create a better internet. During the course of the week, all students in years 7-11 discussed ‘The Power of Image’ and how this can affect their digital footprint in sessions led by their form tutor.

Online safety is of utmost importance and is a topic that is re-visited with students regularly. Over the next few weeks, assemblies to all students in years 7-11 will focus on this, with follow-up information being sent to students and parents.

For more general advice on internet safety for parents and carers, visit:https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-centre/parents-and-carers https://www.nspcc.org.uk/ShareAware https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/
