• What do you think is the biggest fear we might have as nation right now?
• Truman had won a slim victory to be elected as president
• Created the “Fair Deal”• Congress did little to
embrace Truman’s policies
• With the start of the Korean War, America’s attention and resources would shift focus and end his Fair Deal
• American’s believed Truman’s foreign policy wasn’t working
• Truman would not be running again
• American’s wanted someone they trusted to deal with the issues of the Cold War
• Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, the general who organized D-Day became president in 1953
• Believed that the key to victory in the Cold War was a combo of a strong military and a strong economy
• How would having a strong economy effect the Cold War?– US could show that free enterprise creates a more
prosperous society – Economic prosperity would prevent Communism
from gaining support in the US
• Less money $ a large army
• More money for atomic weapons of all kinds.
• From 1,000 to18,000 bombs by 1961
• Fighting small wars to stop the spread of Communism were too expensive (like Korea)
• Instead threaten to use nuclear weapons, this policy is called Massive Retaliation
•Communism and the threat of the atomic bomb dominated life for Americans and their leaders in the 1950s.•The threat of an atomic attack against the United States forced Americans to prepare for a surprise attack.
• What was Truman’s economic plan for the United States called?
•Fair Deal
Eisenhower believed in order to win the Cold War the US needed to have a combo of what?
•strong military and a strong economy
What is the idea behind “More BANG for your Buck”?
•Less money $ a large army•More money for atomic weapons
What is Massive Retaliation?
Threatening to use nuclear weapons to get our way
• Bomb shelters and air raids drills were a result of this fear
Duck and Cover
• Although Americans tried to protect themselves, experts realized that for every person killed instantly by a nuclear blast, four more would later die from fallout, the radiation left over after the blast.
• Some families built fallout shelters in their backyards and stocked them with canned food.
Up to 13 minutes
What did Americans build in their backyards to hopefully save them from a nuclear fallout?
•Fallout shelters
1986 -- The Chernobyl disaster, was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, resulting in a severe release of radioactivity into the environment following a massive power excursion which destroyed the reactor.
The Scenario:• Nuclear war has been declared. The only people that will survive the attack
must be inside the bomb shelter. Here is the problem. The bomb shelter only has space and supplies for 4 people. In order to survive, 4 people must stay inside the shelter for at least 3 months. At hand is the survival of humans on Earth. The repopulation of Earth will depend on the 4 people that survive,
The Task:• Your group is to decide, based on the information given, which people will be
allowed to remain (and live) and which people will be left out of the shelter (and die). Carefully evaluate all the information given. Consider their health, experience, age, gender, talents, intelligence, etc.
All decisions must be unanimous:• The majority does not rule. This means that every person being voted out must
agree to go (and die). Each group must decide for themselves the voting process. Some may do a “secret ballot”. Other groups may decide to vote openly. Each group member must give their reasons (validation) for wanting to stay. Consider what each person can contribute to life after the bomb.
Next:• On a separate sheet of paper, list the 7 people that will stay in the shelter.
Explain and give reasons why each person was allowed to stay in the shelter. Also, list the people that were chosen to leave and give reasons for this decision. Next, choose a leader for your group to present the decisions to the rest of the class.
