President’s Message
As I step into the role as 35th President of the Irish Ladies Golf Union, I am privileged to be in this position and feel an immense amount of excitement for the year ahead. I am following in the footsteps of truly dedicated Presidents, who have set exceptionally high standards, which I intend to uphold.
I became involved with handicapping and rules in my home club of Co. Longford in 1980 and my love for the administration of golf grew from there. My involvement with the ILGU stems back to early 2000 when I became the Connacht Chair of Rules, this was followed by five years as National Chair of Rules and Board member of the ILGU.
It is a time of change for the ILGU, as it has been over the past number of years and I believe we are moving in a positive direction, to become more progressive and inclusive for all. I am looking forward to the future of golf in Ireland, especially surrounding the potential prospect of One Governing Body for Golf in Ireland, as long as tradition and change can sit comfortably alongside each other.
2016 has been an impressive year for the ILGU on the achievement front. A Bronze Medal for the Ladies’ Team representing Ireland at the Word Amateur Team Championships was an outstanding accolade as was the historic win for the Girls’ Home International Team at the Home International Matches. The Irish Senior European Team once again reached great heights, as they overcame Belgium in an exciting final to become European Team Champions for the second time in recent years.
It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the Curtis Cup Matches at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, where I had the pleasure of witnessing the world’s best amateur players, including our own Leona Maguire, Olivia Mehaffey and Maria Dunne, as the GB&I team won the trophy from team USA with a total score of 11.5 – 8.5 points.
The successes of 2016 alone show the dedication, hard work and commitment afforded to the game by all players, coaches, volunteers, parents and family members and I have no doubt 2017 will bring more of the same. I look forward to seeing players progress, enjoy and relish the game of golf, which we all love so much.
I have met many golfers throughout the country in my capacity as a Rules Official over the last number of years and I am looking forward to meeting members, visiting clubs and being able to watch some fantastic club golf and teams during my two year tenure.
I look forward to representing the Union for another busy and successful year and I wish you great golf, friendships and the health to enjoy it all in 2017.
