How many resolu-

tions have you madeover the years that werejust a faded memorywithin a few weeks?

The problem withresolutions is that theyare often designed todrastically change oneslifestyle, such as lose 50pounds, join a gym andgo five to six days aweek, or quit smokingimmediately. Those areall admirable resolu-tions but dauntingwhen one looks at thebig picture.

Statistics show thatgym membershipsincrease by as much as30 percent in January.However, the bestintentions often fade ina matter of weeks, andsoon, the only thing that

may visit the gym isyour monthly bankaccount.

If you're committedto leading a healthierlife in 2014 and the gymis the route to your des-tination, that's fantastic!Make sure, though tovisit the gym.

There are otherhealthy steps you cantake that will add to the

quality of your life andthat will make a healthydifference. Followingare five changes you canmake to your life that

1. Walking: Walk atleast 30 minutes a day.Physical activity isimportant to everyhuman being but every-one exercises at differ-ent rates. Walking issomething that mostpeople can do, and bytaking a half hour a day,you will increase yourcardiovascular fitness,help aid in preventionof type 2 diabetes andhigh blood pressure,and be in a bettermood. Taking a briskwalk as you enjoy yourfavorite music will buildyour endurance andincrease your lungcapacity. Enjoy the crispcool air and enjoy the

2. Drink more water:Since humans are madeup of mostly water, ourbodies need an ampledaily supply to maintainhydration. The rule ofthumb has always been

with friends helps to reinforceour desire for belonging, makesus feel socially connected, and

helps reduce stress and depres-sion. Maybe we should take acue from children and be sillyand laugh a little more, everyday. After all, laughs are free andvery contagious.

What did you want to bewhen you grew upand did you ever won-

der what your favoritecelebrity or hero was like asa child?

Some of us wanted to bedoctors, lawyers, firefighters,ballerinas or explorers.Regardless of whether youknew what you wanted todo, you may have had quali-ties that drove you in that

specific direction, even ifyou may not have realized itas you were growing up.

Steve Fossett was some-one who lived for adventure.Some of you may recognizethat name. Fossett was thefirst explorer to solo circum-navigate the world, nonstop,in a hot air balloon.

You may be thinking,What does Steve Fossetthave to do with Lincoln?

In December 2009, Ibecame good friends withLinda and Steve Dansby inLincoln. As new friends do,we learned about each otherand our lives. Linda and Iwere at lunch one day andshe asked, Do you knowwho Steve Fossett was?

I replied that I did and she

proudly stated, Steve wasmy brother.

Fossett was flying a planeover the Sierra Nevada,when he tragically disap-peared in September 2007.We can all learn of Fossettsaccomplishments by read-ing his book, Chasing theWind, or looking him up onthe Internet.

I, however, wanted to findout about this exceptionalman from a sisters view-point.

With more than 100adventurous feats under hisbelt, I envisioned Fossettbeing a typical boy when hewas young - climbing trees,getting into mischief andplaying with reckless aban-don. According to myresearch, Fossett said,When I was 12-years-old, I

of the seven continents.Dansby remembers atime when her brothergot into a predicamentthat most little boys donthave.

I think Steve was about5 or 6-years-old and I wasjust a baby when heclimbed up on the roof ofthe house, she said. Idont know why he did itbut he climbed into the

chimney and got stuck!Dansby said she was

too young to rememberthis story but that it wastold to her over the years.The world-renownedexplorer seemed to have asense of adventure from avery young age.

A touching story thatDansby shared is also oneof her favorite memories.She remembers, as a

young girl, the first gift herbig brother bought her.

He bought me apound of M&Ms. It wasthe first thing he everbought me with his ownmoney, Dansby said.Ive always loved M&Ms,even back then.

Because he was fiveyears older and she was agirl, they didnt spend as

much time together asher two brothers did.

When we talk about herbrother from time to time,I always notice a look onDansbys face - a look of ayounger sister who misses

her big brother, one whois extremely proud of him

and who wishes they hadmore years together.

Her brothers given

name was James StephenFossett but Dansby saysshe doesnt remember

anyone calling him any-thing but Steve. In honorof her late brother, Dans-bys granddaughter, whowas born a week after hergreat-uncle disappeared,was given the middlename of James.

As Fossetts adventures

took him to internationalfame, Dansby watchedher brothers accomplish-ments and shared in thecelebrations.

To the world, Fossettwas an explorer in a classof his own, but to Dansby,he was a big brother wholived a full life in so many

ways.Fossett is a true Ameri-

can hero. Heroes are indi-viduals who are admiredfor their courage, inspira-tion and who helpimprove the world.

Because of Fossettsadventures, failures and

successes, the world haslearned an enormousamount about aviation.

Fossett was remarkablebecause of his extremetenacity and courage,which allowed him toteach the world amazingfacts and make a sisterproud.


On May 6,2009, thefamily ofSteve Fossettwas present-ed with thisNevada State

Resolution 8.It cites thathis spirit ofadventurebegan as ear-ly as age 3,when Fossett"discoveredthe starterbutton on acar and pro-ceeded toexperiment,jerking thecare repeat-edly downthe street forseveralblocks."

may have been blessedwith a new Christmas kit-ten.

Introducing a new petinto the house should beeasy, one would think. Toincrease your chance for asuccessful transition,there are several simplerules to be followed.

1. Transport your newfamily member home in asturdy carrier. It is good toget the kitten used tobeing in the carrier whilein the car and will bode

well for future trips in thecar to the veterinarian orgroomer.2. Have a designated

safe and quiet room forthe initial introduction. Itshould be a small room

that has been scanned fordangerous items: electri-cal cords, rubber bands,paper clips, toxic plants,nooks and crannies to getstuck in, strings, cords,thread and small itemsthat can be swallowed.3. Provide a litter box

(low sides for tiny kittens)

with similar litter from theadoption site, water andfood bowls, a scratchingpost, bed and select toys.

Do not use socks, strings,bells, thread or small itemsas toys. They can be swal-lowed by a curious kitten.4. After several days in

the more confined room,allow the kitten to explore

with direct supervision.This will enable the kittento become more familiar

with your house withoutthe danger of falling fromhigh places, chewing on

inappropriate items orgetting stuck in smallplaces. Slowly introducing

the kitten to the rest ofyour house will allow youto monitor the kittens

Most people worryabout poisonous plants.The University of Califor-nia at Davis VeterinaryMedical Teaching Hospi-

tal can offer suggestionson poisonous plants andactually has a Toxic PlantGarden grown in con-junction with the Schoolof Veterinary Medicine toacquaint the public withcommon poisonousplants common in thisarea.

When choosing plantsfor the garden, it is advis-able to avoid the toxic

plants that cause themajority of pet poison-ings.

Many of the most com-monly ingested poison-ous plants are not land-scape plants but areeither gift plants, house-plants or patio plants.

Lilies, Easter lilies, Star

Gazer lilies, Lily of the Val-ley, Asparagus Fern(which is in the lily family)

and aloe vera (also in thelily family) are frequentcauses of poisoning andare especially poisonous

to cats.Amaryllis, anemone,

daffodils, chrysanthe-mums, cyclamens, philo-dendrons, jade plants andcycads are also frequentcauses of pet poisonings.Keep these out of reach ofpets and monitor petactivity closely. When the

plants begin to fade, dis-pose of the plants in asecure garbage containerthat is not assessable to

pets.Although many land-

scape plants such as ole-

ander, yew, daphne, fox-glove and angels trumpetare extremely poisonous,they are only infrequentlyeaten by pets. However, ifyour pet is bored and digsand chews plants regular-ly, you may want to elimi-nate these plants as well.

If you have a planteater, do check with theUCD School of Veterinary

Medicine for a completelist and inventory yourgarden for poisonousplants but keep in mindthat it is nearly impossibleto eliminate every haz-ardous plant from thelandscape.

It is also important toaddress why a pet is eat-

ing garden plants. Is thepet getting adequate exer-cise? Is the pet bored? In

addition to pet-proofingyour landscape, you maywish to speak to a veteri-nary to address behav-ioral problems.

While many pet ownersworry about poisonousplants, they are oftenoblivious to the evengreater problem of pesti-cides, herbicides and gar-den products used in the

landscape. Pets oftenhave much greater con-tact with these productsthan their human ownerssince they often roll in thedirt, dig, play on the lawn,and are lower to theground.

pest problems will oftenresolve themselves.

If pesticides or herbi-cides are absolutely neces-sary, consider using theleast toxic method. Organ-ic gardening is quite main-stream these days andthere are many sources of

information. (Note: organ-ic methods are usuallysafer and less toxic but thisis not always true. Read

labels!)In addition, pesticides,

herbicides and fertilizersmust be stored securely,away from pets. Manypesticides, herbicides, fer-tilizers and other plantproducts are extremelytoxic to pets.

Some products are toxicin very small doses, suchas might be sprinkled inthe garden. Others, such

as snail baits made of ironphosphate, are consideredsafe when used in smallamounts in the garden butthese can be very toxic ifthe pet chews up theentire box! Keep gardenproducts in a secure place.Dispose of containers

properly. And considerusing the least toxic prod-uct or method available.

Keeping our pets safe is

important. Plus, it is alsogood for us, for birds and
