The move was made by Mid-Ironβs ownership late last year. The short nine close to Gleneagles in unincor-porated Lemont would shutter its fun but lightly-played layout. However, the range, with well-maintained grass tees, would remain open.
Thatβs the plan in effect this spring as well. As the photo above shows, most of the course is now over-grown β the first hole, adjacent to the range and along Bell Rd., was mowed whence we last buzzed by β with all focus on the range, where a solitary player was socking balls on a cool day.
Ideally, the decision will be reversed someday, but it would take time and money to get the greens back into the remarkably good shape recalled from when Mid-Iron was going strong.
The reverse: Just a few miles away, Woodbine,
shuttered at the end of last season and destined to be the first park in the village of Homer Glen, is in perfect shape, with fairways and greens ready for players. But the course remains closed while the village figures out exactly what the park should look like. (The clubhouse is supposed to become the village hall.)
Logic says Homer Glen should have made a deal with the Ludwig family, the previous owners, to operate Woodbine this year, as they did last year. Right now, the village has a fine piece of property villagers canβt access.
In limbo: Add the Oak Club of Genoa to the courses in question list. The 1971 Charles Maddox de-sign in DeKalb County has been on the auction block twice in the last three years. The courseβs website still lists 2014 prices.

Spiethβs first domino fell at Deere RunFew people who have been around him
for even a few moments were surprised when Jordan Spieth said heβd be back at the John Deere Classic this July, even
if β we presume β his fresh new Green Jacket β stays back home in Dallas.
Even before winning the Masters, Spieth had shown loyalty and commitment uncommon in the modern-day professional golfer, and heβs continued to do so.
That two-day whirlwind tour of New York media outlets, from David Lettermanβs talkfest to cable shows of every stripe? Most recent Masters winners partake, then stay home for the weekend. The Heritage Classic goes on without them.
Not Spieth. Heβd signed up to play, so he played. And when most observers believed an opening-round 74 would give him a weekend off, he bounces back with a 62 on Friday, makes the cut, and eventually finishes tied for 11th.
Itβs hard not to root for a kid like that. And yes, at 21, heβs still called a kid. At least, until his senior class at Texas graduates later this month.
None of this would have happened β at least, not yet β had Spieth stayed in college in Austin, a great town to go to college in.
But he felt himself ready, and has proved himself righter than right.
Turning pro and making the most of a hand-ful of exemptions carried him to the John Deere Classic two years ago, where all he did was con-tend all week and win the whole shooting match
on Sunday, improbably and dramatically.Honestly, who holes out from a greenside
bunker on the 18th to make a playoff, then sur-vives to the fifth hole before winning?
As a 19-year-old, the first teen to win on the circuit since 1931?
Like the Maltese Falcon, it was the stuff that dreams were made of. But this was real.
So is Spieth. The Deere was the first domino. That earned
him a full Tour card, all the Fed-Ex Cup points he had accumulated so far in 2013, and best of all in retrospect, a berth in the 2014 Masters.
There, he finished tied for second and served notice that the lightning bolt he threw from that bunker in Silvis was not a one-time wonder.
After some close calls, his winter victories in the Australian Open β he even took the time
to study the history of the tournament before-hand, which endeared him to his hosts Down Under β and in Tiger Woodsβ invitational set the stage for his dominance on the Tour this year, highlighted by the 1-2-2-1 run that climaxed at Augusta National.
Now? Well, heβs one of the few in the U.S. Open field who has played Chambers Bay, doing so in the U.S. Amateur.
How good would it be for Spieth to return to Silvis as winner of the seasonβs first two majors?
It will be great fun seeing what happens next. βββββWeβre pleased to welcome Luke Cella,
executive director of the Midwest Association of Golf Course Superintendents, to our pages for a regular column on agronomy. His first is on the need for that necessary evil, aeration.

adrift with Fastert finishing birdie-bogey.Przybylski was 3-over with five holes to play,
then birdied the 14th and 17th to put some pres-sure on, but had to settle for par at the 18th.
Saturdayβs leaders had tough Sundays.
By Tim CroninReporting from Crete
βββββA player who can putt is never out of it in the
Will County Amateur.Thatβs been proven time and again over the
years, and Michael Fastert of Des Plaines proved it again on April 19. His final round 2-under-par 70 at Balmoral Woods earned him the first big amateur title of the year in Illinois, and with it, a chance to pose in the traditional Brown Jacket.
Fastert finished at even-par 144, a stroke ahead of Bolingbrookβs Paul Dagys and Frankfortβs Glenn Przybylski. Kyle Slattery of Rockfort and former champion John Ehrgott of Edwards tied for fourth at 4-over 148.
Poised on Balmoral Woodsβ slick greens, Fastert birdied four of his first 12 holes in the fi-nal round, more than making up for the 2-over 74 he posted on Saturday, and the surge brought him back into the scrap. With first-round tri-leaders Joe Skrabutenas, Ryan Herter and John Wright fading fast β Wrightβs 79 was the best final round of the three β Fastert took the lead and hung on.
Fastert birdied three of Balmoralβs four par-5s, including the 12th, which moved him to 2-un-der for the tournament.
Meanwhile, Dagys was all over the map ear-ly, with a bogey at the par-5 first, an eagle 3 at the fifth and a double-bogey 5 at the fourth, but made a real push with three straight birdies to open the back nine. His birdie on the par-3 16th got him back to even par for the tournament, and tied with Fastert, but a bogey at the last left Dagys one

Perakis, Streelman win at Augusta9-year-old triumphs in Drive, Chip and Putt; Winfield pro collects Par-3 crystalBy Tim Cronin
Reporting from Augusta, Georgiaβββββ
Effie Perakis has not yet spent 10 years on this earth, but she has an accomplishment on her golf resume that many have dreamed for and few have achieved.
She has won at Augusta National Golf Club. The 9-year-old Glenview resident won the
girls 7-9-year-old division in the 2nd Drive, Chip and Putt competition the Sunday before the Mas-ters at Augusta.
She had finished third in the 8-9 girls bracket of the Little Peoplesβ Championship in Quincy last year, so it wasnβt a complete surprise that she now only showed well in Drive, Chip and Putt qualifying, but won her regional division to ad-vance to Augusta.
Sinking a 30-footer on Augustaβs 18th green β how many old pros over the years would have bought that putt from her if that was possible? β put her over the top, with 22 points to the 20 accu-mulated by Charlie Whorton of Springdale, Ark.
Perakis took sixth in the driving competi-tion, third in chipping and second in putting. That earned her five, eight and nine points, respectively. Whorton won the putting by virtue of a closer first putt, and was fourth in driving, but eighth in chip-ping, accounting for the two-point difference.
Perakis wasnβt the only Illinoisan in the DCP finals. Jimmy Morton of Sugar Grove took eighth
in the Boys 14-15 bracket, while Caroline Smith of Inverness was 10th in the Girls 12-13 division.
One feel-good story at Augusta was followed by another four days later, when Winfield native Kevin Streelman won what nobody wants to win: The Par-3 Contest on the eve of the Masters. Itβs considered a jinx because no winner has gone on to capture the Masters in the same year, but Streelman obviously wasnβt superstitious. He beat Camilo Villegas on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff after they tied at 5-under-par 22.
Better than that, Streelman had already won in a larger sense because of the caddie he used.
Streelman used 13-year-old Ethan Couch of Spruce Grove, Alberta, to carry his bag. Streelman had called the local Make-A-Wish chapter to see if any youngsters wanted to go to the Masters.
Couch did. Streelman called and asked if he wanted to caddie for him in the Par-3 Contest.
Silence on the phone. His parents started cry-ing.
βI just wanted to go to the Masters,β Ethan told ESPN later. βI didnβt expect this.β
Then Streelman found out Couch has a be-nign brain tumor, with the long-term prognosis unknown.
βThis isnβt about me,β Streelman said. βItβs about giving back. Itβs about using the opportu-nity that I have to make someoneβs wish come true.β
That feelingβs even better than winning.

Nicklaus goes for Harbor Shores βtweakβBy Tim Cronin
Reporting from Benton Harbor, Mich.βββββ
Bob McFeeter had a problem. The managing director of Harbor Shores
knew some greens were just too severe for his customers, and also for the PGA of America when it rolled in with the Senior PGA Championship.
Slopes were too steep and there were too few pin placements.
But how to broach the subject with the archi-tect, one Jack Nicklaus?
McFeeter decided to be direct. He created a document with his concerns and possible rem-edies and e-mailed it to the Golden Bear. Then he waited.
His mailbox soon pinged.βMr. Nicklaus understood our concerns,β
McFeeter said. βHe did not oppose changes.βSoon, Nicklaus dispatched chief architect
Carl Goetz and agronomist John Scott to the course, and they got to work. Six greens would be changed.
Ridges, rolls and mounds on the first, second, sixth, 12th, 14th and 16th greens were softened to make putting more palatable and provide more pin placements.
βThe greens are really what makes this golf course what it is,β PGA of America champion-ship boss Kerry Haigh said. βReally, this is just a tweak and improves what is a spectacular golf course.
βOn some holes, we had three or four hole lo-cations we could use, and the players knew where they were coming in. Now, we have six or seven, and the players wonβt know which ones weβll use.β
Fairway grass has replaced rough behind the sixth and 14th greens, to give players options on playing back up to the green. Additionally, stan-dard beach sand in green-fronting bunkers on the sixth and seventh holes, which drove players crazy, has been replaced by standard bunker sand matching the rest of the course. High fescue and dunes grass on the seventh and eighth holes has also been replaced by standard rough.
The Senior PGA returns to Harbor Shores in 2016 and 2018.

It started as a way for a couple of seasoned pros to honor an old pal.
The old pal, who had bestowed countless kindnesses on others over the decades, was so touched by the thought, and by the contest, he un-
derwrote the continuation of it in his will. That, in brief, is why the Radix Cup not only
exists, but is so well-regarded by those who have played in it, today.
The 54th playing is Wed., June 3, at Oak Park Country Club, site of all but a handful of matches over the decades.
Who was this Radix? It was Harry Radix, a dealer in diamonds and other precious gems and for decades, a leader in the American figure skat-ing scene, and an absolute golf nut.
Until his death in 1965, Radix had attended every U.S. Open since 1920, and most every PGA Championship in that era.

He owned Masters badge No. 1.When Ben Hogan nearly collapsed during the
1951 U.S. Open at Merion, whose shoulder was there for the Hawk to lean on? Radixβs shoulder.
In the early 1930s, he decided golf needed a trophy to honor the best season. He created the Radix Trophy, which would go to the scoring champion for the season.
It did until a new PGA of America president came in, got into a feud with the administrator of the tour, and decided that Radixβ award would be replaced because Radix was a friend of his ene-my. Thus was born the Vardon Trophy, named for Harry Vardon, fading away in an English nursing home.
Harry Radix knew everybody in golf, and that universe thought the world of this Chicagoan.
In 1962, close friends Bill Ogden and Errie Ball, the head professionals at North Shore and Oak Park country clubs, respectively, had an idea. Start a pros vs. amateurs match featuring the best players in Illinois, and modeled on the Goldwater Cup in Arizona. They named it after Radix.
The first was played at North Shore. All but two of the subsequent matches have been played at Oak Park, most recently on the first Wednesday of June more often than not.
The Radix has hosted a Whoβs Who of the stateβs pros and amateurs, especially from the Chi-cago area. Five PGA Tour winners have played, most recently D.A. Points. Leaders in the Illinois PGA and CDGAβs point standings fill most of the 24 spots, with places reserved for Oak Parkβs club champion, and the clubβs head pro, Frank Bruno.
Leading the way with 23 appearances over the decades is Hall of Fame amateur Joel Hirsch.
βI think itβs the premier event in Chicago golf,β Hirsch said a few years ago.
As Earl Puckett said in 1989, when he was the head pro at Oak Park, βItβs just pride. You donβt want to lose to the amateurs and they donβt want to lose to us. Itβs a matter of pride on both sides. After itβs all over, we get together and share a drink. Itβs fun.β
Just as rugby has the famous third half, the Radix Cup doesnβt end when the final putt drops. The players and brass from the Illinois PGA and CDGA, which co-administrate the match, retire to the clubβs ballroom for toasts and more, part of the legacy Radix wanted to create.
βThis is our Ryder Cup as a PGA profession-al,β said Bruno, who caddied in three Radixes and will be teeing it up for the ninth time. βItβs got his-tory. Itβs got heritage. Itβs great fun. If you donβt enjoy playing in an event like this, youβre not a golfer.β
A best-ball Nassau format is used, one point for each nine and one for the overall score in each of six matches. Thus, a twosome trailing at the turn can come back and win the back nine to square its match.

Prairie Jewel Illinoisβ practice center includes the indoor building, completed in 2007, including an artificial-turf putting and pitching area (above) and heated hitting bays (right) that open up to the new outdoor facility.
Mike Small took over the Illinois menβs golf program in June of 2000.
Immediately, he had two goals: Make the Fighting Illini consistently competitive, and build a world-class facility for his players β and the womenβs team β to practice at.
βThe day I got here, I started talking about it,β Small said recently in Savoy. βIn order to build a program, you need facilities.β
Usually. But Small, part of the 1988 Big Ten championship team that included Steve Stricker, jump-started a revival that has far surpassed that squadβs success. Thanks to savvy recruiting and solid play, his teams began to climb the ladder.
With the NCAA Regional around the corner, the Illini are rated No. 1 in the Sagarin Rankings, a hundredth of a point ahead of Texas and Florida State, following a 32-stroke rout of the field in the Big Ten Championship, Illinoisβ sixth in the last seven years. It is a season built, one might say, on both the foundation of those previous successes and the practice center envisioned by Small.
Individual wins β more than half of Illinoisβ solo titles have come in the Small era β were fol-lowed by team triumphs. One in the fall of 2001, four in the 2002-03 season, then a lull, then the del-uge. The Fighting Illini have won 40 tournaments since the fall of 2007, including seven this season.
It is not a coincidence that the Demirjian In-door Practice Facility, which includes hitting bays, all the high-tech gadgetry necessary for swing analysis, and a huge pitch-and-putt room with a cathedral ceiling, opened in January of 2007.
βMost programs will build those facilities and itβll lead to winning,β Small said. βOur winning helped lead to the facilities, which is kind of a unique thing, which is cool about it. People be-

lieved in what we were doing. It took a while to finish it off, but we were a good team before that building was even built. We were a top 25 team hitting in the basement of Huff Gym.β
In other words, in a dungeon-like setting in among the boilers and storage rooms and laundry and locker rooms for womenβs volleyball. First-class, it was not.
Now it is. Eight years after the Demirjain building opened, Smallβs team, and that of wom-enβs coach Renee Slone, can step out the east doors and tee it up on a 24-acre outdoor practice center modeled on Augusta Nationalβs Masters range. Both Augusta and the Lauirtsen/Wohlers Outdoor Practice Facility have clearly defined fairways, plus real greens to fire approach shots at. Each also has a superlative short game area.
The big difference between the two: Illinois spent close to $6 million rather than the estimated $40 million Augusta spent between building a new parking lot and placing the Masters range on the old lot. Oh, and Illinoisβ is wedged between the agriculture schoolβs facilities, including an iconic round barn that could be a target for a wild-ly hooked tee shot.
Augusta National is barn-deprived.As was the case for the indoor practice center,
the $6 million for the outdoor facility, which in-cludes an endowment of almost $4 million to pay for continuing maintenance, was all raised pri-vately, though donations from alumni β including Steve and Nicki Stricker and Brent Wadsworth β and other interested parties.
Combined, itβs the crown jewel of practice fa-cilities in the Big Ten. Even Purdue, Ohio State and Michigan, with university-owned golf cours-es on their campuses, have nothing like this.
The quality and scope of the facility should
leave prospective recruits wide-eyed.βThatβs what drew me here,β freshman Nick
Hardy said. βSeeing the outline of that and Coach telling me what it was going to look like, I totally believed in it. I bought in. Itβs a big reason why I came here.
βHaving that as a recruiting tool, itβs huge. Having that as a private facility, for us at any time, for us to hit any shot we want in any wind, itβs going to help us get better. Hopefully, itβll get us more championships in the long run.β
Such as the one Hardy led Illinois to at Vic-toria National in Newburgh, Ind., site of the Big Ten Championship. Hardy finished tied for first with Iowaβs Carson Schaake at 4-under-par 284, Hardyβs effort highlighted by a 4-under 68 in the third round. There was no playoff.
Hardy and fellow freshman Dylan Meyer, an Evansville, Ind., native whose insight into Victo-ria National was invaluable during the conference tourney, are joined on the traveling five by senior
Brian Campbell and juniors Thomas Detry β the latest from the Belgian pipeline Small has culti-vated β and Charlie Danielson. That trio collected various levels of All-America honors last season. This year, Detry was the conferenceβs player of the year and scored the lowest stroke average, Hardy was picked as freshman of the year, and Small was honored as coach of the year for the seventh time.
Detry said the facility, indoors and out, was part of the lure to come across the pond, just as

compatriot Thomas Pieters, the 2013 NCAA individual champ, had done.
βThe most important thing is, the whole thing is for us,β Detry said. βNot just during the season, but dur-ing the off-season, during the summer when thereβs no school. Iβm really, re-ally excited about it. Itβs going to be perfect next fall. Itβs definitely going to help us for sure. Having one of the best facilities in the country, indoor and outdoor, itβs a plus for us.
βWhatβs amazing is itβs right on campus. Itβs 15 minutes away walking from my apartment. Classes are not far away. We can drive or bike or walk over. The location makes it so con-venient. A lot of colleges have good facilities, but having it right there on campus is pretty unique.β
The Illini prepared for their Big Ten triumph not on the new range, but at the Orange and Blue Course prac-tice range at Savoy, likely the last time they would use it. That short-game area, with a pair of greens, was an up-grade from the nothing they had be-fore. Now they have everything.
How much more can that help Small and Slone in their recruiting? Small knows whatβs already been ac-complished in his program.
βThe building helped us get over the edge, to get into the top 15, top 10,β he said. βThe buildingβs been the biggest asset, because we get better in the win-tertime. The outdoor center, what it does is command respect from people seeing
thereβs a commitment to golf, that itβs ours, that we donβt have to worry about anybody else getting in our way.
βThe building got (Scott) Langley and (Luke) Guthrie to come here be-cause they liked the coaching staff and saw some commitment, some passion and some history, some knowledge. Then couple that with the ability to practice and get better and go to a great university, that got βem excited. Now youβve got a place that takes it up a notch higher with the outdoor center.β
Smallβs a fixture on campus, but itβs not like he hasnβt been tempted to go elsewhere. Arizona called and Kansas pushed hard a few years ago. Small, a native of Danville, stayed put.
βItβs who I am,β Small said.He was on Danville Highβs IHSA
title team in 1982, on the Illini title squad in 1988, and now, two years af-ter Illinois was runner-up to Alabama, has a team that could win the NCAA Championship.
βItβs been a year, if we finish it off the way we can finish it off, I know some coaches at Purdue (where Illi-nois romped) were saying, this could be the best Big Ten team of all time,β Small said.
βThatβs if we finish it off. This team has an opportunity to do some special things, but in order to do that, we have to be ourselves. No Big Ten teamβs ever been rated No. 1 before. Theyβre saying that kind of stuff, but weβve got some work to do.β

No holes in the case for aerificationLuke Cella
You see them every spring and fall. The thousands of holes in putting greens, and often elsewhere on a course.
Why?Because aerification is the best thing a golf
course superintendent can do for the turf. With-out getting too technical, aerification does one thing that makes our turf healthy and able to with-stand the abuse it takes each summer by adding a very important component to the soil: air.
It does this by alleviating compaction, the physical pressing of soil particles together. Aerification adds physical space between soil particles and allows air to infuse the soil.
Everybody likes space, even soil particles.Think about the last time your personal space
was infringed upon. You were probably in a mass transit setting or a crowded sporting event. That feeling of being pressed in is not comfortable.
Once you were out of the situation, you felt much better, like you could breathe. Soils donβt have feelings, but space within the soil is impor-tant for turfgrass health and survival. The draw-back to the process is that it disrupts the playing surface and if we could avoid it, we would.
Plants, like humans, need air, water and food to survive. Plants take up these items from the soil through their root systems. If the soil is compacted or pressed together, there is no free air exchange and no place for the roots to grow to pick up water and nutrients.
Think of the root system of the turf plant akin to your nose and mouth. In goes food and water while air is exchanged using your respira-tory system. If food, water, or air is impeded or withheld β your life changes drastically. For-tunately most have unrestricted access to food, water, and air β but turf plants trying to grow in compacted soils are limited because of restricted access to these vital components.
Compaction of a soil builds over time. It is a normal process, especially for golf courses and other turfed areas designed to support human activity. Each time a person steps on the turf or a mower travels over it, the soil compresses a little more. Even downward forces from rainfall and snow add to the compaction of a soil.
Why do some courses seem to aerify more than others?
As each golf course is different so are the
soils underneath them. The rate and ease at which soils compact are a function of the number and the size of the particles that make up a soil.
Soils comprised of smaller particles com-pact more readily than those that are comprised of larger particles. There are three different particle sizes in a soil: sand, silt and clay. Sand particles are by far the largest and when pressed together still provide some space for air, water, roots and nutrients β which is why the USGA specifies the use of sand for green construction.
Clay, the smallest of particles, can get so close to each other when compacted that air and water molecules cannot pass through. Because of this property, clay is often used to line the bottom of man-made lakes.
Every soil has varying amounts of sand silt and clay. If a soil has more clay in it, it will compact quicker than one that is comprised of sand. Clayey soils will need more frequent aeri-fication to open them up for root growth and air exchange. It is a simple concept to understand and one of the best practices a superintendent can use to encourage a healthy turf plant and ultimately a better playing surface that lasts throughout our summer season.

About 800 volunteers are needed for every-thing from marshaling holes to working cash reg-isters in the merchandise tent. Most positions are outside, either on the golf course or the range.
In every category, once youβre in, and your shift is over, you can watch golf without paying the admission charge.
The fee is $75, and a bargain. In exchange for working about 12 hours as a volunteer, you get two snazzy golf shirts, a hat, a rain poncho, food and beverage vouchers for your shifts, and admis-sion for the week. The latter is an $80 value.
Championship director Andrew Lamie said late in April that about half the volunteer positions have been filled. Junior SceneReilly, Freeman take titles
From IG News Servicesβββββ
The junior golf season was jump-started on the first weekend of May, with Joe Reilly scor-ing a victory in an Illinois Junior Golf Associa-tion Spring Sectional tournament at Gleneagles in Lemont on Sat., May 2, and Austin Freeman win-ning by two strokes at the 36-hole White Pines Open in Bensenville.
Freeman scored 1-under-par 71 to total 2-over 146 at White Pines on Sun., May 3 to hold off fast-closing Joseph Addante of Algonquin.
Addanteβs 2-under 70 on the West Course was the round of the tournament, but his opening 78 handcuffed his comeback. Freeman had opened with a 75, and his total held up.
Jonathan Nocek (149) of Bloomingdale was third, Grant Godsen (150) of West Chicago fourth, with Flossmoorβs Jack Mulligan, Edwardsβ Ethan Uken and Wheatonβs Luke Armbrust fifth (151).
At Gleneagles, Reillyβs 7-over-par 79 was good enough for a one-stroke victory over Jakob Muehlschlegel of South Elgin.
Reilly, from Clarendon Hills, speckled his scorecard with three birdies, including one on the par-3 16th of Gleneaglesβ Red Course, to sew up the title. Conversely, Muehlschlegel triple-bo-geyed the 16th.
And so the seemingly never-ending IJGA / Mid-American Junior Golf Tour season began. Remarkably, officials will oversee more than 80
tournaments, with nearly every weekday and Sat-urday on the calendar filled beginning in June, once school is out, until mid-August, when the IHSA season, once preeminent and now more of a wind-down campaign, begins.
There was a time when a player could con-vnice a coach to offer a scholarship with solid play during the prep season. That day has almost completely passed.
The rise of competitive junior golf on the lo-cal, regional and national level β the latter via the American Junior Golf Association, which built a full-scale tour around the traditional titles of-fered by the USGA, WGA, WWGA and various regional groups β means the better juniors have to show their stuff in the summer.
In Illinois, the IJGAβs regular schedule and the MAJGT tournaments it offers give players that chance. Some, for better or worse, even offer points in national rankings.

Sarah Cho picked a fine time to collect her first college championship.
The Northwestern freshman won the Big Ten individual title on April 26, and in doing so, led the Wildcats to a share of the conference title with Ohio State at The Fort in Indianapolis.
Cho, a native of San Diego, added a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to a 72-70 start to total 3-under 213 and win the solo crown by a stroke over Ohio Stateβs Katja Pogacar and Marylandβs Juliet Vongphoumy.
That also led the Wildcats, who totaled 1-un-der 863 β the best four of six scores counting each day β to match Ohio State. Purdue was third, nine strokes back.
Shared or outright, itβs the second Big Ten title in three years for Northwestern and head coach Emily Fletcher, though Ohio State won the automatic NCAA bid on a conference tiebreaker.
The Wildcats made up a six-stroke deficit on the Buckeyes on Sunday, with sophomore Kacie Komotoβs 2-under 70 leading the field on the par 72, 6,221-yard course, and Cho right behind with her 71, a score matched by sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert, who added 17 pars to a lone birdie. with two in a three-way tie for fifth, but Komotoβs final round 70 for the Wildcats, a round built on three front-nine birdies, gave her a total of 221 and helped create the deadlock.
Illinois finished ninth, led by Chayanid Pra-passarangkul, whose final round 71 lifted her to 5-over 221 and a share of 16th with Komoro.
