Introduction
Illinois Landfills: Remaining Capacities as of January 1, 2014
Illinois Landfill Projections of Disposal Capacity is the Illinois Environmental ProtectionAgency's annual report regarding the expected disposal capacity available for municipalwaste at Illinois landfills. Illinois municipal waste landfills are required to report to the IllinoisEPA the quantities of solid waste they receive each year, and to calculate and report theamount of remaining capacity existing on the first day of the following year. The Illinois Solid Waste Management Act requires the Illinois EPA to publish this report andto present the data on a regional basis. For this report, the Illinois EPA utilizes its sevenadministrative regions. During calendar year 2013, 42 landfills reported receiving 45,094,197 gate cubic yards ofwaste and a combined capacity of 947,107,568 gate cubic yards. Dividing waste disposedduring 2013 by remaining capacity reported on January 1, 2014, indicates a statewide landfilllife expectancy of 21 years at current disposal rates. Landfill capacity, however, is subject to adjustments due to changes in waste generationrates, landfill expansions, and new landfills. The Illinois regions range from a low of 11 years of current landfill life in Region 2, to a highof 50 years of landfill life in Region 7. See Table 1.

Region 1 Landfills: Waste Accepted in 2013
Region 1 covers the Counties of Boone, Bureau, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Davies, LaSalle, Lee,Ogle, Putnam, Stephenson, Whiteside, and Winnebago. Seven landfills in Region 1 reported capacity in 2013. Those facilities reported receiving acombined total of 15,187,038 gate cubic yards of municipal waste during 2013, and226,005,015 gate cubic yards of capacity available on January 1, 2014. A total of 15 years ofcapacity remain for Region 1 at current disposal rates.
